Goldilocks and the Three Bears: A Tale Moderne, by Steven Guarnaccia

When she discovers the three bears’ house in the woods, Goldilocks ventures in and makes herself at home. According to tradition, she sits in the chairs, samples the meal laid on the table, and takes a nap. Yet something is different in this retelling of the classic story of the girl with golden locks.

Though our heroine is the same, our bears certainly are not. These bears are hip; they have a sense of style and a love of design. Their split-level home is filled with furnishings created by an international crowd of celebrated designers, from Alvar Aalto to Charles and Ray Eames to Isamu Noguchi.

Children will delight in this long-beloved story given new life by Steven Guarnaccia’s stylized artwork—and may even pick up a design tip or two.

Very "moderne" twist on Goldilocks and the Three Bears
By LonestarReader
Traditional telling but with a very "moderne" twist as the bears in this family are connoisseurs of the decorative arts and cutting edge modern design. The chair that Goldilocks breaks is a Charles&Ray Eames molded plywood LCW chair, 1946 (the end papers provide a excellent index to the bears' furniture and interior design aesthetic)

Mama Bear's chair is a Arne Jacobsen Danish Egg chair, circa 1957. The beds are Allessandro Becchi and D'Urbino Lomazzi.

Papa Bear looks like a Beat poet, Mama Bear is a bohemian while Baby Bear wears a vintage coonskin cap.

These traditional retelling are excellent read alouds. I can imagine a fun library lesson paired with photos and information about the designers and architects. More please.

A fun and fabulous new interpretation of a timeless children's classic fairy tale
By Midwest Book Review
"Goldilocks and the Three Bears: A Tale Moderne" is a fun and fabulous new interpretation of a timeless children's classic fairy tale. In this version, the three bears are a very hip, suave, chic, sophisticated family with immense savoir-faire and startlingly modern design tastes. In a word, they are cool. So while the basic structure of the story remains unchanged, perhaps somewhat of a warning to children to respect the privacy of others' homes, the illustrations convey volumes of education in form, function and design in the artistic furnishing of the split-level home of the bears in the middle of the forest. The extremely jazzy Bears have casually scattered in their home and Italian "Anfibio" sofa (1971), Arne Jacobsen Danish "Ant" side chairs (1952-55), an Isamu Noguchi chess table (1947), an Alvar Aalto Finnish "Savoy" vase (1936), a George Nelson "Kite" clock (1953), and much more. A handy visual guide to the objects d'art is found on the front and back inner pages of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears." The truly unique illustrations are created through a complex series of steps described by the artist: "I use a brush and India ink to give the line a fat, luscious quality, and to allow me to vary the line from very thin to very thick. I also use India ink to create the black background. On the back, I draw with an opaque, pastel-colored pen. I fill in areas - first outlined in black - with Winsor & Newton watercolors, which I mix to achieve the palette I want." This has resulted in a children's book that compresses artistic education and awareness into a fun and unforgettable experience. Though designed for young readers (age 3-4 and up), "Goldilocks and the Three Bears, A Tale Moderne" is sure to have appeal to the art-appreciating adult audience as well.

So I got this book in fairly good condition, however the front cover and the pages attached to it are detached, as well as I can't use the code in the book. Wish I had known prior to purchase. I may just return the book, given the fact that the code is no good, and the leaves seem like their gonna fall out once I start flipping through this book.

A Day in the Life: One Family, the Beautiful People, and the End of the Sixties, by Robert Greenfield

A Day in the Life is the story of how the ideal marriage between two young and extraordinarily beautiful members of the English upper class fell apart as the psychedelic dreams of the sixties gave way to the harsh, hard-rock reality of the seventies. A tender, moving, and often harrowing look at the moment in time when the counterculture collided with the international jet set, A Day in the Life captures the spirit of that era and the people who lived through it with unerring accuracy and heartfelt precision.

