A Maestro at Work
By CC Thomas
Sometimes, too rarely, you find a book that just takes your breath away. One that makes all other books seem as if they aren't books at all, but practice runs. Ellen Foster was that kind of book for me.

Ellen Foster is about a young girl in an abusive home. Her mother overdoses, her alcoholic father alternately takes advantage of her or neglects her completely and she soon becomes a throw-away, wandering from one uncaring relative to another.

This story is one that hit me like a load of concrete. Told in the young main character's point of view, it was startlingly realistic and painful and haunting. There was something so uncomfortable about reading the story that I often had to put the book aside to wipe my tears away. Watching Ellen's life unfold is like watching a gruesome car accident--you can't look away no matter how bad it is. You can't stop reading although you know the next paragraph will bring you certain heartbreak. And yet, for all that, it is still a story of hope.

This is a book you don't read so much as experience. In my opinion, Gibbons is one of the top 3 female writers alive today (the others being Jan Karon and Melinda Haynes). All of her books have moved me so deeply but this one was my favorite, if such a word can be applied to this experience. Her prose is so beautiful that it is almost poetic. She takes words and makes them do things I've never seen from other authors. This story is told from the point of view of the young Ellen so it is hard to follow and read but that makes the story so much more powerful and painful.
If you've never
read Kaye Gibbons before, treat yourself to a concert performed by a maestro.

Short novel with a strong voice
By Pink Amy
Eleven-year-old Ellen has been abused, neglected, orphaned and passed through her family, nobody really wanting her. She dreams of a better life, with a mother who showers her with love.

As narrator of this short novel, her precocious voice is unique, strong and believable. Ellen is a multidimensional character, at times wiser than her years, while she also shows a pre-teen mischievous streak. Kaye Gibbons' clear, concise and writing is all show, will little tell. My only criticism is the lack of quotation marks were at times confusing. While I enjoyed the story and loved Ellen, I didn't love the novel. The pacing was average, I wasn't pulled to read 'just one more chapter'.

ELLEN FOSTER is an above average story worth reading, though not compelling enough to put on my reread list.

Catharsis
By Hannah Fowler
While others reading Ellen Foster have given negative reviews because it was depressing, for me it was like a breath of fresh air! I am a 4th grade teacher working in a rural school where 80% of our children come for impoverished homes. I know real children who remind me of Ellen, but not all are as resilient. Ellen had a mind of her own and she used it to make a better life for herself. Her honesty and forthrightness came across rather crudely at times. However, it was because she had the ability to see the big picture and be honest with herself and others that she survived. This remarkable authenticity was in contrast to her cousin and aunt. Their pathetic, twisted lives hurt Ellen, even as they tried to sugar-coat their world! I could not put this book down. Too many children in America live in poverty. They need resources in order to make it out.
