A non-BS fitness book you can actually apply to your life - excellent read

I'm often skeptical of fitness books as they often either give you hollow inspirational sayings or impractical advice on how in order to get 6 pack abs you just need to work out 8 hours a day. What I love about this book is the author creates a framework and mindset that is rooted in reality and actually implementable to your own life. The focus of the book is on how to maintain your fitness (and as a result - make yourself more productive) under the stresses and time constraints of being an entrepreneur. While the book focuses on entrepreneurs, I think the tactics in the book can apply much broader than that to anyone who has ever said "I know I should be more fit, but I don't have the time" which is something I would say constantly. By developing the proper mindset to start you create the circumstance where you will naturally make the choices that push you where you want to go - highly recommended read

Easily the best fantasy series I've read so far

As a voracious reader of fantasy, I've read just about every series out there. The Sword of Truth series, the Kingkiller Chronicles, the Codex Alera series, and The Stormlight Archive just to name a few. What usually bothers me is is just how straightforward the story arch can be. The good guy is miraculously good, discovers incredible powers, fights against bad guy (who is nothing but evil), and succeeds at the very last moment. Sometimes characters are intended to seem intelligent yet they succeed almost purely on luck. In some series the plot will be varied and fascinating, but the writing style will be so verbose you find yourself sloggin through pages and pages to get to the next big thing. Then the story becomes an excercise in waiting for something you know is going to happen.

Brent Weeks' writing style, however, is none of that.

To me the most interesting thing about Brent Weeks is not the twisting and turning of the plot. It's the careful attention he gives to the pacing. He'll cut away from a certain character, leaving you desperately wondering what happens next, but then move into something else completely fascinating and new. You'll forget for a moment how desperate you are to see the next big event. Instead the new perspective is always a perfect compliment, enhancing clarity and furthering the plot in ways that the main story arch could never provide. Even if you do get bored, it wont be for long. There's always something crucial to be seen or learned just a few pages away.

If you like complex world-building that's beautifully creative and easy to understand...
If you like a fast-paced storyline yet appreciate character development...
If you like to see evil and good and everything in between all mixed together...
If you like characters who act as intelligently or stupidly as their personality demands...
If you like social commentary through a diverse cast who each believe in their own principles...
If you like a plot that moves forward by more than the characters' need to not die or not let the bad guy win...
If you like a story that has no clear endgame...
If you like good writing that doesn't bog the story down by being overly styled or descriptive...

This is the series for you.

Ugh, is this YA and no one told me?

Other people have written extensively about the shortcomings of this book so I won't belabor the point. I didn't like the characters. I got through 60% of the book before I had to put it down because I couldn't stand the prattle between them that I think we are supposed to find engaging and amusing. There's something disjointed about a whiny teenager complaining through a war zone as if he's walking through the halls of this junior high. I just couldn't find his character believable.

If You've Run Out of Sanderson Books to Read, Look Here! Excellent Storytelling Awaits...

Excellent storytelling! Brent has created an interesting world, a blend of magic, pirate/civil war era fiepower, meshed with traditional fantasy swords/axes/etc. to create an interesting world in turmoil and at war.

The main character (Kip) is a little unusual in his 'chubby', accident prone, self-deprecating manner, but his humility makes him just likable enough. The other primary character (Gavin) is an excellent character that you find yourself continually hoping doesn't die (no spoiler one way or another here).

The magic system is unique and interesting, and I for one don't mind the detail he goes into explaining it throughout the books (just finished book 2).

Character development is great, and things are continually moving forward, action is always happening... Which is a huge problem with other authors/series. Not in Lightbringer/Black Prism... Things are always moving forward, which I love. Keeps you turning pages and hooked.

The writing style is very conversational and, dare I say, "laid back". There are a lot of contemporary phrases that seem somewhat out of place, but after you settle into it, it colors it uniquely. (This is mostly in the character's thoughts to themselves, which somehow makes it ok).

All in all, I'm really enjoying these books. I was bummed when I ran out of Sanderson books, and am glad I've discovered Brent Weeks... I hope he keeps the Lightbringer series going strong for a while!

It's almost the same book

I'd like to mention that the ULTIMATE COOKERY COURSE and HOME COOKING books from Gordon Ramsay are almost the same book! The second book is in fact an adaptation for the US market.

