Love this book

I first saw this book at my local library. I liked sooo many patterns in the book that I bought it. The best thing about this book is that the author shows the pattern as a diagram (picture) as well as writing it out. I find it hard to follow just written instructions. I really like when there is also a diagram. Many of these patterns you can use simply as an edge for an afghan. But I enjoy the fact you can use numerous ones as a potential scarf. Just have to add a row, or two to make it a bit wider. So many different styles! Really enjoy this book.

Excellent resource!

Excellent!!! Each stitch is given with a photo of a sample swatch, a crochet diagram and written stitch instructions. I'm a beginner and I find the instructions easy to follow. I've experimented with several of the more complex patterns and have had no problem creating a border on a swatch of my own. If you dream of creating your own patterns, or want to put a nice finish on an item, this is a great resource! Unlike the Internet and constantly evolving media, a book lasts a life time, needs no batteries and never gives you a "404" error ;) This book is like a treasure chest, filled with gems for creating beautiful things.

Crochet Borders Book

I was thrilled to see that the photos in this book were superior to those that were in Linda P. Schapper's Crochet Stitch book. Nice variety for all skill levels. I enjoy having patterns that have the visual picture as well as a diagram to support the written instructions. I have been crocheting since the 60's and have a nice collection of edging books already, but I must say this one is very nicely put together.

Agile Done Right!!!!

I was excited to see that Mr. Ambler was working on Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD) and was looking forward to this book. One of the biggest challenges I have is that most of the successful agile teams I interact with are isolated small teams using Scrum out of the box. It is working on the projects that have small teams with small scope, usually building one application in isolation. They don't have to be concerned with enterprise level integration.

The small successful teams I have seen also do no architecture. Although the end result is exactly what you do not want for high modifiability, they simply get it live. Usually a little buggy and slow, but they make it live nevertheless.

That is not true of all the projects I interact with. There are some large enterprise wide Scrum initiatives. The successful ones brought in an external Scrum coach to train them. Because of the complexity of the project they were also forced to do architecture and design. They ended up back at more of an iterative process. By the time they were done modifying the Scrum process, beside some Scrum names, they were much closer to the Unified Process than Scrum.

Until now my primary resource for information, that I also consider good information, implementing agile practices at an enterprise level has been Scaled Agile Framework. It is completely covered in the book Agile Software Requirements: Lean Requirements Practices for Teams, Programs, and the Enterprise. The Scaled Agile Framework is great,but I am glad to have this second resource!!! The attempts to sell Scrum of Scrums for dealing with enterprise level concerns has failed miserably.

It has been a wild ride. When it was all about UP, RUP, EUP, PLE, and Waterfall I was always in a battle to trim back the process ceremony in order avoid waste being template zombies. Then the Agile Age of Aquarius took over and I couldn't get anyone to give any thought to anything before riding off into cowboy coding bliss. The majority of the projects went from tons of worthless documents to tons of worthless code!!!!

After spending a lot of time battling the Agile Age of Aquarius coding cowboys I am so thankful some of the leaders in the industry, like the authors of this book, are starting to swing the pendulum back the other way. I just wish people would get that it's about tailoring to meet the needs of a project with the resources available. One shoe size doesn't fit everyone.

The book goes into great detail explaining the need for DAD and break it down into digestible parts. The book has 7 parts. I have listed them below with the chapters in each.

DAD is a hybrid of agile methods including Scrum, XP, Agile Modeling, Lean, Agile Data, and the Unified Process. It does what so many successful Agile projects are doing today that are larger in size. It uses what works, when its needed, and leaves the Agile Zealot Elitist Attitude behind. It is so refreshing to read an Agile book without the attitude.

DAD recognizes Scrum's shortcomings as primarily focused on management and brings back architecture and includes agile development practices that are easily excused from most Scrum projects.

DAD includes phases. It includes a project initiation and release activities that are missing from Scrum. DAD has three phases Inception, Construction, and Transition.

DAD also comes in two flavors, basic and advanced. The primary difference is that advanced is for more experienced teams that can take advantage of lean strategies which eliminates the iterations and the work item stack in favor of the work item pool. The book primarily focuses on the basic DAD process.

The only complaint I have about the book is that the diagrams showing the Disciplined Agile Delivery life cycle - Basic, and the Disciplined Agile Delivery life cycle - Advanced should have been full page diagrams. They are too small to read in the book. It is not really a big deal since they are available on the web.

The book is really well written. It is very detailed and also entertaining making very easy to read. Throughout the book "Lessons from the Trenches" sidebars bring real world experience to the topics being covered.

The authors also include a case study for each of the phases they cover based on a project that builds a point of sale system. This gives the reader the opportunity to see the artifact creating activities in action.

All in all I found the book to be an excellent resource for the agilist looking to move beyond small develop teams. It is an absolute must read for enterprise architects and other senior management working in the IT shop.

Many "agile" buzzwords describing a 30 year old process

Ultimately, when you strip the text of the agile terminology, what you get is an anecdotal description of a standard iterative approach, much better delivered in books like Walker Royce's "Software Project Management - A Unified framework". It reiterates what many software professionals already know: "Iterative" done right is agile. Worse, it brings no concrete metrics to back any of the claims and recommendations. The book addresses another well known fact: Traditional agile (usually meaning Scrum) does not scale up well for Enterprise IT projects requiring large project teams and delivering complex solutions.
The only redeeming value I found in the book is that it concentrates many well known engineering and Project Management best practices, but then again, books like Capers Jones's "Software Engineering Best Practices" do it better and back their findings with facts from well researched studies.

