The natural way to combat anxiety

John Franz, the author, has taken on relieving anxiety not by over the counter prescription drugs but by many natural remedies, habits and he shows us some tips we can use. He says right off that we can't cure it but we can control this natural reaction to stress.There are actually a lot of solutions but it's up to us to find which work best for us. As the subtitle of the book suggests, there are 5 little known ways to naturally fight this pretty prevalent malady which is increasing due to our lifestyle. He includes everything from herbal tea to essential oils to body butters plus some natural habits we can stack like being grateful, concentrating on one thing at a time to getting enough sleep.

A very Good material to help Anxiety

This book deserves five stars (meaning, I love it.)

Well, this book,

- is practical

- shows some methods which I have tried already

- opens up a new world which might have been totally new to many till now

I wouldn't have gone for a book on anxiety claiming natural fighting agents unless I got a hint from the cover.
Some of the methods have proved widely to be very safe and yielding

Ogosh... fantastic recipes and tools and techniques to relieve anxiety and related excess stress, depression, and more...

Great quick yet powerful read that helped me better understand the connections between depression, stress and anxiety and a bunch of terrific, all natural, ways to deal with it. The symptoms of excess anxiety are horrible, decreased immune function and related sickness, more stress, mood swings, an interrupted sleep cycle, and even paranoia, and the natural methods are really useful lifestyle choices. I'm definitely going to try essential oil blends for anxiety and make some of the recipes (for sure the mint and lavender cold iced tea which sounded Divine). I knew hot baths with Epsom salts could be deeply healing, the Ultra Simple Diet by Mark Hyman, M.D. (which I bought here on Amazon) recommends that for each night on his cleanse/diet, but I didn't realize I could make homemade all-natural bath salts and body butter to relieve excess stress and anxiety. Going to keep this book on my Kindle phone app for the recipes, such as the bergamot, lavender, and wild orange bath salt one (love Earl Grey tea so wild to try bergamot in one of the body butter or bath salts recipes from this book). The book also has herbal foot bath recipes. But don't think the book is all about stuff that you have to buy/make to relieve anxiety, the book includes info on meditation and finding humor as ways to control stress and anxiety. I like that the book is short yet info-packed. I'll be re-reading this (and trying a bunch of the recipes and techniques). Happy anxiety relief~*

Worth taking a look to see another MVVM tidbit

MVVM in WPF has been a slippery program design area for five years now and few sources have touched on it well. The early books on it handled it badly or were never even allowed into print( MVVM Unleashed ). I have four books on this subject and only one ( Designing Silverlight Business Applications ) gives this subject the proper introduction that it should have and even here it is a lot of work to put together the real concept. The problem is that none of these authors knows how to teach a subject properly. MVVM is a complex subject and it needs to be introduced by concept and then various approached should be compared. Finally, various software examples should be shown to the reader so that he has firm constructs to compare back to the initial introduction. As far as I know, no one knows how to teach software design any longer.

Although it is instructive to see the examples here, this book should only be used to increase the reader's understanding of MVVM design. The author gives a one page introduction to his design approach and launches directly into the code without any real explanation. The download of the code page doesn't exist.

In his favor, the code in the book is worth studying and his use of locators is worth a look. Since MVVM examples are hard to come by, The book is worth the three stars I gave it. MVVM design is still somewhat of a mystery and any working code is worth taking a look at unless the price is far too high.

A Fantastic Coffee Table Book, Even for Non-Architecture Fans.

I enjoy Legos a lot. Even as an adult nearing middle age, I still buy the occasional set and put them together. One series I've never gotten into though is the Architecture line. They're too small for my taste and I've never found them to look too much like the actual buildings they are modeled after. They just come off cheesy to me, especially the ones with "water." However I love coffee table books and especially design oriented ones, so I decided to give this one a try.

I have to say, I am really glad I picked this up. Normally my reviews aren't this gushing, but I loved everything about it. The book is high quality in terms of both substance and style. It comes in an extremely durable slipcover with glossy matte finish and Lego artwork. The cover of the book is an inversion of the slipcover design, as it is shadows/silhouettes of the Legos compared to artsy photos on the box. I have to admit, this is the best slipcover for an item I've seen outside the ones Nippon Ichi makes for its premium edition videos. Color me impressed.