This review is in fact NOT a review or an evaluation of the books. It's only showing the numerous but minor differences between them:
- the first book is the original book published for the UK market (august 2012), the other is an adpatation for the US (april 2013)
- their covers are slightly different but images, texts, page layout, recipes are EXACTLY identical. There is even a matching page to page
- the original uses metric measures (grams, millilitres, cm), the adaptation uses imperial measures (cups, ounces, pounds, inches). Both use tsp and tbsp for small quantities
- the original uses �Centigrade with gas level, the other �Fahrenheit: 200�C/Gas 6 becomes 400�F
- some ingredients are named/translated differently: double cream becomes heavy cream, caster sugar becomes sugar, spring onions become scallions, pak choi becomes bok choy, coriander becomes cilantro, kale becomes swiss chard, plain flour becomes all-purpose flour, fillet of beef becomes beef tenderloin, tenderstem broccoli becomes baby broccoli, chillies becomes chiles, cep mushrooms become porcini, demerara sugar becomes brown sugar, courgette becomes zucchini, cornflour becomes cornstarch, icing sugar becomes confectioner's sugar, bicarbonate of soda becomes baking soda, biscuits becomes cookies, pudding rice becomes short-grain white rice, etc.

If you ask me which version I prefer ? Not easy to say! Probably the original one with the exact original metric measures. But it's a matter of taste ...

Amazing

The recipes are delicious and Gordon Ramsay is a genius.The book goes perfectly with the show (which also happens to be on youtube). You can watch the recipes being made while he teaches handy tips I've never seen before in the kitchen. Everything is simple and usually takes about 20 minutes to cook.

Great Book (but a reprint of the 2012 UK book)

This is a great book, but be advised, that if you bought the 2012 Gordon Ramsay's Ultimate Cookery Course, which was published in the UK in 2012, this is exactly the same book, but with the measurements and temperatures converted (for the most part) for American readers,

I bought this for my Kindle anyway, because now I have a portable version on my phone, and I can decide what to make before I go home, and look at the ingredients when I go shopping. It's also more convenient to have the measurements in ounces and the temperatures in Fahrenheit instead of Centigrade, but there are a few omissions to the translation, so be on the alert if a temperature seems too low (if it's below 300, it's in centigrade).

I love all of Ramsay's cookbooks. The recipes are easy to make and each one tastes delicious. The presentation is well-designed and easy to read. His timing estimates are always right on the money. My only quibble with the books is that there is duplication of recipes from one book to another. That being said, this is the biggest and most complete, and offers a wide range of recipes and ingredients, I have made approximately a 20% of them at this point - all to rave reviews. Highly recommended if you don't already have the 2012 book.

Alan Gallop worked at Heathrow as a reporter with a national news agency between 1966 and 1978, covering every conceivable type of story for the international media. He was one of the team that launched the airport newspaper, Skyport. Passing crush depth...

I usually love Haynes' "workshop manuals" on historical vehicles, but they seriously dropped the ball on this one. As someone fascinated by submarine design and naval history, when I heard they were doing a book on the iconic Type VII U-boat, I was thrilled. My excitement turned to disappointment after quickly leafing through the book, and discovering that it contained very little of the in-depth technical details found in other Haynes titles. The book largely focuses on the history of German submarine design after World War I, a basic history of the Battle of the Atlantic, and what it was like to live and work aboard a U-boat. There is a single section, optimistically titled "Anatomy of the Type VII class," which consists mainly of a photographic walk-through of U-995 complemented by some very basic tech specs. The only diagrams in this section consist of a couple of basic overview plans which are freely available online.

My disappointment turned to irritation and ultimately frustration as I read through the book, noticing how many basic errors of fact, contradictory statements, humorous typos, and bizarre historical errors managed to find their way into the finished text. In this book, pictures of virtually every other type of World War II U-boat design are identified as Type VIIs, Donitz becomes Chancellor of Germany six months after it surrenders to the Allies, the Type IX boasts a 182-knot surface speed, and the Type VII is referred to as both a single-hull and double-hull design. "Vaterland" is translated as "Waterland," the Germans are said to have had a "Target Motion Analysis" mine at the beginning of the war, the red goggles worn by U-boat crew to help them adapt to nighttime conditions become "infrared night-vision goggles," the Type VIIA is described as having a single propeller, and reference is made to an "1812 Anglo-American War of Independence." The US Navy is depicted as being in a "fortunate position" after Pearl Harbor, the Type XIV supply boat is called a variant of the Type IXD, and a watertight door inside the boat is described as being more than 17 meters tall!

