Donor Agencies are so smart after all!

Those dealing with knowledge management in donor agencies should read this book and keep it on their bookshelves. Many others in donor agencies, their government oversight bodies, and their client organizations will find it interesting. The book covers the bilateral donor agencies of the UK, Sweden and Japan, and the World Bank. It assesses the discussions of knowledge in selected policy documents of those agencies, their efforts to improve internal knowledge, their evaluation practices, their ICT-based knowledge management systems, etc. I have been involved in some of the efforts the describe, and their selection seems reasonable. The coverage is primarily focused on the 1990's, and the late 1990's were a time of rapid change in their knowledge systems. King and McGrath have read a great deal, and have interviewed a very large number of people within the agencies they study. Their work has both the advantages and disadvantages of their being academics outside of the organizations they study. They note differences among the bilateral donor agencies, marking the contingency of knowledge processes: thus Japanese aid is influenced by its experience as a recipient of foreign aid as well as a long-time donor, and by the concept of wakon yosai (Japanese spirit, Western technology) which helped guide technology transfer in Japan since the Meiji period; Sweden has maintained more interest in higher education and in science and technology than other donors. They conclude that "the knowledge revolution in agencies remains largely a series of uncoordinated projects that are being implemented without any real overall vision or strategy." (As perhaps it should be.) They do not answer the critical question as to whether the costs of the efforts to improve knowledge systems in development assistance have been justified by improvement of the efficiency or effectiveness of such assistance, but I suspect that question is unanswerable. King and McGrath do illuminate what has been happening, summarizing a great deal of information, and I found the book stimulating. [...]

A monumental step in moving forward

This was an informative book. Though we didn't heed everything, it gave us a better foundation for approaching our young child and help. It is perplexing when a young child naturally has anxiety. When their environment is secure, fun, loving, patient, and finding the source of stress or trouble leaves you baffled, what do you do, when you don't understand? I would have primarily guessed anxiety was self imposed stressors that become unbearable, or a reaction to traumatizing situations. This book was very helpful explaining the worried mind and steps to reduce propensity for anxiousness.

Well written, Extraordinarily Helpful!

I must add my praise for this book. I discovered it when I was desperately looking for answers as to how to deal with my son's angst. He was in 2nd grade then. And we knew he was a worrier all along but he didn't fit the many diagnoses out there - and we wre just trying to cope on our own. As I turned page after page, I alternated from feelings of, "that's him!" to " oh, that's not him!" -- both feelings offered relief and a belief that we could all get through this and we could help him... And that there were people out there who could understand what we were going through. After reading it, I first sought out Dr. Chansky and then found a behavioral program in sync with her outlook at Temple University's Child & Adolescent Anxiety Center in Philadelphia. Ten years later, we still all put into practice the coping tools. I don't have anxiety but we came to see a milder form in our other child and saw it in our family as well. I am so grateful to this book for setting us on the path first to understanding and then managing anxiety.

When my wife picked up this book, it was to assist us in understanding our daughter's obvious anxiety and the symptoms thereof. Not only did this book open our eyes to practices and helpful habits to teach our child, it opened my eyes to my own anxieties and what may have caused them since childhood. Extremely pricey

Unless you get lucky like I did for a used version. Places around the net wanted up to 200 dollars for this tome. It is written reasonably well and interesting if you believe in that hollow earth stuff. But no way in hell was it worth 200 bucks and people on amazon and other sites who were asking for 200 or so dollars ought to be tossed into jail.

In this one, Wilson writes definitively, math/scientifically, and with sincerity of purpose. Don't get confused by the word 'theory.' There's as much math in here as Born and Wolf's P of O. The only diffenrence is Wilson's is much more algebra-based. The mathematics (i.e. isomorphs) is 'taught', without breaking the flow, and is not assumed that you know the stuff already--- or can find it somewhere else. This book stands out because there is more science in here than names of scientists, and his references are for real. I would also say it was unique because books with titles like 'Molecular Vibrations' are usually skipped over for titles like 'mechanics' or 'quantum theory.' Spectroscopy was a major advancement in science, and it is good to see it skillfully treated with enlightening clarity.

This is the original work by E.B.Wilson where the G and F matrix formalism is presented. The G matrix, related to kinetic vibrational energy is built uppon the elements of the B matrix defined from "internal coordinates". Many quantum chemistry software packages use this exact methodology to build normal coordinates. For those working on Quantum Chem Molecular Orbital calculations, this book is a must.

A New Way to View, Assess, and Correct Movement

This is one of the best books on movement I've had the opportunity to read. In many ways, it is a total game changer. The past 500 years of our understanding of anatomy and movement have come from studying dead people. What can a dead body teach of about how we move? No much. To understand how our anatomy truly functions, we must study the living, breathing, moving body. Gary Ward explains this in wonderful detail. I can't wait to take his course once it comes to the states. I know it will evolve my practice into a new realm. If you are a movement professional, this is a must read.

What the Foot has helped me immensely to more specifically feel the movement patterns in my own body, and to make shifts in my focus as a move in ways that result is smoother and more healthy movement. It's an expensive book which I bought because another movement specialist and body worker whom I think highly of strongly recommended it. I read this book carefully and have definitely gotten my moneys worth in the improvements I feel in my own body, and in the greater understanding I have of my clients' bodies. The book has fully inspired me to attend Gary Ward's classes in the USA in the next year. I can't wait!

I highly recommend this book for health professionals who support others in moving comfortably, gracefully and efficiently. I expect it would be overwhelming for readers without a strong background in anatomy.

A must read for healthcare providers

This book looks at body mechanics and movement the way it should be looked at. I cannot disagree with anything he says here, and his point of view should be read by all who treat people for chronic pain related issues. Our current culture of well educated health care providers who just get it wrong because they learned it wrong needs to change. Every physician should ask themselves "If we are so good at what we do, why are results so uneven".

This guy has a large part of the puzzle most healthcare providers need to understand