About the Author
Walter D. Ward (Ph.D., UCLA) is an assistant professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has published several scholarly articles on the Roman Near East, early Christianity, and trade in the Red Sea, and he is putting the finishing touches on his first book manuscript, Inventing the pre-Islamic Saracen "Other": Monastic and Saracen Identity Formation in the Sinai Peninsula from Constantine to Mohammad.
Denis Gainty (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania) is a professor of history at Georgia State University. He is the author of several pieces on Tokugawa and Meiji social history, including a book chapter on the inclusion of martial arts in the modern Japanese public school curriculum. He is currently writing his first book, Martialing the National Body.

This is a college text book that my niece had to have for a college course. This was not going to be something she read for fun or will probably recommend to her friends. It is written well enough to be easy to read and not be confusing. I am sure most people will think a required text is going to be just OK since they are always overpriced and under used.

About the Author

Teodora-Liliana Radulescu received her PhD in 2005 from Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania,�with a thesis on nonlinear analysis, and�she is currently a professor of mathematics at the "Fratii Buzesti" National College in Craiova, Romania. She is a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Romanian Mathematical Society. She is also a reviewer for Mathematical Reviews and Zentralblatt fur Mathematik.

Vicentiu Radulescu received both his PhD and the Habilitation at the Universit� Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris 6), and he�is currently�a professor of mathematics at the University of Craiova, Romania and a senior researcher at the Institute of Mathematics "Simion Stoilow" of the Romanian Academy in Bucharest, Romania.�He has authored 9 books and over 100 articles.

Titu Andreescu is an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Texas at Dallas. He is also firmly involved in mathematics contests and Olympiads, being the Director of AMC (as appointed by the Mathematical Association of America), Director of MOP, Head Coach of the USA IMO Team and Chairman of the USAMO. He has also authored a large number of books on the topic of problem solving and Olympiad-style mathematics.

A really great book

Around 2000 I had thought that a Real Analysis book should be written in which the various ideas, methods and results could be demonstrated using problems from mathematical competitions. My rationale was that there are many books on real analysis, each with its own characteristics, strengths and weaknesses but, at the end, all of them being very traditional in the core, presenting the material in the same dry way. Unfortunately, soon I stopped thinking about it. That is, until around 2010 when I discovered that a book, as I imagined it, had been published. Obviously, I had missed the opportunity to write such a book first. But I am not sure, even if I had done it, that the result would have been as good as this.

Indeed, I really like this book. It is a beautiful companion to any standard real analysis text. It will make studying more enjoyable and interesting. And it is not only for those who are learning the topic. Students who know it will also benefit as they can study problems they have not encountered in the traditional curriculum. However, the book cannot be used as a standalone text. Due to the problems from the mathematical competitions and from various professional journals which are used throughout the book and which consume the largest part of the book, the main body of real analysis is presented briefly. At the same time, traditional examples, constructions, etc. which are common to standard texts are omitted. Another issue that potential readers should be aware of is the following: Although the title of the book is Real Analysis, there is no measure theory and no Lebesgue integration in the book. The book goes as far as Riemann integration only. I do not believe that this is a serious flaw but readers who will use it while they are studying these topics will not have the opportunity to study related problems. For the remaining topics there is virtually a corresponding problem for each and every idea and concept.

The authors have place considerable effort and work to make this book as good as possible. So, overall, I strongly recommend this book. I believe it should find its way in every serious mathematician's library.

A good introduction.

"The Elements of Reasoning" offers a good introduction to using logic as a basis for making arguments. If you want to improve your skills of debate, or familiarize yourself with Aristotlian rules of rhetoric, this is the book for you. I read it and enjoyed it, although much of it was familiar and a bit obvious. I think even an observant viewer of Sunday morning political shows will be familar with the techniques covered -- inventions, conjectures, definitions, as well as the age old structures of syllogisms and enthymemes. If you are already familiar with such things, no need to read this book.

A must-read for effective writers

In one of the better courses I ever took in college, taught by Eberly, this text provided a solid foundation for understanding the nature of arguments, and how to pose them effectively in public discourses. Eberly is a master at encouraging stimulating conversation in the classroom, and her revisions to Corbett's elite style will cause relief for the student reader. Forming the perfect argument, especially when it is designed for the proto-public space, is a necessary skill, and this text will provide the user with ample guidance in persuasive reasoning.

Antidote to a feeling of futility

A lot of people today are suffering from "well-informed futility" syndrome. They understand there are big problems in the world but feel helpless to make a dent. This book is an antidote. It gives realistic but inspiring examples of people who have made a difference.

One thing I really liked and think is very important is that it makes it clear a lot of good is done by ordinary people. You don't need to be Nelson Mandela. And, even the great ones rely on a lot of support from others.

Also, progress often comes unexpectedly -- but after a lot of preparatory work.

So, it is important for each of us to do what we can. This book is a good inspiration to do so.
