A waste of time for true history lovers

This book written and collected by professors of Slavonic studies Stephanie Schwandner-Sievers tries to ridicule the Albanian identity, one of the oldest ones in Europe. While it is true that today's Albania due to ottoman, slavic, roman, greek invasions is a remote image of what it used to be, it is still remarkable of how hard these authors along with some pseudo-Albanian critics enlisted in the same universities try to make the history of this country look almost "grotesque".

This is of course the result of the fact that in no school currently there is a Department of Albanian studies and most of such studies gets produced by Slavic or Greek departments and thus are extremely biased towards one or the other. The only ones who have managed at times some impartiality are the Italians, but overall the brave ones that ventured into the history of Albania, as Milan Shuflaj(killed by Serbs),George von Hahn, Fallmerayer etc etc are now gone and their huge amt of information and historical documents collected is sitting somewhere waiting to be picked up when a real department of Albanian-Illyrian studies will be established again.

History is of course written by the winners, but for those studying Albania this book is far from a guide to it's rich culture and unfortunately unless someone knows German, Italian or Croatian is extremely hard for the English-speaking world, which currently dominates in the field of education to get a glimpse of the beautiful history of this country. I guess my best bet would be to go and visit the place and it's people instead of reading slavic propaganda from Oxford's, Columbia's, Indiana's and other Slavo-Greek departments of propaganda, that would make the Propaganda Fide look like a first grade student of such school.

An Albania lover's delight

I have always been fascinated with Albania. With lots of other things on my plate nowadays I haven't really had the time to read many books about this little country on the Adriatic. Once part of the Ottoman Empire, Albania declared its independence in 1912 only to find itself immediately beset by Greek, Montenegrin, and Serbian soldiers who all wanted a slice of the country for their own purposes. The total collapse of the Sublime Porte left Albanians scrambling for support from the Western European powers, but a majority Muslim population (a relic of Ottoman occupation) left many European leaders wary of supporting Albanian claims. Otto Von Bismarck sneeringly referred to Albania as a mere "geographic expression," and other powers seemed to implicitly support this view. World War I led to more troubles, more border partitions, and more problems with Balkan neighbors. The interwar period saw Albania experiment with western style government and monarchy under the leadership of Fan Noli and Ahmed Zogu, respectively. The Italians occupied the country in the late 1930s, leading to King Zog's ouster and clandestine warfare between Albania, Italy, and Germany. As the war ended, Enver Hoxha and his communist partisan forces triumphed over other Albanian liberation factions and took over the country. What followed was nearly fifty years of brutal Stalinist style communism. Today, Albania is working hard at restructuring their country.
"Albanian Identities: Myth and History" is a selection of essays about Albania taken from an academic conference held a few years ago. Included is research from well known Albanian scholars Bernd Fischer, Noel Malcolm, and Stephanie Schwandner-Sievers along with contributions from a range of other researchers looking at Albanian myth through the eyes of the historian, sociologist, and anthropologist. As Schwandner-Sievers writes in her introductory essay to the collection, a central goal of this book is to "trace the context of their (myths) production and transformations, and to show how local and individual variations stand in contrast to the homogenous national claims of Albanian myths." Yes, if you cannot tell from the above quotation, the articles in this book are quite scholarly. It isn't as bad as it sounds, as the vast majority of the contributions to this effort are highly readable. You should have a background in Albanian history, however, because the writers assume you know about Enver Hoxha, Naim Frasheri, the Megali Idea, Bektashism, and the League of Prizren among many other people and places. In fact, if you don't understand the implications of using the term "Kosovo" versus "Kosova," you probably shouldn't read this book until you have a few survey texts under your belt.
My favorite essays in the book include Bernd Fischer's "Perceptions and Reality in Twentieth Century Albanian Military Prowess," M.J. Alex Standish's "Enver Hoxha's Role in the Development of Socialist Albanian Myths," Mariella Pandolfi's "Myths and New Forms of Governance in Albania," and "Youth NGOs in Albania: Civil Society Development, Local Cultural Constructions of Democracy, and Strategies of Survival at Work" by Nicola Mai. Another excellent article written by Roderick Bailey, "Smoke Without Fire? Albania, SOE, and the Communist 'Conspiracy Theory,'" attempts to explode the myths surrounding the role that British operatives played in Hoxha's rise to power after WWII. Mariella Pandolfi's research showing how western humanitarian organizations subvert Albanian political, economic, and social institutions through a type of "supra colonialism" not only resonates deeply with anyone who has even a cursory knowledge of Western European/Albanian relations, but should provide a dozen or so doctoral candidates with enough potential research topics to last the length of their scholarly careers. M.J. Alex Standish compares Enver Hoxha's self-promoting propagandistic emanations with descriptions of Jesus Christ in the New Testament, and finds more similarities than differences. It is unfortunate I cannot summarize every article in this outstanding book, but hopefully the few I touched on will give you an idea of the types of topics covered in "Albanian Identities: Myth and History."
These are the cream of the crop, but every article is articulate, informative, and massively interesting. Other essays address themes of myth in the writings of Ismail Kadare, conspiracy theories in Albanian newspapers, the myths of religion in the formation of an Albanian national identity, and even how Albanian-Americans incorporated their homeland myths into their new lives in the United States. Nearly every article in this book was the equivalent of waking up early on Christmas morning to see what Santa left under the tree. The book takes great pains to emphasize that these articles are not attacking Albanian culture or attempting to denigrate the beliefs of various peoples. Instead, these scholars want to discover how myth manipulation can encourage violence, economically exploit people, and promote ultra nationalistic-expansionist ideas. In this respect, one hopes that a similar tome exploring Serbian and Greek myths is in the works since those two powers have caused much distress to the Albanians over the years. After all, by adopting the definitions about myth in this book we can see that Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic used the myths surrounding the Battle of Kosovo Polje in 1389 to launch an ethnic war against the Kosovar majority there in the 1990s.
"Albanian Identities: Myth and History" is an excellent addition to any Albania fan's library. About the only problem I had with the book as a whole is that the definition of myth is too narrow. Yes, myths do the things written about here, but they also fulfill a whole host of other important functions in people's lives. For example, many myths act as archetypes of virtuous behaviors such as bravery, honesty, charity, and the like. Is it possible to separate the various elements of myth? Can we look at only one, two, or three facets of myth while relegating the other parts into the background? Relevant questions, I think.