When Tommy Weber and Susan “Puss” Coriat, London’s most beautiful couple, were married in 1964, it was the fitting end to a storybook romance. But the fast cars Tommy loved to race, their celebrity friends, and the huge trust fund Puss had inherited masked a tortured truth—both had suffered through oppressive and neglectful childhoods and were now caught up in a wildly extravagant lifestyle that neither Puss’ inheritance nor Tommy’s increasingly desperate schemes could support. Six years later, Puss found herself wandering around India with her two sons while Tommy, who was now smuggling drugs to survive, lived in London with a stunning young actress. A Day in the Life is also the stirring account of how the couple’s tow sons—one of whom is the well-known actor Jake Weber—somehow managed to survive a childhood that would have destroyed those of lesser spirit.

An unbelievable true-life tale that often reads like a novel, A Day in the Life follow the fortunes and misfortunes of one remarkable family while also introducing us to an extensive cast of supporting characters that includes Keith Richards, Anita Pallenberg, Mick Jagger, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, John Lennon, and Charlotte Rampling, as well as many of the movers and shakers who helped create the “Swinging London” scene.

From Publishers Weekly
In this roving relationship biography, journalist Greenfield (Exile on Main St.) documents the end of swinging London and the psychedelic 1960s through the breakdown of a high-society, scene-hopping married couple. Tommy Weber and Susan "Puss" Coriat were pure products of their times: Tommy was a racecar driver-turned-drug supplier (for no less than the Rolling Stones); Puss's experimentation with LSD and quest for a spiritual guru would lead to schizophrenia, involuntary hospitalization and electro-shock therapy. The couple's two young sons, caught between their coke-addled father (Tommy once taped a pound of cocaine to each of them to get through customs) and their mother's steady mental decline, prove remarkably resilient. Following the couple's divorce, Tommy and his sons lived with Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards (and his hangers-on) in the south of France, where Tommy got heavily into heroin; Puss's thwarted plan to meet them there in 1971 would presage her suicide by sleeping pills. Capturing the tenor and tone of the era, Greenfield's dysfunctional family is just as mesmerizing as his previous big-name subjects like Jerry Garcia and Timothy Leary.

Review
Kirkus Reviews, 4/15/09
“A eulogy for the 1960s…Though it often reads like an extended society gossip column, the narrative is studded with enough trivia and name-dropping to engage ex-hippies and other fans of ’60s culture.”

San Francisco Bay Guardian, 5/6/09
“This book [is] a great gift from the cosmos.”

New York Post, 5/10/09
“A look at the ’60s through the lens of two of Swinging England’s beautiful people.”

Seattle Times, 5/17/09
“Greenfield's reporting skill is admirable, and when he quotes Puss' last letter to her sons, it is bone-chilling. As the author of two previous books on the Rolling Stones, Greenfield brings the decade to life as well as any writer, without ignoring the darkness that soon envelops this family.”

Tuscon Citizen, 5/7/09
“This highly readable cautionary tale centers on two privileged people who lost their bearings in a hazy world of drugs, free love and unfulfilled dreams.”

Monterey Herald, 5/21/09
“His books, articles, profiles, stories and scripts have made his voice one of the prominent spokespersons for the 1960s. In his work, he delves beneath the surface of the lives of some of the most important figures of this music generation, showing readers the humanity that lives beneath fame and glory.”

January.com, 5/15/09
“Reads, at times, like a novel…This book is just stuffed full of…juicy tidbits.”

Washington Times, 5/31/09
“[An] extraordinary story, part magical mystery tour and part morality tale…Greenfield has done a marvelous job of re-creating the wild ride of Tommy and Puss with a splendid immediacy…As rendered here anyway, they are in themselves fascinating characters, oddly compelling and attractive despite their glaring flaws…Greenfield is a superb guide through the turbulent world where this odd couple led their frenzied lives…One of the most powerful cautionary tales about the heady Sixties that I have ever read.”

Los Angeles Times, 5/31/09
“[A] fascinating book about beautiful people gone down.”

