Excellent Study of non-western architecture

My familiarity with architectural studies stems from 3 years as a graduate student. Most architectural studies are "biased" to western history and organized in chronological order. Traditions in Architecture takes a fresh approach by focusing on a rich source of architectural precedence in the early America, Asia, Africa and the far east. The organization is thematic, rather than chronological covering such diverse topics as fixed versus mobile living spaces, vernacular materials, construction methods, sacred spaces, and so much more.

The only reason that I did not give the work 5 stars is that many of the pictures (all black and white) lacked clarity. I do not know whether this was due to poor originals or poor reproduction; however, the details often are necessary to understand the full impact of the works.

As UCLA professors, Crouch and Johnson give much credit to their students' work and input. This appears to be a work that has been a culmination of years of study with much independent input. I highly recommend it as a "first" to take this approach and to cover such a wide breadth of topics in one volume.

A fresh look at non-western traditions

Although the book was written as a textbook for a course in non-western traditions in architectural history, it may be of considerable interest to anyone traveling to parts of Asia, Africa and Oceania. The authors' approach is largely descriptive, and the illustrations both plentiful and very good, so one may be a little impatient that the verbal descriptions rarely provide much information that is not apparent from the photos and drawings; but this is, after all, a textbook, and if you will grant that allowance, it is well-worth your time.
     The architectural traditions covered are contemporary as well as ancient, grand as well as domestic and, throughout, the authors treat the sacred and symbolic traditions of the culture, insofar as they are known or may be inferred, as they bear on the built environment. The book is organized thematically, rather than chronologically or geographically. Among the themes: moveable, stationary and underground dwellings; the impact of colonialism on native structures; the transfer of traditional architectural knowledge; and spatial organization, from courtyards to the axial alignments of cities. The focus is on three categories of structures: professionally designed and built monuments, houses erected by traditional building tradesmen, and structures that ordinary people build for their own use. The overarching theme is that architecture expresses cultural values as well as technology, and it illustrates that theme with an exceptionally wide range of examples.
     In the single area of the book where I have a fairly solid background, the Anasazi/Puebloan architecture of the Southwest, the scholarship is current and sound. Interesting and highly informative.

Number Theory in the Wright Style

A smooth and entertaining read. It's engaging, entertaining and definitely not lacking any of the humor it promises. If you're looking for a book with vital footnotes and just the right mix of theorems and tall tales, then I definitely recommend this book. Oh, and you learn about number theory.

Funnest. math. book. ever.

I can't think of any math book that is more fun to read than this one. In fact, I'm having trouble thinking of a book that's this fun to read, period. I read it with a big grin on my face and genuinely laughed out loud at times.

But it's not just for laffs: there's a lot of genuine mathematics in this book. Wright doesn't go deep into any particular topic, but at the level he does attempt to explain things, he succeeds beautifully. For example, this book contains the clearest, most accessible explanation of what the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture (one of the famous Millennium Problems) is that I've seen.

I remember years ago reading a blurb regarding Dave Barry: "Mr. Barry is the funniest man in America and we should encourage him." I want to say something similar: Tom Wright is the funniest man in mathematics and we should encourage him. Buy this book, read it, and hope he writes more.

Telerehabilitation, as a subset of telehealth, is the use of telecommunications to deliver rehabilitation services at a distance and can bridge the gaps created by personnel shortages that exist in underserved and remote areas, as well as serve persons in urban settings who cannot easily leave their homes or offices to seek care. Given the mobile nature of our society, telerehabilitation can enable continuity of care while persons travel for work, vacation and/or education.

While the technical capacities to conduct telerehabilitation have surged ahead in the past 10 years, there has been slower, yet ongoing progress in the development of the policies (e.g., legislation; state licensure; reimbursement) that will be required to actualize widespread telepractice service delivery.

Kumar and Cohn have provided an excellent resource to practitioners who are planning and/or delivering a range of telerehabilitation services. Increasingly, healthcare is being transformed through technology and new service delivery models are evolving. In their book, Telerehabilitation, the authors provide insight from a range of disciplines -- such as speech-language pathology, audiology, & occupational therapy -- that are now embracing video conferencing and distance technology as tools in the provision of habilitation and rehabilitation services. This book is thorough, well-researched and illustrated, and would be an invaluable resource for any practitioner who is providing or contemplating the provision of telepractice or telerehabilitation services.

Excelente libro!

Una amiga me recomendó este libro en el 2007 y me ojala hubiera sido antes! Cambió totalmente la perspectiva que tenia acera de las relaciones romanticas y de los hombres. He recomendado y comprado copias para mis amigas y familia desde entonces. Siempre lo leo cuando empiezo a salir con una nueva persona y me sorprendió ver cómo algunos de los ejemplos en el libro se parecen a experiencias pasadas mias o a algunas de las experiencias de mis amigas.

Este libro ayuda a distinguir cuando un hombre está realmente interesado en una relación con una mujer o cuando sólo quiere jugar y no la esta tomando en serio. Tiene ejemplos específicos de situaciones e indica cómo actuar cuando se inicia una relación y durante una relación. El libro explica que los hombres admiran a las mujeres que son fuertes, independientes y que no se dejan manipular. Explica que a los hombres les gustan los retos y que por lo general no toman en serio a una mujer que siempre está tratando de complacerlo y que cambia toda su vida por él, despues de poco tiempo de conocerlo. Este libro aconseja a actuar como un premio y no estar siempre disponible para un hombre, tambien recomienda a las mujeres que den prioridad a su vida antes que a la de un hombre.

Después de leer este libro, ya no me conformo con poco! Gracias a la autora por escribir este libro, es excelente!

About the Author
Betsy de Thierry is a mum of four brilliant boys, a practising psychotherapist and a qualified primary school teacher who has founded several charities that work directly with troubled families. She is CEO of BdT Ltd (www.betsytraininguk.co.uk) trauma training, consultancy and leadership, which supports professionals who work with traumatised children across the UK. Betsy is the Founding Director of the Trauma Recovery Centre (www.trc-uk.org) and Director of the Institute of Recovery of Childhood Trauma (www.irct.org.uk). Emma Reeves is an Art Psychotherapist based at the Trauma Recovery Centre in Bath. She currently works with clients aged 5-25 years who have experienced trauma. She has an MA in Fine Art and an MSc in Art Psychotherapy.