What a bunch of crap!

This is a bunch of crap. Most of the contributors to this volume are self declared historians who confuse the articles that they write on Albanian dailies as history. I am quite disappointed with the two editors who are supposedly academicians and publish such material which can be called anything but research.

definitive work on supply-side economics

"The Way the World Works" is the masterpiece of Ronald Reagan's adviser Jude Wanniski. It was listed as one of the 100 most influential books of the 20th Century by the National Review. I don't think that this is the definitive book about the greatness of free markets and failure of protectionism, but anyway it is an interesting work that makes many good points and all people with serious interest in economics should read it. Perhaps it is the definitive book of supply-side economics.

Early on, the author discusses Arthur Laffer's "wedge model" and the "Laffer Curve." Then comes a discussion of Adam Smith's ideas and "demand-side" versus "supply-side" models.

Next follows a commentary on Marxist ideas, Keynesian ideas, and monetarist ideas. The author criticizes all of these.

The author comments on many national leaders: Caesar, Napoleon, Wilson, Coolidge (with Mellon), Hoover, Roosevelt, Mussolini, Hitler, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Nixon. From all of these, it is clear that the author's favorites were Coolidge and Mellon.

The central controversial idea of the book, aside from support for supply-side economics, is the accusation that the stock market Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression were the result of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act. Of course this goes against the "conventional wisdom" in the United States that free markets caused the Crash. The author reviews the bizarre issues surrounding the Act: it was passed while Hoover was president, FDR was elected in 1932 after campaigning against the Act, and then FDR rather than ending this bad policy decided to restrict commerce further.

The author continues with many more topics: the United Kingdom, Bretton Woods, gold, India, Venezuela, Brazil, Mexico, Vietnam, Puerto Rico, energy, and recommendations for the 21st Century.

