Review
"Katie Silcox leads the next generation of thought leaders—helping people live healthier, happier, and more fulfilling lives. The fact that she can deliver what she has to say with so much clarity, humor, caring, and yes, sexiness is a gift, because it means that more and more of us will continue to be drawn to listen and thus, benefit from the ancient wisdom she so expertly conveys." (Rod Stryker, American yoga master and author of The Four Desires)

“Ayurveda originated, in part, to address the disorders and ease the discomfort of a populous grown increasingly distant from the intimate practical knowledge of, and proximity to nature’s cycles, seasons, and wisdom. Katie Silcox empathizes with these city and worldly dwellers, and shares simple, light-hearted, possibly life-changing perspectives and techniques that hail from the time-tested sisters in Indian sciences: Ayurveda and Yoga.” (Dr. Claudia Welch, author of Balance Your Hormones, Balance Your Life)

“Katie Silcox, you are the Carrie Bradshaw of the yoga and Ayurveda movement in the United States.” (Meredith Hogan, voted Cincinnati's Best Yoga Teacher 2011)

"Katie translates the self-help ancient system of Ayurveda for the modern woman who wants to be more healthy, happy, and sexy, and achieve the goals of pleasure, prosperity, purpose, and freedom—living life to the fullest." (Sharon Gannon, founder of Jivamukti Yoga)

"Katie's book feeds her readers, no doubt, but more importantly in many ways, it also nourishes the Ayurvedic tradition itself." (Prashanti de Jager, founder of Organic India and The Pacific Center for Ayurveda and author of Turmeric and The Spice of Life)

"Katie Silcox has written a practical, spicy, and highly readable manual for creating a workable Ayurvedic lifestyle. She makes this ancient traditional approach to health completely accessible—and in the process, inspires us to revolutionize our health by following the principles she outlines. Carefully researched and irradiated by Kate's own years of practice, this is a book to keep by your side for guidance through all the seasons of your life. I highly recommend Healthy Happy Sexy–not least for the insights Katie offers on what it means to practice with the authenticity and radical self-honesty that real health and well being require!" (Sally Kempton, world-renowned spiritual teacher, and author of Awakening Shakti and Meditation for the Love of It)

"Katie Silcox’s voice is strong, clear, nourishing and empowering. Healthy Happy Sexy is a contemporary yogini’s book of ancient secrets and profound knowledge of our body, spirit and soul. Katie masterfully presents the philosophy and practices of Ayurveda with her own wisdom and experience. She shows how we can create our own journey into wellness and embrace our inherent sexual and creative power. Her book is an open–hearted and soulful invitation to align our natural rhythm with Mother Earth so that we too may reap the benefits of a balanced and harmonious life. Katie’s wise and witty guidance inspires us to make empowered choices about wellness so we can live a life of juicy freedom. This beautiful and inspiring book is for any woman who wants to come into alignment with herself and the Divine.” (Laura Amazzone, author of Goddess Durga and Sacred Female Power)

“Katie Silcox’s book, and indeed her life, is filled with refreshingly real, flowingly connected, and valuably accessible moments of Kala-Deshi-Patra, making her work more potentially ‘Authentic Ayurveda’ than the literally outdated Victorian attitudes that have attenuated Ayurveda’s blossoming for many decades now. Katie’s book feeds her readers, no doubt, but more importantly in many ways, it also nourishes the Ayurvedic tradition itself. By giving it a new license, and thus a new life, she sustains the perennial wisdom of this grand ‘Science of Life.’” (Prashanti de Jager, MS, founder of Organic India and The Pacific Center for Ayurveda, author of Turmeric: The Ayurvedic Spice of Life)

“Happy Healthy Sexy is a great introduction to the timeless wisdom of Ayurveda and is brought to life by Katie Silcox, one of a new generation of gifted writers. Intelligently written and witty, readers will be inspired to take greater care of their sacred self and bring the sacred into everyday life.” (Dr. Marc Halpern, president of the California College of Ayurveda and author of Healing Your Life)

“Katie translates the self-help ancient system of Ayurveda for the modern woman who wants to be more healthy, happy, and sexy and achieve the goals of pleasure, prosperity, purpose, and freedom—living life to the fullest.” (Sharon Gannon, founder of Jivamukti Yoga)

“Katie Silcox’s enthusiasm for yoga, Ayurveda, and loving relationships radiates with heart-warmth on every page of Healthy Happy Sexy. This book is packed with loads of information from the deep well of Indic traditional knowledge, all conveyed with her great joy and love of life.” (Stuart Sovatsky, PhD, copresident of the Association for Transpersonal Psychology and author of Advanced Spiritual Intimacy and Your Perfect Lips)

“Katie Silcox is a breath of fresh, feminine air. She has the innate ability to translate ancient teachings into modern language that is tangible, relatable, funny, and by the end of the book you feel as though you have been sharing secrets with your dearest friend. And, Katie is just that. She is a friend for all who seek to know more of their wonderful, juicy, and highest Self. This book is an amazing vehicle for those who are ready to begin a journey towards happiness and health. It is also a must-have reference for teachers and students who are passionate about the possibility of transformation, and of course, bringing sexy back.” (Jessica Durivage-Kerridge, founder of Where Is My Guru, writer, speaker, yoga teacher, and Divine Mama at www.whereismyguru.com)

“I have complete trust in Katie. She is one of those very rare yoga teachers for whom the inner journey is both central and powerful. You get the sense when you are around her that she’s been down this road before, that there’s a deep wisdom about yoga and Ayurveda encoded into her system and she’s waking up to it anew right in front of your eyes. She sparkles when she teaches and her path of ParaYoga shares unique secrets about breathing and posture found in no other tradition. If you are open to being transformed, visit her classes and enjoy the benefit of her soft touch and a wisdom that belies her years.” (Eric Shaw, founder of Prasana Yoga and Yoga Education Through Imagery)

Ayurvedic Soup for the Soul
By Simone C.
Katie Silcox is a yoga instructor, teacher, and mentor, who currently conducts workshops, retreats, and trainings internationally. She has received some impressive accolades, such as in 2009 being named one of San Francisco’s Best Yoga Teachers Under 30 by Common Ground Magazine.