Blogcritics.org, 5/2//09
“[A] well-researched biography...To some extent, [Puss and Tommy’s] story could be a metaphor for their era, a tale of promise that, with liberal doses of ‘sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll,’ devolved into self-absorption and self-ruin.”

Boston Globe, 6/4/09
“Well researched, and the interviews with Jake and Charley Weber, the couple’s tempest-tossed sons, are engrossing…Greenfield is a vivid writer with an unmatched grip on the tawdry. Many anecdotes are entertaining.”

New York Waste, June 2009
“[An] amazing book…told brilliantly…A true story of two extremely fascinating people…The most exciting biography to come out in a very long time!”

The Yummy List, 6/27/09
“The sort of real life that defies fiction, this is a blistering beach read for anyone who's more taken by the late 60s social upheaval than the Gossip Girl/East Hampton entitlement and indulged behaviour.”

WTVF Talk of the Town, 7/7/09
“The fascinating story of what happens when there is too much drugs, sex, and rock and roll.”

Glide magazine’s Hidden Track, 7/21/09

Music Connection, August 2009
“[A] heartbreaking true tale of the unraveling of a seemingly idyllic English upper-class marriage, told against the backdrop of the end of the ’60s and its rock star elite.”

Elmore, Sept/Oct 2009
“An impeccably researched transport vessel into the day-in, day-out friendships, haphazard propositions, manic depression, casual sex, irresponsible parenting, Hendrix-hanging, Stones-insider, drug-trafficking heyday of these guiltily interesting yo-yos…I can spot a Greenfield book, and his fans will find this one worth the read.”

Howard County Times(MD), 8/6/09
“Dazzling and sobering in equal measures…Undeniably fascinating.”

Augusta Metro Spirit
“A virtual scrapbook of sixties culture…Greenfield holds a deft hand for narration…Greenfield uncovers the passion, power, and intrigue of a cultural transition that still leaves its effects upon the current landscape.”

Midwest Book Review
“The 60s and sentiments come to life in a solid true-life story of social change at its fastest pace.”

The Sixties: A Journal of History, Politics and Culture, Volume III, Issue I“Greenfield makes a compelling case for revisiting Weber and Coriat as the collateral damage of a society-wide experiment with drugs, liberation and free expression.”

A Day in the Life
By Jeaninne M. Kato
Wonderfully written account of a family that gets caught in the crossfire of the 60's counterculture revolution, which included all the sex, drugs and rock n roll possible. Enjoyed learning about the personal histories that led up to this trainwreck of a family. Even more intriquing is that we know the offspring as actors in the public eye. A real page-turner.

The darker side of the Swinging Sixties
By sb-lynn
No spoilers.

I got this book because I had read an interview with actor Jake Weber, where he talked about his turbulent upbringing during the 1960s. He was one of two sons of a young socialite named "Puss" Susan Coriat, and her husband, Tommy Weber.

I started reading the book, and I ended up finishing it in one sitting. Robert Greenfield really manages to tell a compelling and interesting story, yet still maintain a journalistic distance.

Both Puss Coriat, and Tommy Weber came from privileged, wealthy families. Yet both sets of parents divorced, and Puss and Tommy were shuttled around to various schools and relatives. Puss Coriat's mother Pricilla was well-known - she was known as the "little rich girl" and was one of the wealthiest women of her time, yet she was foolish and a spendthrift. Tommy's parents were likewise pretty dysfunctional.

Puss and Tommy meet and fall in love and marry right at the start of the craziness that marked the mid-to late 1960s. They were right in the center of it all, and they hung around with all the celebrity rockers of their time, in particular the Rolling Stones and Keith Richards. Throw in to this mix a lot of various drugs, (LSD, marijuana, heroin, among others) and you can kind of see where this is going.