This "20th Anniversary Edition" not only includes an introduction, but also contains reprints of the introductions from earlier editions.

My central criticism of Wanniski's work is that his faith in the judgement of the electorate is wrong given that voters often (if not usually) vote against their own self-interest. The author contradicts himself by praising democracy and simultaneously criticizing most of the elected presidents especially including FDR (he was elected four times).

Heavily researched

The fact that Wanniski is not an economist actually turned out to be a good thing. If an economist had written it, all you would have is a parroting of the economic model that he was indoctrinated with. Winniski examines all models and his knowlege of world history is something no economist could have brought to the table. No one could have written a comprehensive book without an exceptional knowlege of economics, history and most of all, human nature. Today's "economists" are nothing but paper shuffling, shell-game practitioners, moving money around with no concept of the total implications of what they are doing. Those who do not learn the mistakes of history are doomed to repeat them. Sound familiar?

Chuck's interest in the Kennedys began when his father worked for Bobby Kennedy in the Justice Department in the early 1960's, and he was able to attend both JFK's inauguration and his funeral. He currently lives in an undisclosed location outside of Ann Arbor, Michigan with his wife and dog.

A Must Read

Chuck Helppie's "Kennedy Must Be Killed" is an intriguing and interesting book. It guides the reader through a fascinating era in American history. I got a very different perspective on JFK as I read about his personal life and how he handled crucial national and international incidents. I was particularly struck by the image Helppie portrayed about Kennedy's ideas on civil rights and his inept handling of Kruschev and Castro.
The main character, Patrick, was an idealistic patriot and I came to emphathize with his frustrations and need to take action to ensure America's future. I was drawn into his world as he met some of the most important political leaders of the 1950s and 1960s. I loved how Helppie interwove Patrick's personal and professional relationships with the Kennedys throughout the book. And, of course, I was fascinated by the interesting encounters with people like Sam Giancana, Frank Sinatra, and Marilyn Monroe.
This book kept me interested from beginning to end and I was constantly amazed and surprised by the inter-workings of our government and how the assassination of JFK could have been master-minded by a group of powerful leaders. Chuck Helppie's depth of knowledge is astounding. I found myself reliving many historical events of the 50s and 60s and questioning what I thought was reality and what was fiction.
Even for those who are skeptical about a conspiracy theory in Kennedy's death, this story has deep credibilty and is an exciting read.

A Plausible Challenge to Long-Held Assumptions

I am not a conspiracy-theorist and have long-believed that Oswald probably acted alone, which makes me an unlikely candidate to enjoy this book as much as I did. But author Chuck Helppie weaves real events and plausible speculation together in such a way as to make me wonder, "Hmmm, is it possible that I've been wrong all this time?".

One aspect of the book I found fascinating was the way it forced me, and will no doubt force other readers, to reconsider long-held beliefs. I was in first grade when JFK was killed and remember coming home from a Cub Scout outing - we visited a WWII submarine in the Cleveland harbor - and finding my staunchly-Republican grandmother weeping as she ironed a sheet. I grew up with and have maintained a view of JFK as a shining beacon of all that is right about the promise of America. Suffice to say that JFK does not come off as a shining beacon of anything other than timidity and debauchery in this book. The readers' views of significant historical figures such as Senator Joseph McCarthy and J. Edgar Hoover may also be challenged by Chuck Helppie's work.

Finally, I note the book is published by iUniverse. This is Helppie's first novel and it should be encouraging to any writer, in this era when there are ever-fewer opportunities in traditional publishing, to see the absolutely first-class package which can be achieved through companies like iUniverse. Technology has obviated the need for the shoddy products of the old vanity press, and Helppie's novel demonstrates that where there's a will to tell a great story there is also a way.

Well worth the read.

After reading this book, I am left with believing one of two things:

1)The author was hip-deep in research and did his homework and put together a story that, while fiction, is enjoyable to read.

or

2)The author was a shooter on the grassy knoll and really did shoot JFK....and the only way to tell the story is as fiction. This spin may make you think I'm crazy, but folks have been telling stories of classified operations for years...because they market them as fiction.

