the combination of the way the class was taught, ...

the combination of the way the class was taught, and the way the text book is constructed is too confusing to try and track the flow of instruction. this needs to be put together in a more traditional style. trying to track a jump around(jumps from one tangent to another) instructor is a night mare. the use of the colored boxes to draw test materials from is also, not the norm.
the book by itself =c-. it depends too much on your knowledge prior to taking the class, and it depends too much on an instructor filling in the gaps, and so this is why it gets the rating of 2 stars.

This is a relatively good introduction text book for Networking

This is a relatively good introduction text book for Networking. It gives the background for many of the different technologies that the student will run into the world. It does have some faults due to the fact that some of the software technologies it has in lessons are obsolete, however that is also something a network technician will spend a lot of time dealing with... obsolete technologies that can't be updated or renewed but are still in place years later.

You never really know what someone is going through. My heart broke for Clay. I kept wondering why the author decided to tell the story with Clay as one of the narrators, and in the end, I think I understood why. I found this to be a powerful book, but in a subtle way.

I read the 10th anniversary edition which has extras, including the original ending. I'm not sure which ending I prefer. Both endings are satisfactory towards the story, but both somehow leave me wanting more.

Okay, but a bit cursory

I'm an architect and a beginner photographer and was looking for a good, comprehensive book on architectural photography so I could photograph my jobs for my portfolio. This book has a lot of good technical information, but deviates from the topic many times (in my opinion). For example, there's a sections on the architectural history, the role of the architect, aesthetics in architecture, etc. I don't need this and I think this is been covered extensively in other books. I don't mind if this information is there, but the topics covered could have been given more depth and examples, rather than spending time on tangential subjects.

Mostly, I bought this book because I need to understand the intricacies of lighting interior spaces to get the most beautiful photograph I can. Just when the chapter on lighting was getting good, the author recommends the reader buy his other book "Professional Interior Photography" for more information -- bummer.

So, for someone interested in reading about the subject and related areas, this seems like a good book. For someone like me looking an in-depth book only on architectural photography, I'd recommend to keep looking.

A Good Technical Primer

If you're interested in architectural photography as a profession, you will probably gain some valuable insights from this book. While few of the photographic examples used are what I would call "stunning", the author provides a very methodical and thorough approach to learning the craft. And while certainly not a how-to book for inexperienced photographers, Harris has done a good job of defining the issues and explaining the technical solutions that are inherent to architectural photography.
Everything of importance is explained, from film selection and filtering, to complex exposure formulas and specialized equipment.
A warning though: if you don't have a basic understanding of Geometry, you might have trouble applying some of the concepts in this book (and thus trouble producing attractive architectural photographs). More than any other genre of photography, architectural photography is a thinking man (and woman's) game. You don't "seek out" or "sense" a beautiful photograph so much as carefully manufacture them.

A "must-read" book for aspiring architectural photographers!

Professional Architectural Photography by Michael Harris is a wonderfully informative and beautifully illustrated "must-read" book for any photographer who desires to shoot the interiors and exteriors of buildings. The book is easy to read, concise and to the point, and offers a wealth of information detailing with the art and science of architectural photography. As a professional photographer and photography instructor, I had always desired to try my hand, so to speak, at capturing on film the architectural beauty of historically significant buildings. After reading this book, I can't wait to go out and shoot my own architectural photographs. In fact, I was so motivated by the way the author presented the information contained in the book that I went out a couple weeks later and bought a 4" x 5" large-format view Camera. Trust me! If you think you'd like to dabble in architectural photography, invest in this book. You'll be glad you did! Even if you're not a photographer, but you like viewing photographic images in home remodeling or architectural magazines, this book will teach you much about (and give you a better appreciation for) architectural photography. Who knows? It may even launch you into a new career.

excellent read - MBA reader/reviewer

This book was an inspirational, quick read. The practical story line with life principles twisted throughout was a most-enjoyable way to find myself learning.

A recent MBA grad myself (Kelley School of Business, Indiana University), I would recommend this book to anyone recently out of MBA school. I am confident anyone interested to grow their influence (MBA or not) in this fast paced global economy will find the book insightful/valuable.

I chose this rating because the book was in all ways excellent.

The Art of Business!

This book was recommended to me by my mentor. This book is a parable on influence and its fundamental role in leadership. As Chris describes it: "Influence is the key to success. Influence is the art of business." Through the story of Marcus and Bobby, we learn about the Four Golden Rules of Influence:

1) Live a life of undivided integrity

2) Always demonstrate a positive attitude

3) Consider other people's interests as more important than your own

4) Don't settle for anything less than excellence

While the above learnings are by no means novel, they are formulated and presented in a very educative, entertaining and thoughtful manner. A highly recommended quick read, that as Mark Sanborn writes: "reminds us of the bedrock fundamentals not only of influence but of a life well lived."

Below are some excerpts that I found particularly insightful:

1- "Persuasion is about what you do to other people. It is about techniques... Influence, in the other hand, is about you...Influence is your ability to change another person's thoughts, beliefs, or actions. In order to be successful in business, you have to be able to influence people."

2- "You can't decide if you are going to be a leader. You can only decide if you will become the type of person others want to follow."

3- "Thomas Jefferson quote - there is a 'Natural aristocracy among men, the grounds of which is virtue and talent."

4- On Fishing: "...you've got to have fish...you've got to wait until they are hungry...you have to use the right king of bait...the last important factor in fishing is presentation."

5- "...let me tell you about integrity. It is all you have. It is the foundation of everything else you do. Without it, you are lost in business. Ultimately the relationship between leader and follower, between buyer and seller, is about trust. Without integrity, it is impossible to trust."

6- "Always demonstrate a positive and optimistic attitude. That is how I influence these superstars I have to lead."

7- "What should they do? (When things go wrong) They need to ask the positive and optimistic question: What good can come from this? That question will help you focus on solutions. It will focus you on a better future. And bringing people to a better future is what influence is all about. Optimism is a choice that we make.

8- On leadership by walking around: "...what matters is what you do when you walk around. I make sure that I am looking out for my people and building relationships. I make sure they know that I care about them and am interested in them."

9- "People are attracted to excellence, so when we live our lives with excellence, people view us in a different way than if we didn't. They actually respect us more, and give us more opportunity to influence them."

I needed this textbook for my Statics and Strength of Materials course but the original textbook was just too expensive. I received the book and it felt used, even though I was told it would be brand new. About the Author
Hal Pashler has been Professor of Psychology at University of California, San Diego since receiving his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1985. In 1999, the National Academy of Sciences awarded Pashler the Troland Research Award "for his many experimental breakthroughs in the study of spatial attention and executive control, and for his insightful analysis of human cognitive architecture." Pashler's research has examined selective and divided attention, mechanisms of human learning and the question of how learning can be made more efficient, and visual awareness, among other topics.
