Christian Ministry - Ouside the Box

Richard Mull candidly relates the story of how God broke into his very natural existence in a supernatural way. "The Jesus Training Manual" is made up of two parts: Mull's personal encounter with God and the Biblical foundations for experiencing the God of the Bible, hearing His voice, walking in His authority and power, and finding His will for your life.

Mull advocates that God still works in the realm of the miraculous, that demons are real and we can know how to deal with them. He gives Biblical principles and truths about the Kingdom of God, healing, spiritual battles, and our spiritual armor for fighting those battles.

I found the study questions at the end of each chapter practical, probing, and heart searching, personally opening up the possibility of considering new perspectives on the meaning of discipleship and experiencing Christ's fullness in my walk with Him. These exercises become a vital core to the training manual especially when opportunities are available to discuss in a group or classroom situation along with the supporting material provided in the book's narrative.

Mull's unique story is one of allowing his character to be shaped and reshaped as the result his perseverance in praying to become a transformer of lives through a ministry to individuals tormented by fear, anxiety, depression, and negative thinking.

Richard is convinced that when we limit God we are also limiting the extent of our experience with Him. He recaps the price of radically pursuing God. Living a Life of Miracles, Signs and Wonders

This author (although unknown before to me) has captured in a beautiful and loving manner, in his writings, one of the best books to serve as a training manual for each Christian to learn, grow and serve in the miracles, signs and wonders of our Lord.
Have you thought about it? How many sermons, Bible studies, small group meetings have addressed the over 30 miracles recorded in the gospels for each of us to learn how to apply what Jesus was and is teaching us in His miracles? Probably not too many!
The author discusses in 9 chapters his person encounter with God, and then in 7 more chapters he provides for us the biblical foundations to help us learn what our life today should be as we follow Jesus.
This is a great book and one to be used as a guide with the Bible for teachings as we all learn to operate in the miracles, signs and wonders of our Lord. Read and grow in the life of our Lord His son Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Being Discipled by Jesus

Richard Mull reminds me of the Apostle Paul. Richard, the author was educated in seminary had a position as a youth pastor. Everything was going great until God no longer fit the box of Richard's theology. Richard knew how to make programs, sermons, and counsel people. He did not understand what it meant or how to disciple people. He also did not believe that God healed today or did signs and miracles. Similarly to Paul, Richard had his experience with God. This was done through another man who was sent by God to destroy his theological box. Richard then spent time re-examining the Scriptures for himself to see what they revealed. It changed the way he understood Scripture. The first part of the book is Richard's journey from god shattering his theological box to his current understanding of God. The second half of the book is how this new understanding has healed and set people free. Richard does not just want to make Christians, but disciples of Jesus who can do the same things that Jesus and His disciples did. Jesus was able to train the 12 and the 72 to do the same things He did. Would you like to walk in the same power as Jesus did? Do you want to be discipled by Jesus? Open your hearts and minds to what Richard has to offer. Check the Scriptures to see if what he says is true as you read the book. you could be a disciple of Jesus and do the same things that He has done in greater measure. Are you willing to open yourself?

Some beautiful examples of the genre, but it is by no means an exhaustive survey.

As with most of Dover's book this is a great source book for Art Nouveau designs. The selections are drawn from Art Nouveau periodicals, posters, textile and wallpaper designs, bookplates, jewellery and stained glass. Many of the designs are taken from previously published Dover source books, so it acts as a best of/basic introduction.

However Art Nouveau officiando's take note. It only covers examples from France, Germany, Austria, Czechoslavakia (exclusively Mucha), England, Switzerland and the US, with the first 3 countries offering the largest examples. It has a biographical index to the artists, but this contains very cursory biographical detail. I would also question the assertion that it contains "images by virtually every key artist of the Art Nouveau movement". There are no examples by Klimt, Mackintosh. Tiffany, Lalique or Gaudi so there are major ommissions.

As a source book, it offers some beautiful examples of the genre, but it is by no means an exhaustive survey.

More Primer then Essential but still worthy.

I was prepared to be disappointed with this book from the outset, thinking that much like many recent titles in the last few years it would be a rehash once again of the same old French Nouveau Ad Posters, and Mucha's common works like "Princezna Hyacinta", "Seasons'', or ''Medee'' Theater Ad.

However I was more then pleasantly surprised. The book itself is broken up into various European regions responsible for the many flavors of art nouveau the we know today.And within each division are many lesser known works and stand alone motifs that made this very savory reading for me personal. As a designer it is a joy to see the major elements broken down into their essential parts, offering a pretty good insight into how they made up the bigger picture and influenced everything from jewelry, architecture and fashion cementing it as byword for elegance.

I cant recommend this book enough for people wanting to get a good base understanding of the art form, but I would hesitate to call it an essential reference. As its been mentioned before its more a primer then a deep delving of the many stunning works out and abroad. But that in and of itself does not detract from the many eye catching forms contained within.
Definitely a good suggesting for those of the Art or Textile persuasions..

