asset to those who want a better understanding, or a unique perspective on another life and way of being.

There are few words that would do this story justice, deeply personal accounts told in an all-encompassing way, giving a flavor for the women of Afghanistan that will open new doors for readers of all ages and stages of life.

The prose is lovely and lyrical, the main storyteller is Rahima, the youngest of three sisters that were sold into marriage by their father when Rahima was just thirteen. Descriptive and emotive details give readers the insight into all of the confusion, fear, resentment and even obeisance to traditions that are centuries, if not millennia old. Rahima was the "son' of the family, the bacha posh, given freedoms that other women do not have, yet never allowing her to rise above her actual position and restrictions as a woman. With current and remembered events, a recurring thread from an unmarried aunt who tells the tale of their great-great grandmother a guard to the King's harem, and plenty of beauty centered on the vista,, the arts and poetry of the country, we see Rahima grow and expand her internal life and determination to be more than just the low bar set for the women of her country.

What remain constant and indefatigable are the women: every woman who is struggling to survive and adapt to a country where wars, power struggles, political upheaval and religious fanatics are part of the daily landscape, and bound to change repeatedly and without warning. This was an emotionally raucous ride, filled with highs and lows, fear and utter breath-holding as events are laid out to feed a reader's visual and emotional reactions in a way that is fulfilling and visceral, not overwhelming. In fact, the style and voice seem to encourage a sense of hope, tied to the hopes and dreams for different held by Rahima, and the pages almost turn themselves.

I had a difficult time believing that this was a debut novel from Nadia Hashimi: the writing is clear and evocative with information necessary to those unfamiliar with the traditions delineated without overburdening the text with explanations. The words flow beautifully and freely, and the ideas of gender inequality, the rich history and traditions of the Afghani people, and the struggle faced by its women are clearly presented and explained, leaving readers with a far better understanding and feel for the country that extends beyond the political rhetoric of the day.

I will always return to my own belief that well told fictionalized stories that show a culture, person or situation can be an invaluable asset to those who want a better understanding, or a unique perspective on another life and way of being. The Pearl that Broke it's Shell is one of those stories, managing to engage and enchant while all the while presenting a story rich in fact and tradition.

Kabul, 2009: Growing up in a family with five daughters and no sons, Rahima and her sisters can only sporadically attend school, and then, as they grow older, can rarely leave the house. Their mother struggles to support the family as their father becomes increasingly addicted to drugs. But one day their aunt, Khala Shaima, makes a suggestion: as a bacha posh, Rahima can become a son-dressing as a boy, with a boy's name, tread as a boy-until she is of marriageable age. She will be able to attend school and go to the marketplace. It's an old custom, but one that most of society turns a blind eye to when girls are young. And then Khala Shaima begins to tell a story that transforms Rahima's life: the story of her great-great-grandmother, Shekiba.
Kabul, 1909: Shekiba, the daughter of a rural farming family, is disfigured in an accident as a child. I was pulled into this story from the very beginning and couldn't stop reading until I was done. I loved Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and A Thousand Splendid Suns and read this one with even more interest than the other two. I can't believe this a debut novel. Nadia Hashimi writes like that of a well-seasoned author and this is destined to become a bestseller for sure. I definitely didn't want this one to end and hope that there will be some sort of sequel. What a powerful read this was and one I won't soon forget!

THE DEFINITIVE BOOK FOR CLEANING UP "MENTAL CLUTTER" HOLDING YOU BACK!

I have been a victim of "monkey mind" for as long as I can remember. Years ago, when I tried to get a better handle on the events that were controlling my life, I focused on the external forces that I was sure had everything to do with my success [and failure] in life. If I was happy, something made me happy. If I was sad or depressed, something else made that happen, too. In my quest to gain greater control of my own life I realized that the thoughts I was creating every moment had everything to do with the quality of life I would experience at any given moment. Getting to the point, "Declutter Your Mind" is a powerful book on gaining total control of your mind, environment and shaping the future as you want it to be and not just relying on life to happen as it should.

In their third book in this series, Steve [Scott] and Barrie [Davenport] have written a book that targets one of the most critical areas we all struggle with: a life full of clutter. As they point out from the intro, your thoughts create reality, from stress and productivity to feeding into emotions, we can control and direct our thoughts to work for us instead of against us.

The book kicks off with the 4 causes of mental clutter:
• Stress
• The Paradox of Choice
• Too Much Stuff
• The Negativity Bias

The next section gives us four mental declutter habits that add serious weight to both physical and mental health. The first is "Focused Deep Breathing" where we learn the full value of focusing on deep breathing on a regular basis. The second is "Meditation" and the authors say "we suggest meditation as a tool to help you train your mind and control your thoughts." Steve and Barrie introduce the simple 11-step process to use for building the mediation habit. Next is the "Reframe All Negative Thoughts" habit. Here you will learn the "six strategies you can use throughout your day to break the pattern and begin taming your mind." Finally we have the "Teach Your Old Mind New Tricks" habit. Here we have four great strategies for gaining greater control of your thoughts instead of being a slave to them.