The book itself is equally awesome. Not only do each of the twenty-two offerings in the Lego Architecture line get their own section, each one has a plethora of interesting information and wonderful photos taken of them. Take Big Ben, which is pretty much my standard for why I don't think the Lego Architecture line is very good. You get tons of pictures of the complete piece, each from different angles, along with footnoted and tidbits about the design process. You also get photos of the real structure the Lego set was patterned after. There is a side by side (well page by page) comparison of the real thing with the Lego version, and also a history of the building and its chief designer(s). So not only do you learn a lot about what went into the Lego version, but you also walk away with having learning something about the real historical piece. I loved that! each entry in this visual guide follows the same format and it really is a joy to read.

Besides the sections on the specific Lego sets, you also get a timeline for the series, profiles of the Lego staff that designed these sets, information on the creative process and a look at the different bricks used in all of the sets.

Although I probably won't buy any of the Architecture sets showcased in this collection, I really did learn a lot from this book and it was as fun to read as it was to look at. I walked away with some more respect for the Architecture line and I'm sure I will flip through this again from time to time.

Beautiful

For the true Lego Maniac, this book is incredible. It is essentially a huge beautifully photographed catalog of the Lego Architecture series. Just about every model available in the series is included in the book.

On a pure coffee table picture book standpoint, this is a nice book. The paper is heavy weight. In DK style, the photographs of the full sized architecture are gorgeous. First opening of this book is awe inspiring, the book is held in a thick heavy cardboard slipcase. The book is bound in cardboard with glossy paper glued over the cardboard. The binding is tight and allows the book to be laid flat.

There is a bit of background text about the creative process and profiles of the artists that designed these models. The core of the book is each model. The formula is the same for each of the 22 models. A close up picture two page spread of the model. On the next page the design artist's perspective on what was critical with the building. The facing page is a picture of the whole model. The next page pair is a breakdown of the construction with key elements called out. And the last pair of pages DK shines the most, beautiful pictures of the original building and some text describing the building.

As a catalog and casual coffee table book, this is outstanding. If I were in the market for one of these kits, this would be the best place in the world to make that purchase decision.

As a Lego Maniac that has built a few of these kits, the information in this book isn't much more than what is included in the Lego kit box. If you already own a number of these kits, this book is pretty but redundant.

Because Lego Architecture kits are priced at a huge premium over standard Lego kits, this book is a good choice as a catalog. As a dream book, it also succeeds. This is probably not the book for somebody that has collected a number of the Architecture kits.

The condition of what I got is bad. It seems like what I got is not brand new, but used one.
But the contents of this book is really great, my boy like it, he enjoy Legos a lot.

Worthless Slang

The reader should be warned that this book is a historical, religiously-sanctioned look at circumcision from a time when we knew MUCH LESS than we do now. In spite of the book's title, there are no "moral and physical reasons" for circumcision because the very notion contains flawed reasoning. ANY surgery that violates individual rights cannot be tolerated in the 21st century, no matter what the "reason". This is especially true when we consider the mutilation of the perfectly healthy genitalia of a newborn baby, regardless of sex.

Overall, this is a highly disturbing and incredibly biased book, and I question its publication as an ebook on Amazon's Kindle Store without a thorough disclaimer.

I do not recommend that anyone read this book, and would instead suggest: "Circumcision, The Hidden Trauma" by Ronald Goldman or "Marked in Your Flesh" by Leonard B. Glick.

Growing Together as a Couple by Brian and Cheryl Brodersen is a book about ways to make your marriage a lasting one. The tips they give you are easy to follow and remember. The chapters are divided into E Principles. Two of them are Eliminate Unhealthy Expectations and Endure By Standing Together in Faith.

In Eliminate Unhealthy Expectations you will learn that no one is alike and that is a good thing. Imagine how boring it would be if your marriage was only filled with your ideas. I liked how the authors used their marriage experiences as well as others in sharing ways to change your expectations. The healthy expectations listed and talked about were very helpful.

In the Endure By Standing Together in Faith chapter they give great advice on treasuring your relationship as a gift not an obligation. They show how, apart from Jesus, your marriage is the most intimate and deepest relationship you should have. I also liked how they said to be sure to self examine and not just think about your spouse while reading this book!

This book was not preachy and was very informative and helpful. Each chapter is written in a loving and open way and definitely not condemning or legalistic in nature. Overall a great book on growing together in your marriage.