For those who know me, Art Nouveau is my period. I am particularly well read in it, and have had several hundred desktop pieces glorifying my abodes. Dover has published countless little books on and with elements of Art Nouveau design, from cloth to wallpaper to glass and everything in between. They have been enormously useful to artists and designers looking for inspiration or outright theft, and anything to leverage the most pleasant ambience provided by Art Nouveau is welcome.

This new offering from Dover is a little different, because it takes graphic designs from other Dover books on Art Nouveau. It’s sort of a meta collection. The book is sectioned by country, so you can see how (very) different each one’s Art Nouveau was. Typically, some major artist set the tone and style, and derivations bloomed. Mackintosh in Scotland, Beardsley in England, Moser in Austria, Hoffmann in Germany, …. The whole period lasted from the mid 1890s to the early 1920s, and was subsumed by Art Deco, whose seeds are clearly evident, particularly in Austrian and German Art Nouveau (Jugendstil).

Typography is very wrong

Judging by the sample, the book itself seems to be quite good. Unfortunately all code samples are embedded as pictures and reading it on a Paperwhite is quiet hard - embedded pictures are way to small and you have to zoom every one of them to see anything and ten with small examples you get the image rotated and pixelated. For me that is a factor that disqualifies the book as a valid Kindle material.

Good walkthrough of OOPHP.

I think the book was a very good read, for people like me who have had issues breaking ground on Object Oriented PHP. You do need to have a decent understanding of the language, and programming, but I suppose that is what the book aims for.
So if you have found it hard to learn OOPHP, then this will help, a lot. The structure of the book is good, the reason for 4, and not 5 stars is that I found some of the code examples a bit vague and inconsistent. A bit more work there would have been good I think.

Good OOP and MVC Coverage

The book is pretty straight foward and the material is easy to understand. I was especially happy with the explanation of the oop concepts. I also thought the mvc example app was really cool and gave me a really good understanding of how all the oop concepts come together as well as how to build an mvc app from ground up. The down load link for the restaurant app is at the end of ch. 8, I would expect it to have been in a more intuitive place to find but no biggy. All in all I really like this book and am glad I found it.

Could have been better

What attracts me to this book is that it has "A Tools Approach" in the title. It does have a pretty comprehensive coverage on tools currently available for model based testing. There are a dozen examples and case studies in the book to illustrate different approaches/tools for building good models specific to the SUT.

Another thing I like about the book is the literature listed at the end of each chapter for further reading.

One thing on my wish list for the book is a guide to building model based test frameworks (for housing the models) due to the fact that lots of times testers need to build such a customized framework before building models (again, due to lack of mature commercialized model based testing frameworks).

OK, OK, updated it now that the ModelJUnit is available, it will be potentially useful for people developing in Java.

good philosophical discussion of nationality

This book contains a good discussion of nationality and its consequences for our daily lives. Miller discusses different philosophical positions on nationality, namely ethical universalism vs. ethical particularism and conservative nationalism vs. liberal nationalism. He believes that nationality can serve many constructive purposes, including keeping us together as an (imagined) community plus giving a basis for trust within a state. Miller recognizes the problems inherent in nationality - for instance the never-ending problems of supporting national self-determination as a doctrine - although he claims that nationality and nationalism are not equivalent. He argues that we should make nationality as non-ethnic as possible to include all members of the nation.
Miller does falter when it comes to the ethics of nationality in international relations, claiming that we should sponsor a 'friendly rivalry' between nations and help other nations help themselves without realizing how such a position can lead towards violating his belief in the inherent right for all nations to exist. At the end of the book he also supports the right of a state to offer protection to its national culture to prevent the McDonaldization of the world's cultures, something that can end up being quite illiberal in response to something many authors (like Anthony Smith) believe has been blown out of proportion. Nonetheless this book is quite generally quite convicing and is thus valuable reading for students of political theory and nationalism alike.

About the Author
Robert L. Bob BugBob Allen is an entomologist, botanist, instructor and photographer. Raised in San Juan Capistrano, he studied insects from a very early age. He and Fred attended Marco Forster Junior High School in San Juan Capistrano but never met until they entered Dana Hills High School where borth learned native plants in natural history class. He attended Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, then California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. In 1982, Cal Poly awarded him a bachelor of Science degree in Environmental and Systematic Biology. In 2006, he received his Master of Science degree in Environmental Studies from California State University, Fullerton. At CSUF, he taught entomology and biological illustration. He teaches nature photography, entomology, botany and pollination classes in classroom and in the field. Bob is a Research Associate at the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden and a Research Associate in Entomology at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. He is now working on a book about California s pollinating insects.

Fred M. Roberts, Jr. is a consulting botanist, artist, and author. He grew up in Dana Point, where thousands of acres of underdeveloped grasslands and hiking opportunities contributed to a strong interest in natural history. While attending Dana Hills High School he became interested in reptiles, amphibians, birds, and plants. At Saddleback College, botany became his primary interest and he put together his first checklist of Orange County plants, which he later published and is now in its third edition. In 1982, he received his Bachelor of Science in Geography with an emphasis on Botany from the University of California, San Barbara. From 1982 to 1991 he worked as an assistant curator in the Museum of Systematic Biology, University of California, Irvine. From 1991 to 1999 he worked as a botanist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service before starting his own botanical consulting business. Fred is a Research Associate at the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden. He is currently working on several projects including A Flora of Orange County, California.