Honestly, I was sold on this book after the first chapter. The 4 Mental Habits are enough to add incredible value to your life. But there are three more sections that add more weight:

Part 2 is about "Decluttering Your Obligations" and determining the Core Values as, according to the authors, “one of the simplest ways to eliminate mental clutter and live a more fulfilling life is to define your values and guiding principles for your life." In this section we learn four awesome strategies for nailing your life values, clarifying priorities, Mindful Goal Setting with Quarterly Smart Goals, and Connecting Goals to Passions.

Part 3, Decluttering Your Relationships, is the section of this book I needed the most. Because relationships are largely responsible for driving many people into stressful fits of rage, from kids to parents to friends, you don't want to miss this part. Declutter Your Relationships introduces 4 Relationship Strategies guaranteed to improve, empower and strengthen your communication with people. On every level you can have relationships that function in a healthier way. Steve and Barrie show us that by being mindful of others, we develop deeper levels of empathy and emotional control.

Part 4 is about simplifying your surroundings. Where you spend the most time has a huge impact on your happiness and state of mind. This section has enough juice in it to make your living space a business powerhouse if you clean it up. As the authors state: "When your environment is cluttered, the visual chaos restricts your ability to focus."

This is a definite recommend for people looking to have a simplified and calmer lifestyle.

Written for the Overwhelmed

I'll start this review with my subjective opinion of the book’s shortcomings:
1. The author doesn’t mention using exercise as a technique against mind clutter.
I know that exercising isn't a method to declutter your mind per se, but neither is gratitude journaling. And that was indicated as one of the ways you can deal with clutter in your head.
I was surprised by this "omission", because I know that S.J. is a fitness nut (compared with to the majority of the population); this maniac runs marathons.
Two advantages of exercising that come to mind off the top of my head: it reduces stress, and it provides you the time to think through your issues.
Exercises were mentioned many times throughout the book, but never as a one of the main remedies against mind clutter.
2. Divorcing to reduce mind clutter.
I guess it's a cultural thing. My worldview doesn't include the possibility of divorce. Period. For me, this section of the book equated to the planning of murder in cold blood, while considering its pros and cons.
Barrie and Steve were first to admit that "Letting go of any relationship is not a quick proposition", but they included this section in the book anyway. It sent some cold shivers down my spine.
That’s a very short list of “shortcoming.” The list of benefits this book offers is much longer.

Here’s a few I’ve highlighted:
1. A wide range of ways to tackle "voices in your head" are described.
Having now read about organizing your space to reduce "digital clutter", I agree it is a very sensible approach to reduce the number of impulses that stimulate your monkey brain. When the authors systematically explain how those things contribute to your mind clutter, it's obvious. However, I wouldn't have thought about this on my own.
In addition, other sections made immediate perfect sense, like improving one's self-talk.

This topic does seem a little woo doesn’t it? Voices in Your Head. Yet I'm amazed how down-to-earth this book was for me. It's hard to explain without reading the content.
To aptly illustrate the ease of applying the book's content: the day after reading it, I performed the "loving meditation" technique described inside.

3. You can easily identify the parts which will be useful.
I think this is the biggest strength of "Declutter Your Mind".
Each piece of advice stands alone; a small part that can be taken and applied without reference to the rest. Each piece of instruction is clear and to the point. You will find little to no fluff in this book.
Because of how separate parts of the book are organized, you can read the Table of Contents, open only the part that refers to your situation (e.g. you have problems with self-talk or relationships) take a few pearls from that part and immediately implement them.
I've read the whole book only because I was interested how the authors tackled such a big and seemingly mysterious subject. But I could have had major benefit from reading only the part about relationships, as that is an area in which I experience some troubles.

4. This book is written for the overwhelmed.
I'm astounded how well "Declutter Your Mind" is organized. The instructions are highly detailed too.
Considering the wide range of techniques and suggestions offered, it might be thought that a ‘cluttered mind’ would go into overload. Not so. At each step you receive detailed step-by-step advice on how to clean up untidiness in your head.
You’ll find this book a treasure if you struggle with in-your-head noise. You’ll be armed with a whole arsenal of loaded anti-clutter weapons.

5. There are many personal stories.
This is why I love self-publishing. This book doesn’t preach theory, it illuminates good practice.
Barrie and Steve struggled with these issues like any of us (and they still struggle occasionally), and they’ve shared their experience in a relatable way. Their stories make it easier to retain their lessons

6. I identify with their methods.
Mind clutter is an issue that spills into all areas of life. As an author and coach, I regularly prescribe many of the methods indicated in this book: gratitude journaling, writing things down, journaling and more. I know that they work; I’ve experienced this firsthand, and confidently vote for their approach.