More importantly though, she has herself experienced the stress and pressure associated with achieving “success” in the modern, western world, stress and pressure that led to anxiety and panic attacks and the choice to either start self-medicating to survive or get to the problem’s roots. Through her search to shed cultural expectations and societal programming, and find her source of true fulfillment, she discovered yoga, tantra, and Ayurveda, the transformational power of which she shares in this book.

Happy Healthy Sexy is for the modern, western woman who is lost and trying to be found. I reiterate the latter point. It is for the woman who is actively seeking to be found, the woman who is open to spirituality and who has realized that being judgmental does nothing but sequester us in soul-sucking prisons that have long become self-imposed. I believe you'll need to be at this stage in order to be open to the book's message.

It is at once a friend, empathizing with your feelings of emptiness and inner conflict brought on by a life of trying to be what your family and/or society expects you to be, and a mentor, guiding you through various ayurvedic protocols. I personally had, prior to reading this book, very little knowledge of Ayurveda, save for a teeny bit of knowledge acquired from talking with a German girl who I once shared a room with in Indonesia; she had just spent several weeks in Southern India in an Ayurvedic clinic being treated for what sounded like burnout from a thankless job. But I digress.

Silcox’s tone is smart without being pedantic or patronizing. At the same time she is playful without too much clich or cheesiness. She has structured the content as follows.

Part I: Philosophy
1. Aligning with Big Mama
2. The Four Glorious Goals of Life
3. The Doshas and the Five Elements
4. Your Soulful, Subtle Self

Part II: Healthy
5. Ayurvedic Nutrition and Your Dosha
6. The Secret of Great Digestion
7. Food and the Emotions
8. Setting Up a Living, Sexy Kitchen

Part III: Happy
9. Glowing Goddess Routines
10. Boost Radiance and Show Aging
11. Exercise Like an Ayurveda Queen
12. Why Modern Gals Should Meditate

Part IV: Sexy
13. Ayurveda Sexuality and Deep Female Vitality
14. Tantra and Conscious Sex
15. Cultivating Sexual Energy from Within
16. The Power of Your Womb

Part I is where us noobs become acquainted with Ayurveda, which literally translates to “knowledge of life.”

This ancient Indian tradition describes the different types of bodies and how they should best be cared for. I’ll try to give an idea of what the content entails. It says the soul has 4 goals or desires: 1) kama or luscious daily pleasure; 2) artha or the means of prospering; 3) dharma or purpose; and 4) moksha or freedom. The essential pillars of health are food, sleep, and sex. 5 elements (ether, air, fire, water, and earth) comprise all matter. These elements combine to form doshas.

Doshas are our fundamental character and body types. They are vata, pitta, kapha, or some combination of the three. The book explains all of these concepts and then helps you diagnose your type(s). The premise here is that health, vitality, and longevity are needed in order to truly thrive; and none of this is possible without balancing your doshas. If I could offer a tip, it would be to spend some time with the content of this chapter. Make sure you feel confident that you have diagnosed your dosha type, as the rest of the book will be much more useful if you have this reference point.

Parts II, III, and IV are then devoted to teaching you how to find and maintain balance for each type through proper diet, sleep hygiene, meditation, exercise, and skincare. The subject of sex is even covered. Page after page after page of practical tips are provided. In this way, the book becomes an instruction manual that can be used to implement a change at a time, at a pace with which you are comfortable.

It’s fascinating stuff and certainly worthy of attention for the woman who is truly searching for a sustainable and balanced way to live that is energizing and fulfilling.

There were unfortunately two things that irked me. First, somewhere around halfway or maybe three quarters of the way through, typos and grammatical errors started showing up. It was as if Silcox came up against her deadline and got a little sloppy. I found it distracting; especially in light of the previous content having been so well written. Second, it seems that she imagined her audience to be Caucasian. When writing about sunbathing, the author states “[y]ou may feel tempted to bare it all out of the sheer joy of feeling the sultry sun on your wintry-white skin.” I was willing to let this reference pass. But then she said, again in reference to spending time in warm climates, [w]e just have to take care so we do not end up overheated, fire-engine red, and hungover.” I am not Caucasian and so these references felt a little exclusionary for me. But I’m not a believer of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. So while I wanted to mention these things, I still highly recommend the book.

The bottom line is this is a pretty great introduction to Ayurveda for the woman who is searching for a deeper meaning and who knows there are incongruences in her life and wants to find harmony amongst its various elements. This is the type of stuff that will help to soothe your soul and guide you on your journey.

Happy reading and hope this review was helpful!

If you're wondering, YES you should buy it.

Kate Silcox has amazing advice for all-natural full body, mind and spirit care in a modern world. Also, she is super witty, which allows this self-help book to read less "self-helpy." It feels like a conversation you would have with your best friend, albeit the most significant conversation you might ever have. I have read TONS of spirituality and yoga books, but this is by far my favorite. Read it and then gift it to all of your friends.