I don't want to give anything away, but there is not a good ending for either parent, in particular, Puss. She develops a sort of drug induced schizophrenia, and had an apparent psychotic break along with depression. (Her reaction reminded me a lot of Sid Barret's from Pink Floyd, and in fact he is even mentioned in this regard.) Tommy's life continues with the focus on drugs, sex and rock 'n roll, which doesn't serve him well as he ages.

In short, this is a fascinating little book that really gives you a sense of what that decade and lifestyle were all about. It's one thing to choose that way of life if you are on your own, but it's a different case if like Puss and Tommy, you have two small boys. My heart went out to those boys, and it's a tribute to them both that they seem to have turned out so well.

Recommended, especially if you like reading about the wild times that were the 1960s, and what it was like to have been a part of the madness. My only criticism is that there are some substantial gaps in the narrative, but that's not the fault of the author as much as there were few (competent) witnesses around to say what happened. I'm not sure if I ever felt like I "knew" Puss, or for that matter even Tommy, but the book amply demonstrates how people with such promising futures could mess up their lives due to partying, drugs and alcohol, in a decade that seemed to revel in it all.

A Modern Fairy Tale
By Jerry Pompili
What an amazing story! A Fairy Tale but one that doesn't end with "they lived happily ever after". Greenfield reveals a part of the swinging 60's that ads to the saying "sex drugs and rock'n roll", heartbreak and despair. I was totally engrossed in this story and could not put it down. WHen is the movie coming out?

One of the most useful training books in many years.
By captainrobbo
I think that this is one of the most useful training books to appear in many, many years.

Julian Goater is well known in the UK as one of our best ever distance runners. He was within fifteen seconds of the world 10,000m record at his best in 1982, but is perhaps best known for what may have been the most dramatic "peak race" in UK running history, when he won the National Cross Country against a top class field by almost two minutes in 1981. He's also a very smart guy, and has gone on to learn while working as a coach, sports massage therapist and world-class Masters duathlete. I've heard him speak on several occasions and had been eagerly awaiting this book, which has exceeded my expectations.

The majority of training manuals start with some semi-academic principles of periodisation and physiology then dive into detailed schedules for different distances. This is completely different. Sets, reps and mileage figures are only a minor part of the book - indeed, the obligatory 'schedules' chapter is just five pages long, showing typical weeks from the 10-15 mile per week level up to a marathon schedule. Each of the 13 chapters covers something you can put into practice very quickly that might help you to run a bit faster. Some of the key ideas I would pick out are:

* Attitude. Julian believes that competing is fun, exciting and natural at all levels and there are plenty of strategies to help fan the flames. Yes, it's perfectly acceptable for forty-somethings to get psyched up to outkick that teenager just in front in the local parkrun.

* Every run should have a purpose. Fast days should be fast, and easy days easy. His ideas on what to actually do on a recovery run are priceless - obvious with hindsight yet I had occurred to me now anyone I know in 30 years of running.

* The importance of speed. Track athletes won't need any convincing here, but anyone who just 'goes for a run' four times a week and things that their local 5k time trial is 'speedwork' will find all the encouragement they need to run faster and train through all of the gears - and this is a key to improvement for people at this level. And for someone who excelled from 5k up to 9 miles, he challenged himself to do surprisingly short, fast intense sessions.

* Running technique. He urges you to examine your own, experimenting with body positions and cadence while out on a run. However, there is none of the dogma associated with schools like Pose or Chi running. There's also a large section on breathing, with the emphasis on learning to get more air through your lungs.

* Old school training: how to run fartlek properly, the importance of hills and cross country. When everyone else is talking about lactate levels and precise paces, he keeps it simple and just stresses the importance of running at a variety of (fast) speeds, and regularly using these older techniques. I remember one talk when Julian and Dave Clarke, another national champion, agreed vigorously while grinning from ear to ear that group fartleks were where you figured out exactly how to make your teammates and rivals suffer ;-)

* Stretching. The recent studies showing that really extensive stretches slightly cut your explosive power have given runners everywhere an excuse to skip stretching, but deep down you know that he's right and you ought to stretch out the stiff bits, whether before sessions or in the evening. Julian is also a qualified sports massage therapist. He covers the key stretches runners should do in some detail.