He began his career in Los Angeles, CA as a Scheduling Engineer, earning his LEED AP credential along the way in 2008. The turnaround began on February 11, 1929, with the signing of the Lateran Treaty between the Vatican and fascist leader Benito Mussolini. Through this deal Mussolini gained the support of the staunchly Catholic Italian populace, who at the time followed the lead of the Church. In return, the Church received, among other benefits, a payment of $90 million, sovereign status for the Vatican, tax-free property rights, and guaranteed salaries for all priests throughout the country from the Italian government. With the stroke of a pen the pope had solved the Vatican's budgetary woes practically overnight, yet he also put a great religious institution in league with some of the darkest forces of the 20th century.

Based on his years of experience as a consultant for the FBI, Williams produces explosive and never-before published evidence of the Church's morally questionable financial dealings with sinister organizations over seven decades through today. He examines the means by which the Vatican accrued enormous wealth during the Great Depression by investing in Mussolini's government, the connection between Nazi gold and the Vatican Bank, the vast range of Church holdings in the postwar boom period, Paul VI's appointment of Mafia chieftain Michele Sindona as the Vatican banker, a billion-dollar counterfeit stock fraud uncovered by Interpol and the FBI, the "Ambrosiano Affair" called "the greatest financial scandal of the 20th Century" by the New York Times, the mysterious death of John Paul I, profits from an international drug ring operating out of Gdansk, Poland, and revelations about current dealings.

Burdened by a lurid title, this is a short history of the politics and finances of the Vatican during the last hundred years. As in his Complete Idiot's guides to the Crusades and to the lives of the saints, Williams displays an ability to compress a great deal of information in a short, highly readable way. His main argument is that the current financial strength of the Roman Catholic Church as well as many of its problems began in 1929 with the signing of the Lateran Treaty, in which a financially besieged Pope Pius XI exchanged recognition and support of Mussolini's Fascist government for more than $90 million and the establishment of the Vatican as a sovereign state. Williams traces how the Vatican's new emphasis on financial stability led it into other morally questionable financial arrangements with Adolf Hitler, the fascist state of Croatia and reputed Sicilian Mafia financier Michele Sindona. He examines carefully the establishment and workings of the Instituto per le Opere di Religione, commonly known as the Vatican Bank, "an entity unto itself without corporate or ecclesiastical ties to any other agency within the Holy See." While parts of the book overlap with other recent works on the Vatican and the popes (especially on Pius XI's refusal to censure the brutal ethnic cleansing of Orthodox Serbs and Jews by Croatia's Ustashi regime), this is a surprisingly solid short look at the dubious financial dealings of the Vatican from the 1920s to the present.

On February 11, 1929, Pope Pius XI signed the Lateran Treaty with Mussolini's government, affirming Il Duce and netting him the political capital necessary for a secure Fascist future in exchange for $90 million in cash, a new tax-exempt papal state on Vatican Hill, government salaries for Italian parish priests, and the promise of both power and financial security. With it was formed the Vatican's Special Administration of the Holy See, the cleric-free investment arm of the Vatican, in the care of Bernardino Nogara, financial architect of the German Reichsbank. Thus ended the church's long-standing ban against usury and began a tradition of financially rewarding Faustian relationships with some of the twentieth century's most unsavory elements, including Nazi Germany and the Sicilian Mafia. Williams, a church historian who has also done FBI consulting, also investigates the suspicious death of reformer John Paul I and the shadiness of business as usual under John Paul II. I heard this writer speak on the subjects of Islam and terrorism. He is very knowledgeable on the subject of Islam but is rather dry in his presentation. I purchased this book along with his other one on Islam for someone else. Hopefully, his writing is more exciting than his speaking.

Great history book

Growing up in America, one of my favorite topics in school was history, be it American, Western, or world history. Never in all those classes did I come across anything like the tales told in this book. The author is a historian of Christianity, and in this book he gives an inside history of the Vatican, with an emphasis on the 20th century. Specifically, he tells the facts that the Vatican would not like people to know. The major events covered in this book are:

1. The Vatican's treaty with Mussolini and the Fascist Party in Italy whereby the Vatican would get its own land and country from Italy. In exchange, the Vatican would support the Fascists publicly and privately. This occurred in 1929, I think.

2. The Vatican's agreement with Hitler in the 1930s whereby the Vatican would pressure Catholics in Germany to not oppose Hitler. In return, the Nazis gave money to the Vatican in the form of a church tax levied on German Catholics.

3. The Vatican covering up for some of its officials who took part in the Holocaust.

4. The Vatican helping Nazi scientists escape to the US at the end of WWII. In return, the Allies kept secret knowledge about the Vatican's complicy in the Holocaust and private arrangements with the Axis powers.

5. The Vatican aligning itself with the Mafia after WWII to help secure inroads into foreign governments, and get good deals on investments world-wide.

All in all, this was a very impressive book. It is quite short, and probably as easy to read as a Harry Potter book, though shorter than a Potter book. The book is written in chronological order, and there are a lot of references to various primary and secondary sources.

I highly recommend this book.