I'm giving this book two stars, simply because it seems well-intentioned, and there are some interesting wartime photographs contained within. If you're seriously interested in this type of submarine, try Robert C Stern's "Type VII U-boats," the Anatomy of the Ship book, or check out the wartime blueprints and technical data freely available on the U-boat Archive website (http://uboatarchive.net/). If you're looking for a Haynes submarine manual, Royal Navy Submarine: 1945 to 1973 ('A' class - HMS Alliance) (Owners' Workshop Manual) is vastly superior. This book should never have been published in this state.

If you are expecting a physical dissection of a U-boat like a car manual you will be disappointed

This is not so much a technical analysis of the U-boat as it is a history of their development and deployment. If you are expecting a physical dissection of a U-boat like a car manual you will be disappointed. However it does give some serious attention to the one surviving Type VII boat, which I've not seen anywhere else. It's a nice addition to the literature of the U-boat arm, and includes personal detail of leading skippers, bases and the history of boat construction at the various yards.

Absolutely amazing compilation of information and data on the ubiquitous Type VIIC Atlantic U-Boat. The HAYNES publishers have a real hit in this book! Despite its modest size, the scope of the book is impressive and it definitely belongs on everyone's 'U-boat reference shelf'. I found myself referring back to it frequently, despite having many other larger & more focused references on German submarine warfare in my library. Well worth getting a copy, not least because it includes a great number of beautiful photographic images of the surviving single example of the Type VIIC/41 left in existence as a museum boat (U-995, displayed at the German Naval Museum in Laboe)!

Fans of derivatives lore will like it

This is a glossy photo book issued ostensibly for the general public to learn about the Chicago exchange(s), giving as it does a basic history and explanation of the Chicago commodities markets. But it has the air of an in-house vanity piece by and for CME people. Nevertheless, since I like lots of classic photos and other imagery to go with my financial history, I'm well served here. The price was also amazing given the size and slickness of this book.

A must for control engineers

Excellent reference book for chemical engineers involved in process control design.

Where the author is most familiar is with general control concepts, e.g., ratio control, split-range control, cascade control. Where he is less successful is where controls are applied. Currently, I am involved in a process involving crystallizers.

An experienced crystallizer engineer with 40 years experience glanced at this section and cried, "Posh." Then, again, he is a bit skeptical. Looking at it myself, I found a few generalities but still managed to create a workable control scheme with the help of some reference information from an AIChE course run by Wayne Genck and Tim Nordahl (my skeptic).

In the crystallizer section, chapter 8.18, he defines seven variables and three equations allowing for four degrees of freedom. This is a concept key to this reference. The seven variables include: temperature and flow of the feed; temperature and flow of the cooling or heating medium; level of supersaturation (critical variable in crystallization); ratio of mother liquor recycled; and removal/dissolution rate of fine crystals. Fines must be removed or re-dissolved in the solvent: the goal is large, inclusion-free crystals. Four degrees of freedom means that four loops should be used to control these variables. Any more than that and the process is over-constrained with the result that the loops will interfere with each other.

By working through the background information and with the help of Shinskey's "Process Control Systems," I was able to use Liptak's handbook to develop what should be a robust control system.
This handbook includes sections on PLCs, DCS - and integration with other systems, programming, valve hardware, fieldbus, sizing control valves, etc.

Unlike other reference books, it is possible to buy Volume II without Volume I. Volume I seems to refer to instrument set-up.

I have a couple of other instrument handbooks but this looks to be superior to the others.

Absolutely the Very Best Process Control Reference for the Process Control Engineer - Now Updated and Expanded !!. This is the second volume of the Instrument Engineer's Handbook, and. as its title suggests, it deals with Process control and Optimization, covering everything from Control Hardware, Control Theory, Control Strategies, and the Control and Optimization of Specific Unit Operations.

The Chapters on Control Hardware cover in detail transmitters, controllers, control valves, regulators and other types of final control elements, PLCs, and other logic devices, human interfaces and displays, including the design of control rooms.

The Chapters on Control Theory and Control Strategies covers everything from control basics and PID controllers, to tuning methods, stability, process characteristics, process modeling and simulation, model-based control, genetic and other evolutionary algorithms, fuzzy logic programming, neural networks and other advance control strategies.

The Chapters on Control and Optimization of Unit Operations provide both in-depth of both the theory of operation and control, and practical implementation for the control of pumping, distillation, chemical reaction, heat transfer and many other.