* Peaking. His national victory is famous and he has spent years analysing what produced it, and his advice on what to do in the last 8-9 days before a race is extremely sound and seems to work well.

In summary, it's hard to say exactly to whom this is geared and I think there is something for everyone. This is an ideal first training book for a youngster getting into the sport, or for someone who has been running to get fit and started to enjoy 5ks and 10ks and wants to take things a bit more seriously. On the other hand, for someone who has grown up through club athletics and competed for decades, there are still new ideas, or things our first coach told us that we have probably forgotten all about along the way. Finally, for anyone aged 40+, who grew up in the glory days of British distance running, there are plenty of stories of that great generation of coaches and athletes which bring back fond memories.

Thoroughly recommended.

How to run better - easy to read guide for runners of every level
By Keith M. H. Donald
Julian's new book, just published, is written by an athlete who has been there, done that, worn the vest and often got the medal.

Very few people are placed better than Julian to write about how to achieve your potential in running with this thought provoking, motivational and often humorous book.

However, despite Julian's performance as an elite international athlete let's get one crucial matter out into the open, this is definitively a book for runners at all levels; joggers, (those casual runners who want to keep fit, lose some weight and jog a few miles a week), as well as competitive runners who want to do better next week than they did last week.

The chapters in the book are set out in a logical, readable form, interspersed with concise comments highlighted in the text with a short summary of the chapter at the end of each section. Julian focuses on the 5, (or is it 6?), Ss: speed, suppleness, strength, stamina, skill and psychology. The importance of the mind is emphasised; the author believes that many of us do not achieve our true potential because often we lack self-belief, that ability to challenge our mental boundaries which inhibit our performance in races. This is as true for the social runner as it is for the runner who races regularly and wants to run faster.

Whilst this is a book full of advice, guidance and challenges, it does refer to Julian's contemporaries, (notably Dave Bedford, Steve Jones, Charlie Spedding and Henry Rono), referring to their views of training and competing as well as those of the author. (As an aside, Spedding's book "from last to first" is a classic autobiography of a sportsperson, an average runner who strived to be better). Julian is a great believer in each of us being able to achieve our potential by listening to our body and being honest with ourselves. However, never "over run" or "over race" is a clear message, and Julian warns runners at all levels that sometimes they need to say "No, I'm not going out this week-end for a few miles, but thanks anyway" in order to maintain that freshness and eagerness for running throughout the year.

It is not all serious stuff. There is a lot of light relief. "The Art of Running Faster" contains some great anecdotes; the one about the Ethiopian runners leading in the World Cross-Country Championships who thought that they had finished after three laps of a four lap race made me laugh and cry at the same time.

Those of us who race and follow athletics know Julian was always a great "club man", whether for Shaftesbury or the R.A.F. Not surprisingly, Julian advocates getting involved in a club for several reasons, (particularly for advice, guidance, support and friendship), emphasising the social aspects for club runners at all levels.

In summary, this is an inspirational book. If you are a runner and want to be a better runner, then this book will make you want to put on those training shoes and kit and go out for a run. Very helpfully, Julian has included an easy to follow training schedules at the end of the book, (written for runners of all levels and ability).

You may not achieve the times that Julian and his colleagues achieved, but this book will give you the encouragement to make the best effort to do so. It's a great read from a great athlete and now a leading coach.