The shooting and blood left outside the TSBD was reported in at least one newspaper or newscast during the aftermath of the assassination...that stuck out to me.

Use of Mauser rifles to carry out the shooting, due to the Italian Carcano POS being crap.

The shooting of JD Tippitt by two men, as reported by many witnesses...shell casings left behind...from Oswalds revolver? NOT.

I must admit that this story certainly raised an eyebrow in regards to JFK and his philandering ways. If this were a true portrayal of JFK, RFK and father Joe Kennedy, it is easy to see why JFK would be in the crosshairs.

Great read for TQM principles

I am completing my Masters degree and this was a required book for my Total Quality Management course. This is one of the few books that I have actually enjoyed reading and decided to keep so I can reference it in the future. It provides a solid over view of a number of quality management principles and theories. It was straight forward and easy to read unlike some others where authors over complicate things in an attempt to justify spending absurd amount of money on their textbooks.

About the Author
R.J. Godlewski (GOD LESS KEY) is an independent counterterrorism consultant, the director of the private International Nuclear Emergency Response Team [INERT], and the author of several novels, commentaries, and professional articles. He is the author and architect of the Web-based Independent Counterterrorist training program. He is currently a graduate student at American Military University completing his M.A. in Military Studies, Asymmetrical Warfare concentration, and graduate certificate in Security Management. Mr. Godlewski holds a B.A. in Intelligence Studies, Terrorism Studies concentration with a minor degree in Area Studies – Middle East with honors from American Military University. He further holds an undergraduate certificate in Explosive Ordnance Disposal and is a veteran of both the United States Navy and Navy Reserve. Not worth the money

I gave this book two stars, because I turned the final page with only slightly more knowledge about the subject of professional killers or assassins than what I started with. The information Mr. Godlewski provides readers could be deduced by most discerning, analytical minds. In the end, it's likely not worth the money to purchase and ship this book to your door.

Mr. Godlewski states up front that this is not a "How to" book on becoming an assassin but is best read by military and law enforcement personnel with a mind to understand their quarry, professional killers. While this is a noble goal, the author paints only the broadest of strokes over the subject and fails to provide the necessary tools, knowledge, or even investigative tips or ideas in pursuing such a person, nor does he provide any case-studies that may shed light on pursuit. His conclusion fails to tie together or even expand upon earlier information. Instead he tends to move off on tangents about society at large from abortions to video games and television.

So what might one learn from reading Skills of the Assassin? In simplistic terms, assassins need to disguise themselves amongst the population at large; must have a cover that affords travel; must be even better at laundering money; must be meticulous planners; must be extremely security-aware; and a few interesting excerpts from the Al-Qaeda manual. Nothing Earth-shattering.

The author could have expounded upon some of his graphics on human development or money laundering that would have made for interesting insights into the mind of an assassin. Analogous Counter Terrorism investigations that follow money trails could have been used to point investigators or other professionals to this rich investigative area. Finally, more detailed discussion of tradecraft would have been immensely helpful to the professional without turning this into a "how to" guide.

Of less importance, I did not care for the informal tone of the author's writing or the very large font and spacing used throughout the book. The generally unscholarly tone of the book was a distraction to me and hurt the credibility of the author. While the author does cite several well-respected experts in their field, he cited himself at least 12 times (I would guess that makes for at least over 30% of his citations). He fails to adequately explain some of the included charts and graphics within his text. The artwork adorning the back of the book, a geared up agent or soldier with night vision goggles and what looks like a Sig Sauer handgun, runs completely contrary to the author's point within the book about special ops soldiers not falling into the category of assassins. The artwork, more significantly, detracts from the seriousness of the book.

This "book" would have been better received as a pamphlet, serving as a primer or introductory reading to a more in-depth class or seminar, and should have been priced accordingly. Bottom line, not a recommended read.