Growing Together As a Couple is an excellent Book to use in Bible Study Group

We have a Couple Home Bible Study Group that meets at our home every Sunday afternoon and we have been using this book. We read a chapter a week with our spouse and on Sunday afternoon we do study questions together as a group with the couples. I can say for myself that a few of the chapter's God has convicted me of things that I was doing and how I treated my spouse was not honoring to my husband or God. Great book

About the Author
Graham Salisbury’s family has lived in the Hawaiian Islands since the early 1800s. He grew up on Oahu and Hawaii and graduated from California State University. He received an MFA from Vermont College of Norwich University, where he was a member of the founding faculty of the MFA program in writing for children. He lives with his family in Portland, Oregon.
   Graham Salisbury’s books have won many prizes. Blue Skin of the Sea won the Bank Street Child Study Association Children’s Book Award; Under the Blood-Red Sun won the Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction, the Oregon Book Award, Hawaii’s Nene Award, and the California Young Reader Medal; Shark Bait won the Oregon Book Award and a Parents’ Choice Silver Honor; Lord of the Deep won the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award. He has also written the Calvin Coconut series for younger readers.

Traditions in Architecture: Africa, America, Asia, and Oceania is the first wide-ranging, one-volume study to examine the architectural achievements of diverse cultures outside the Euroamerican tradition. In contrast with traditional chronological surveys of architectural history, this volume is arranged thematically to show the basic commonalties of all human communities. In order to provide a basic understanding of the cultural heritage defining these diverse groups, both vernacular and monumental works are discussed. The book is divided into five major sections, each of which addresses specific topics fundamental to all societies. The authors discuss these topics in terms of particular architectural solutions, comparing and contrasting geographically separated buildings and construction traditions. For example, the issue of architectural meaning is studied through symbolic gardens in China, verbal ornament in the Islamic world, and the wall paintings of Ndebele women of southeast Africa. Beginning with an investigation into the ways in which the continuity of traditional forms is maintained, the authors then explore practical issues such as housing and food structures, climate and ecology, building materials, and architectural forms and methods. Architectural goals and purposes, which determine what is built, vary from culture to culture and are given special attention. Planning and design-ways in which space is used in patterns of organization-range from urban plans to landscaped settings. The authors conclude with an examination of cultural values, investigating the way in which architecture interacts with social relations, traditional theories, decision-making, and the economics of building. The book is enhanced by over 200 photographs, maps, and charts, as well as a glossary and full bibliography. This unique study will enlighten students and open new avenues of research for scholars.

Excellent Study of non-western architecture

My familiarity with architectural studies stems from 3 years as a graduate student. Most architectural studies are "biased" to western history and organized in chronological order. Traditions in Architecture takes a fresh approach by focusing on a rich source of architectural precedence in the early America, Asia, Africa and the far east. The organization is thematic, rather than chronological covering such diverse topics as fixed versus mobile living spaces, vernacular materials, construction methods, sacred spaces, and so much more.

The only reason that I did not give the work 5 stars is that many of the pictures (all black and white) lacked clarity. I do not know whether this was due to poor originals or poor reproduction; however, the details often are necessary to understand the full impact of the works.

As UCLA professors, Crouch and Johnson give much credit to their students' work and input. This appears to be a work that has been a culmination of years of study with much independent input. I highly recommend it as a "first" to take this approach and to cover such a wide breadth of topics in one volume.

A fresh look at non-western traditions

Although the book was written as a textbook for a course in non-western traditions in architectural history, it may be of considerable interest to anyone traveling to parts of Asia, Africa and Oceania. The authors' approach is largely descriptive, and the illustrations both plentiful and very good, so one may be a little impatient that the verbal descriptions rarely provide much information that is not apparent from the photos and drawings; but this is, after all, a textbook, and if you will grant that allowance, it is well-worth your time.
     The architectural traditions covered are contemporary as well as ancient, grand as well as domestic and, throughout, the authors treat the sacred and symbolic traditions of the culture, insofar as they are known or may be inferred, as they bear on the built environment. The book is organized thematically, rather than chronologically or geographically. Among the themes: moveable, stationary and underground dwellings; the impact of colonialism on native structures; the transfer of traditional architectural knowledge; and spatial organization, from courtyards to the axial alignments of cities. The focus is on three categories of structures: professionally designed and built monuments, houses erected by traditional building tradesmen, and structures that ordinary people build for their own use. The overarching theme is that architecture expresses cultural values as well as technology, and it illustrates that theme with an exceptionally wide range of examples.
     In the single area of the book where I have a fairly solid background, the Anasazi/Puebloan architecture of the Southwest, the scholarship is current and sound. Interesting and highly informative.