Great resource for So Cal residents

I bought two copies of this, one for myself and one for my father who is a trained botanist. It has hundreds of beautiful full color illustrations and is very informative and easy to read. It compares well to any "Peterson's Guides" if you are familiar with those.

A Beautiful book for those of us who love real books

Despite the convenience of digital books and field guides, you will love this book. It is chock full of scholarly information and beautiful pictures but very user friendly. This is useful for a PhD or a weekend hiker who loves the outdoors.
It does have a limited geography being specific to the Santa Ana Mountains of Orange County California but the information is still applicable to Los Angeles County, Riverside County, San Bernardino County and San Diego County.
It appears to be pricy but that was driven by the desire to make it a complete book with many excellent photos taken by Bob Allen and illustrations by co Author Fred Roberts Jr.
It is so much more than just a wildflower book because you get an education as your read about the plants. They include what they call "guilds" of organisms that are associated with the plant.
You will not be sorry if you buy this book

So-so writing, but an interesting project

Julie and Julia is not the book version of the blog Julie Powell kept as she cooked her way (in a year) through Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Powell's book doesn't even address the blog so much; it's more "behind the scenes." Despite this, though, it reads much like a casual blog does. Powell wanders down tangents, eventually returning to the premise of the memoir, and readers will get to know a lot about her friends, their relationships, and her workplace.

If you're looking for a fun story to read (never mind all the profanity,) Julie and Julia fits the bill. I wouldn't necessarily point to it as an example of fine writing, however. The unbelievable challenge she has undertaken proves to be enough of a driving force to compensate for the basics of story, plot, and character development. And a memoir really takes on those literary devices in a different manner anyhow.

Powell spends quite a few pages describing various recipes, and on about 18 pages of this book that crests 300 pages she recreates what she imagines to be exchanges between Julia Child and Child's husband, Paul. These pages are almost out of place and detract from Powell's own story, and knowing off the bat (as she tells us) that she's used creative license to write these passages almost makes them unnecessary. The rest of the book, however, is enjoyable enough.

Unfortunately it seems as though Powell hasn't been able to capitalize on the enormous gift she received. She wrote a second book called Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat, and Obsession, which released in 2010. This second memoir details Powell's internship in an NYC butcher shop and also the infidelity in which she engaged, almost to the detriment of her marriage.

I don't agree with Powell's choice of story nor of life, and it seems that many readers feel the same. Moreover, several reviews of the book call out the increasingly average prose of this second memoir, proving, I think, that Powell really isn't a writer of great talent. She just happened to chronicle a unique event the first time around and received her 30 minutes of fame because of it.

As a writer who wishes for the kind of gift-wrapped opportunity Powell received, I feel sorry that she squandered it so easily. And I also feel curiously encouraged. If Julie Powell, sitting in her ratty Long Island City apartment and blogging about cooking her way through one of the most famous cookbooks of all time, can become a published author--maybe, just maybe, I have a shot too.

I would recommend Julie and Julia the book for someone who doesn't mind a casual, meandering record of a year in someone's life and their pursuits. But for the essence of the book and a terrific film, definitely check out "Julie and Julia" on DVD instead.

Too bitter for me to swallow

I enjoyed the movie, which is what moved me to pick up the book. Honestly, I could have just stuck with the movie. It's not that the book is bad, it just left me with no emotional takeaway. Julie Powell uses Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and Julia Child, to find meaning in her life. Except that we never see how that's accomplished, if it is in any way, as apparently blogging about such a feat is what REALLY brought meaning to her life (in terms of a job opportunity). What we do see is an often hysterical, quite self-depricating, funny but occasionally too bitter for my tastes 29 year old panicking about getting old and having a crap job. And also about cooking. I enjoyed most her explanations about how each recipe was done (as I don't speak French, hearing a firsthand account about stripping marrow from bones, for example was both funny and educational). What I liked least was the fact that she apparently throws tantrums a lot, and in the book she makes no excuses for it (which is fine) but it happens so often that is just seems....pointless. And distracting. I appreciate that she portrayed her marriage as very even-keel and balanced, and she apparently became a tinge less judgmental (of friends, anyway- members of an opposing political party are fair game) by the end of her year-long journey. Also, maybe this bitter cynicism and holier-than-thou crap is a New Yorker thing? In which case, that was educational as well.

In my honest opinion, if you are looking for a "year in the life" book, fascinated by the early days of blogging, or need some support that you are not alone in being frustrated by French cooking, this is a good book to pick up. Otherwise, rent the movie and enjoy yourself more.

I have to say for the first time in my life the movie is way better than the book. This book is totally disjointed and full of unnecesary profanity. The author comes across as very immature and a total whiner. Don't bother buying it, the movie is much more enjoyable.