A refreshing and accessible guide to all
By Rob Cameron
Reviewed by Rob Cameron (former Scottish international and North of England Road & XC team manager)

If there was one word that could be used to describe this book it's `accessible'. The book is written in such a manner that anyone, elite athlete, beginner, coach, aspiring coach or PE teacher could use it to support the development of any running programme.
What I particularly liked about the book is the way Julian uses his vast experience both anecdotally and professionally to advise the reader of how to build up a programme, how to sustain performance and indeed improve performance, as well as looking at how to avoid, protect oneself from injury.
Julian makes running fun and uses his knowledge of the art of running and the key principles of the importance of hill training and cross country tradition which I remember fondly as how I got started and introduces us to how we can begin to shape performance through running technique and the essentials of stretching.
Throughout the book, you can glimpse the highlights or top tips; these allow the reader to succinctly put in prospective the chapters and give practical advice.
It's refreshing to read a book which reflects my principles to running fast, as a young athlete my success was honed on many of Julian's text, particularly on the need to stretch and improve one's cadence. He does this through key points, how to and coaching points ending each chapter with a key summary.
If you are new to running or an experienced coach you can't but see beauty in this new addition to the running library, I recommend it to anyone involved in the sport which gave such great athletes as Julian himself.
Thanks, this is a text book I will use time and time again, as a dad (to 2 aspiring athletes), team manager and school teacher.

A Monk Swimming A Memoir, by Malachy McCourt

Slapped with a libel suit after an appearance on a talk show, Malachy McCourt crows, "If they could only see me now in the slums of Limerick, a big shot, sued for a million. Bejesus, isn't America a great and wonderful country?" His older brother Frank's Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir, Angela's Ashes, took its somber tone from the bleak atmosphere of those slums, while Malachy's boisterous recollections are fueled by his zestful appreciation for the opportunities and oddities of his native land.

He and Frank were born in Brooklyn, moved with their parents to Ireland as children, then returned to the States as adults. This book covers the decade 1952-63, when Malachy roistered across the U.S., Europe, and Asia, but spent most of his time in New York City. There his ready wit and quick tongue won him an acting job with the Irish Players, a semiregular stint on The Tonight Show hosted by Jack Paar, and friendships with some well-heeled, well-born types who shared his fondness for saloon life and bankrolled him in an East Side saloon that may have been the first singles bar. He chronicles those events--and many others--with back-slapping bonhomie.

Although McCourt acknowledges the personal demons that pursued him from his poverty-stricken childhood and destroyed his first marriage, this is on the whole an exuberant autobiography that pays tribute to the joys of a freewheeling life.

Taking up where brother Frank left off, McCourt recounts his early days in New York. The title comes from McCourt's youthful misunderstanding of the phrase amongst women in the Hail Mary.

From Booklist
Coat-tailing the success of brother and performance partner Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes (1996), Malachy weighs in with his own memoir, recounting his raucous early days in the U.S. Picking up after the childhood so vividly described in Angela's Ashes, A Monk Swimming (a mishearing of the Hail Mary phrase "Blessed art thou amongst women") recounts the unlikely tales of Malachy's serendipitous success as an actor and a bar owner after arriving in New York penniless and uneducated. Amidst tales of his drinking and general carousing with the likes of Peter O'Toole, Richard Burton, Jack Paar, and Robert Mitchum, Malachy also tells of his unexpected meeting with the queen of England, rooming with a psychotic socialite, and disastrous first marriage and inability to accept its demise. By far the most interesting section is the vivid portrayal of smuggling gold bars from Zurich to India, which he did when desperate for a job. The language and storytelling have the indelible Irish lilt and genius for irony. They range from understated to downright scatological, and they are always paced for maximum payoff. The success of Frank's book and the huge media blitz for this one should make it a much-requested title, but those who appreciated the profundity of Angela's Ashes will be disappointed by this less meaty memoir. Credit Deserved For What It Is...NOT Another ASHES
By Michael D. Weiss
While many have made the mistake of comparing Malachy McCourt's adult memoir, A MONK SWIMMING, to his brother Frank's more tragic childhood recount in the Pulitzer Prize-winning ANGELA'S ASHES, I preferred reading the book on a completely separate level. As this younger brother's memoir is in a sense a continuation of the McCourt saga, which picks up from a different perspective on the hopeful ending of ASHES, it is a story of a different time, place and person, bereft of most of the second-hand misery that accompanied the 362 pages of Frank's heart-wrentching tale.
The character worries of ANGELA'S ASHES included surviving famine, tuburculosis and the general abominations of poverty. A MONK SWIMMING grapples mainly with the issues of managing an acting sometime career, excessive pubbing and sordid sexual conquests and the more literarily comical debacles derived from such.
Lacking the degree of drama, this book has perhaps been thought of as a disappointment in the wake of its seeming predecessor. Yet judged on its own merits and intentions, A MONK SWIMMING is a terrific piece altogether, told with all the heart and lilt that apparently runs strong in the McCourt clan. Malachy chronicles the charming, wily escapades of an unapologetic drunk--himself--in this, a story about an Irish immigrant living (and occasionally thriving) in America. His wit and style are a wonderful amalgam of Irish irony and lyricism with New York abrasiveness and sophistication.
There IS a tragic element to this narrative, however, in that Malachy proves to be much like his wretch of a father (for whom he was conveniently named), a man who oftentimes put the bottle before the family. In that there is a contrite quality to his descriptions of certain events, such as losing his first wife and not being allowed to see his children for a time. This adds reality and cynicism to an otherwise humorous bio that appears as the anecdotes progress through Malachy's evolvement as, dare I say, more American than Irish.
A MONK SWIMMING ought to be viewed and enjoyed for what it is: a genuine, tipsy romp, as clever and raucous as its author. It is not another ANGELA'S ASHES nor, rest assured, was it ever purported to be.