An entertaining, fun read, but don't take it too seriously - lots of fiction mixed in

I wasn't quite sure what to make of this one. I think it needs to be taken with a grain of salt. It seemed to me less a professional or academically-sound read than more akin to something that used to be a popular genre of literature with readers of Soldier of Fortune magazine back in the 70s and 80s. It doesn't seem particularly well researched, serious, nor does it actually address what defines an assassin. One reviewer referenced the "Hitman" book that cause a bit of a controversy several decades ago. The term "assassin" is a sexy one, to be sure, but this book is not really a soundly reasoned discussion on that - it is more of a general approach to the old "hitman" idea, updated for this more modern era. I didn't feel it added really much to anything, other than something a survivalist might have on his bookshelf alongside "Five Finger Death Strikes" and other such tomes. There is a growing body of academic and professional literature on two concepts that this book could have focused on, but failed to do so. The first are the hired hitmen used by Russian mafias, Mexican cartels, etc (these are not assassins, just hired thugs). The second are true "assassins" - the people who are either hired or otherwise motivated to conduct the killings of political figures - this second category being the only valid academic/professional application of this term. This book, unfortunately, does not really expand the knowledge base of either concept, but rather focuses on the general 70s-80s "hitman" idea, and cannot really be taken too seriously. I suppose of you are just looking for a fun kind of read to kill some time (pardon the pun) and if you think this activity is "fun" reading, then I guess it might be worth looking into. But, it should not be viewed (having unfortunately purchased this myself as a former IC intel analyst and current think tank researcher focusing on Active Shooters) as really anything more than something one could cobble together based on reading the news and mixed with a bit of imagination. I gave it two stars, instead of one, as it does (as mentioned) make for a decent read as far as mind-candy if you are going on vacation or have a long plane flight ahead, etc. Like a romance novel for women, it's a decent "beach read" that might prove mildly entertaining. I think, in all honesty, the author should consider writing a novel based on this subject, rather than approaching this as non-fiction.

An Overview

The book is written to show the premis that you have to think like your enemy if you want to beat him. Its not a bad read but the subject matter has been covered in other texts and while entertaining and sometimes informative, its not the last word on the topic. I'm kind of surprised to see it after the uproar from the book "Hitman" some years ago. If you have a few bucks and want to add it to your library its not too bad.

EXCELLENT !

If you have some interest in astronomy, and would like to learn more without enduring an overly technical manual, this might work for you. Dr Gribbin is a British astrophysicist (University of Cambridge) who communicates easily. The book can be opened to any page and enjoyed; the kiddos liked it so much, they've read it twice.

I bought this for my husband who is interested in astronomy and has a small telescope. He said that this book was just okay, nothing special. He commented that there were too many historical references. He was looking for a basic guide to stargazing.

The authors, an architect and a chemist, want to eliminate the concept of waste altogether, while preserving commerce and allowing for human nature. Environmentalists are normally the last people to be called shortsighted, yet that's essentially what architect McDonough and chemist Braungart contend in this clarion call for a new kind of ecological consciousness. The authors are partners in an industrial design firm that devises environmentally sound buildings, equipment and products. They argue that conventional, expensive eco-efficiency measures things like recycling or emissions reduction are inadequate for protecting the long-term health of the planet. Our industrial products are simply not designed with environmental safety in mind; there's no way to reclaim the natural resources they use or fully prevent ecosystem damage, and mitigating the damage is at best a stop-gap measure. What the authors propose in this clear, accessible manifesto is a new approach they've dubbed "eco-effectiveness": designing from the ground up for both eco-safety and cost efficiency. They cite examples from their own work, like rooftops covered with soil and plants that serve as natural insulation; nontoxic dyes and fabrics; their current overhaul of Ford's legendary River Rouge factory; and the book itself, which will be printed on a synthetic "paper" that doesn't use trees. Because profitability is a requirement of the designs, the thinking goes, they appeal to business owners and obviate the need for regulatory apparatus. These shimmery visions can sound too good to be true, and the book is sometimes frustratingly short on specifics, particularly when it comes to questions of public policy and the political interests that might oppose widespread implementation of these designs. Still, the authors' original concepts are an inspiring reminder that humans are capable of much more elegant environmental solutions than the ones we've settled for in the last half-century.

A New Way of Seeing and Making.