While evaluating and reviewing such sophisticated topics about Process Control, this handbook also tries and succeeds to provide and reinforce the reader with the most useful tool for the Automation and Control Engineer: Common Sense. In order to emphasize the importance of Common Sense, the Author gives some practical recommendations that include the following ones:

- Before we can control a process, one must fully understand it.
- Being progressive is good, but being a guinea pig is not. Therefore is the wrong control strategy is implemented, the performance of even the most advanced digital hardware will be unacceptable.
- And Instrumentation, Automation, and Process Control Engineer or Technician is doing a good and better job by telling plant management what they need to know, and not what they like to hear.
- If an instrument is worth installing, it should also be worth calibrating and maintaining. No device can outperform the reference against it was calibrated.
- Trust your common sense not the sales literature. Independent performance evaluation based on the recommendation of international and national users associations should be done before installation, and not after it.

I am an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control. I have been working in the Process Industries for more than 16 years as an Automation, Instrumentation, Process Safety and Process Control Engineer. I consider this book to be the very best reference in the field for anyone and everyone working in these areas or in areas related with their Industrial applications. You will find this handbook useful, either if your work is related with the engineering, maintenance or operation of Process Control Systems.

If you are a beginner to Process Control, you may also want to consider "Process Dynamics, Modeling, and Control (Topics in Chemical Engineering)" by Babatunde A. Ogunnaike, which is an excelent introductory reference to Chemical Processes Dynamics and Control.

Another outstanding work by Bela Liptak!

The second volume of Bela Liptak's "Instrument Engineers' Handbook" series is another phenomenal piece of work. Written to help newly-minted engineers come up to speed with practical applications in industry, it is a masterpiece of technical content and outstanding readability. My review covers the third edition of this book which is not the latest edition, although from what I have seen of Liptak's references throughout the years subsequent editions just keep getting better.

My two-year Instrumentation students use this book as a primary reference for their studies in control algorithms and final control elements. The fact that my students (who are not being trained as engineers, but technicians) find this book of significant value to their learning is a testament to its writing quality. While some of the sections delve into mathematics well beyond my students' abilities (e.g. Differential equations, Laplace Transforms, Nyquist plots -- all subjects appropriate for readers at the engineering level), there is enough content within its 1500+ pages still accessible and relevant enough to their learning that I have used this as the primary text for my courses on control valves, PID, and process optimization.

One of the unique features of this volume is a chapter (number 8 in the third edition) found near the end of the book entitled "Process Control Systems." The subject of this chapter is the application of process control strategies to a varietry of common industrial processes (HVAC, boilers, chillers, compressors, heat exchangers, distillation columns, evaporators, pumps, chemical reactors, turbines, water treatment, etc.). This chapter alone would be worth the price of the book, with practical insight on the best strategies to apply to various processes, and why they work.

If I had anything negative to say about this book, it is that writing style betrays its collective authorship. All of the "Instrument Engineers' Handbook" volumes are collective works, with chapters written by different authors. Bela Liptak serves as the editor-in-chief in these volumes. As such, style and presentation varies a bit from chapter to chapter. This should not discourage anyone from buying the book, though. It is a must-have for any professional in the field of industrial instrumentation and automation.

Worth it's weight in gold

Someone gave me this book my first year of teaching. I have now taught music for 6 years, and have used this book every year. Each song is notated musically, and accompanied by the game and a short introduction as to the origins. I also teach Kindermusik, and can see that many of our activities must have been taken right out of this book. I HIGHLY recommend this book, and although I wish you great luck in finding it for under $100, or at the library, you wont be disappointed if you spend the money.

This book has a wide variety of different musical games, all of which are singing and movement games. Perfect for the Kodaly educator. Many of the games can be found in more readily available and inexpensive resources, however, so try to get titles before you buy.

About the Author

Pushpak Bhattacharyya is Vijay and Sita Vashee chair professor of computer science and engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, where he has been teaching and researching for the last 25 years. He was educated at IIT Kharagpur (B.Tech), IIT Kanpur (M.Tech), and IIT Bombay (Ph.D). While earning his Ph.D, he was visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Subsequently, he has been visiting professor at Stanford University and University of Grenoble, and distinguished lecturer at the University of Houston. Dr. Bhattacharyya’s research interests include natural language processing, machine learning, machine translation, information extraction, sentiment analysis, and cross-lingual search, in which he has published extensively. Currently, he is associate editor of ACM Transactions on Asian Language Information Processing and vice president-elect of Association of Computational Linguistics (ACL).