Dealing with the Past: A Less Romantic View
By A Customer
In "A Monk Swimming," Malachy McCourt recounts stories of his less-than-mature response to his awful childhood. His brother Frank, on the other hand, gives us a more refined, crafted, and artistic story. Both versions are worth reading. It's interesting to see how two related people emerged so differently from the same circumstances.
I like that Malachy McCourt gives no excuses for his behavior. He's a pretty objective recorder of his exploits; he doesn't pretty them up. He admits he drank too much, abandoned his wife and kids, and searched for some peace (unsuccessfully) through sex. He doesn't glorify himself; at the end, I was left with sadness. He closes with a description of his father and the pain of that relationship. This final chapter is the explanation (though not an excuse) for the rest of the exploits in the book.
Frank McCourt is the philosopher while Malachy is the bad kid who has no qualms about telling it like it is. When I read Malachy's version of McCourt history, I thought, 'Ok, poverty is not some romantic world where everyone ends up spouting gorgeous poetry and coming to terms with their past.' Malachy has humor, audacity, and a flare for hyperbole - all these the qualities of a good Irish storyteller. These are stories I could imagine hearing while sitting a bar - stories that are enlarged and enhanced upon each telling. Malachy clearly captures a time and place and a character (himself). Some might not like who he is, but he provides a vivid picture of who he is. He captures, by recounting his escapades, his own tortured response to his childhood.

An entertaining tale
By M. A. Ramos
This is the memoirs of the larger than life, hard-drinking Malachy McCourt. Born in America, rasied in Ireland and then back to New York as an teen. He made a name for himself in New York city as the first celebrity bartender. He was a social mixer, a writer, an actor of stage and screen. His gift for blarney made him a regular on the Tonight Show.
This book is darkly funny. And a bit raw in places, so be warned. But he does tell his story with passion, wit, irreverence and charm. This was a fun read.

The workings behind various circuit building blocks are thoroughly explained. However, it will be a bonus to add a few famous brand name circuits, sort of like inner secrets revealed.

More Magic from the Valve Wizard
By Hank Cohen
Merlin the Valve Wizard has given us another great volume on the science and craft of designing tube amplifiers. If you have already read "Designing Tube Preamps for Guitar and Bass" then you are already familiar with the style. This book has much more detail. Where the first book was about how to design the kind of distortion Mguitar players love this book is about how to do it without distortion. I haven't finished it yet but the style and content are both a delight. I'm enjoying every page and every chapter has some quip that will make you laugh.