A new trend is beginning to emerge and its presence increasingly felt in our everyday lives. Let me offer an example: As you take a stroll through your neighborhood you are likely to see not just one container, but two lining the curbs of the street. To many, their existence resembles progress and an increased responsibility in the way we interact with our environment. In fact, to own and use a recycling bin (yes, you likely already guessed it) in some ways has progressed to an object of pride or a display of consumer responsibility. However, it’s early and you take little notice of them as they have become quite commonplace in your neighborhood. You continue your walk and pass a couple wearing matching slip-on shoes, which you recognize from an advertisement as being made of recycled rubber and various other recycled materials. In addition, they are each carrying a cotton grocery bag which they intentionally bring and reuse every time they make such a trip to the store. You head back down your street (feeling slightly guilty after the couple passed you and wondering if you shouldn’t also be using such a bag) and arrive back at your residence. You reach down and pick up the newspaper (made of recycled paper) just as your neighbor pulls into their driveway, windows down and music playing. You recognize the soothing voice of Jack Johnson and strain your ears to listen more closely:

If you're going to the market to buy some juice. You've got to bring your own bags and you learn to reduce your waste...And if your brother or your sister's got some cool clothes...You could try them on before you buy some more of those...Reuse, we've got to learn to reuse… And if the first two R's don't work out..and if you've got to make some trash...Don't throw it out...Recycle, we've got to learn to recycle…

I think I’ve made my point. The message is everywhere. And as Johnson’s song laid out for us above, the message is clear: Reduce, reuse, recycle. However, as widespread and as this message is becoming one must stop and ask: is it effective? William McDonough and Michael Braungart argue in Cradle to Cradle: Remaking The Way We Make Things that such a design goal is ineffective. Efficient? Yes. Effective? Not quite. They propose that such efforts, which they categorize as “eco-efficient” design, are only a “less bad” version of a poor design methodology that emerged from the industrial revolution. These efforts do not change the way products are designed, rather they seek to mitigate the effects of poor design. As result, they seek a negative goal of zero impact on the environment. The problems associated with this approach are numerous. First, it creates a dichotomy between the environment and industry, with gains to one necessitating a loss to the other (also known as zero sum, see the trend). This leads to conflict and opposing agendas between the two and does very little to reveal how the two may actually be of benefit to one another. Second, as mentioned, it only makes a bad thing, less bad. To reduce something bad or harmful does not negate its impact, but only delays it. As such, these efforts are by definition unsustainable. Third, at best it has a goal of seeking not to degrade the environment and certainly does not consider the possibility that good design may actually improve the environment. So what is the main problem with the design form that emerged from the industrial revolution? Put simply, it was designed to become waste. Or put another way, it was designed with waste in mind. The authors label such design, cradle-to-grave design, as it is purposed from inception to become waste. They suggest that to solve this design dilemma we must rethink our idea of waste, or rather not think of it as a possibility at all. If design is reborn without waste in mind then we will have new products and new systems that bring life and wasteful abundance to its surroundings. If we sow design with new life in mind, our industries and our environment will reap the benefits of this change in design methodology. The author’s point out that nature’s idea of waste or excess actually enriches its surroundings. What if we design products from inception that sought to do the same? What if we learned from nature’s example and designed our systems cradle-to-cradle?

I highly recommend this inspiring work. From the very surface it is printed on (not paper!) to the bold vision it conveys, McDonough and Braggart have gifted the world with this call to action. This should be required reading for every Industrial Designer, Interior Designer/Decorator, Architect, Engineer, et al. I will definitely be reading their next, "Upcycle". This book is now part of my permanent library, to always remind me when designing, "waste equals food." Highly recommend!

About the Author
The BDK English Tripitaka Series was started by the late Dr. Rev. Yehan Numata, founder of the Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai (BDK) [Society for Buddhist Understanding]. The goal of this series is to make available in the English language the Buddhist scriptures and commentaries of the Sino-Japanese edition of the "Taisho Tripitaka." Scholars and specialists from throughout the world have been enlisted to translate the selected texts into English. When completed, the one-hundred eight volumes will comprise the First Series of the BDK English Tripitaka.
