Good source of knowledge about hot BPM architecture topics.

I was very excited buying the book; I must say it has satisfied my expectations.
It is a good source of knowledge about practical approach to BPM architecture.
Especially I like the chapters describing the enterprise BPM.
However there are some issues that make book not a perfect one.
Some chapters are written without proper text review. Looks like authors do not have enough time to finish them. The illustrations/diagrams might be better design and more carefully named.
Instead of describing BPMN basics I would prefer to read about the modelling used by authors for their BPM projects.
I cannot find connections to Oracle Reference Architecture [ORA] for BPM. I think the authors should to rather extend ORA then re-invent something by their own.

I am waiting for second revised edition.
I should contain the Oracle new approach to cloud especially PCS and ICS.

About the Author
Ray C. Mullin is a former electrical instructor for the Wisconsin Schools of Vocational, Technical, and Adult Education. Prior to his retirement, he served as district manager, regional manager, regional vice president, and ultimately director technical liaison for a major electrical manufacturer. He also served on the NFPA Code Making Panel 4 of the National Electrical Code. A former journeyman and supervisor for residential, commercial, and industrial installations, he has taught electrical apprentice and journeyman courses, conducted numerous technical and Code seminars, written many articles for electrical trade publications, and consulted for electrical equipment manufacturers on legal issues. A former member of the Executive Board of the Western Section of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors, he is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and National Fire Protection Association, Electrical Section. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee School of Engineering, and Colorado State University.

This book has made a straight forward topic unnecessarily confusing and time consuming. There's lots of information that's organized well. It’s a great reference guide for any electrical work that you plan to do. It also will give practice examples, including a practice and example blue print. Also test quiz at the end of each chapter. All you need in one book.

An Amazing Book!

I have the Black & Decker Complete Guide to Home Wiring but it was published in 2002. I saw the new third edition was published in 2005. I like the Black & Decker Complete Guide Books because they have amazing illustrations. They educate you just enough for you to realize that you need a much better book. I wanted an extremely comprehensive book that included the new 2008 national electrical code. My search led me to this book.
This is a text book. A different reviewer wrote that this was not a reference book. I disagree. The purpose of a text book is to thoroughly educate a novice on a specific topic. This book is extremely informative. I purchased the paperback edition. This book is well worth the money. This is the book that you want to buy. Your search is over.

Great Book for Electrical Projects

I have recently completed rewiring a cabin and a old house in the Twin Cities area. My projects were probably a little more complex than some as they involved installing new service entrances and new panels. More importantly they involved getting an electrical permit, which meant visits from the local electrical inspector. For this reason I did a lot of reading. One of the books I read was the this book. I really liked it because of the detailed code information many books left out or assumed you already knew. Written as a textbook for students in the electrical trade it covers things like outlet spacing, number of circuits required in a kitchen, size of conductors for service entrances, box fill violations ect. The great thing about Mullin's approach is he covers a house room by room with what the code requires with references. The actual National Electrical Code is not well organized and you would spend a lot of time trying to find what you need. By applying Mullin's book to my work, all of my projects passed inspection the first time around! I agree with other reviewers that it does not cover some wiring skills things like fishing wires through old houses or how to wire an outlet or switch. For this reason, I have three other suggestions:

"Wiring a House" by Rex Cauldwell. This was a good book for learning how to plan out the wiring for my projects, it has excellent photographs and how to information. I especially like his "above code" suggestions for making your wiring more useful and safer.

Another suggestion is the Black and Decker Wiring book, it is very good at showing the basics of wiring and has good color photographs. I think it is much better than the Home Depot book.

There is also a handy little book (and cheap!) called "Step by Step Guidebook on Home Wiring Diagrams" by Ray McReynolds. It is a small orange book I found at Home Depot and have seen at other home improvement stores. This book is not flashy and is easily overlooked or dismissed, it just has black and white drawings of wiring diagrams for just about every wiring situation a homeowner could get into, like three way and 4 way switches, outlets, lights ect. This book also shows different ways to wire all these devices, such as when the power comes in at the switch or comes in at the light ect.

The bottom line, if you are doing any complex wiring in your home and want to be code compliant this is a good book for you. If you are just looking for how to wire switches and outlets, buy the Black and Decker book and the little home wiring diagram book. Happy Wiring!

About the Author

Deborah Rambo Sinn taught for two decades at colleges and universities and has performed classical concerts on four continents. She lived in Germany for five years where she also played keyboards for professional musical productions and coached opera singers and instrumentalists in music interpretation. Sinn currently resides in Washington State, where she is active as a private teacher, coach, and performer.

Highly recommend if you are trying to figure out the "correct" way to play classical music

I am actually going to require this for a graduate piano pedagogy class. It is very hard to teach musicality without destroying someone's individuality. This is technical yet not too difficult reading, if you are a classical musician and/or have some theory background. You must know how to read music well in order to comprehend. There are online examples--I probably won't use them in class, as I want them to think and demonstrate themselves.

I have a lot of adult students who have difficulty with things like "emote." This book explains HOW to emote--what you need to do at the piano.

Fantastic book, applies to more than just piano

Playing Beyond the Notes is an extremely informative yet interesting book: providing in-depth analysis of musical technique with clear delivery and entertaining voice. Dr. Rambo Sinn manages to discuss important ideas in a way that musicians of all ages and levels (even those who don't play the piano) can rapidly improve their ability and find deeper understanding of compositions extremely quickly. The accompanying musical examples (recorded by the author, an excellent and respected professional pianist) help cement the ideas presented, as you can hear exactly what the author means and keep the musical examples in your head as you read the book. Coming from the standpoint of someone who plays both the piano and a woodwind instrument, I found that it was great to apply concepts found within this guide to all music I learn: not just piano pieces. Playing Beyond the Notes has helped me understand and apply musicality and ideas of lyricism both on the small, detailed scale within specific pieces, but also in a much more general sense. A must read for musicians or music-lovers of all ages!

Remarkable --One of a Kind

Deborah Rambo Sinn's Book: Playing Beyond The Notes, is a unique and fascinating journey through the mind (and heart) and of the the pianist, performer and creative musician. There are few (if any) books which address the process of music-making-- illuminating the questions and problems of phrasing and interpretation. Not only does this book accomplish it beautifully, but the author approaches the topic in such a natural and accessible way. Playing Beyond the Notes, is not only for music lovers interested in the musical process of the pianist/performer, but is a "hands on" approach to be read by all professional musicians, music teachers and students who are in interested in learning and teaching the development of real musicianship.
...Quite simply.... a fabulous book.

Useful But Too Long

Nice companion to the Sony RX100 - it covers a lot of information but it's really very, very long for a user guide - 370-odd pages. That's because it's so, so, so verbose, it's like ploughing through a Russian novel. Did I mention it's verbose? Just opening the book to a random section offers gems that can be used in a "How Not to Write a User Guide" textbook.

Here's an example from the self-timer section, "The self-timer is useful for occasions when you need to be the photographer and also appear in a group photograph, because you can set the RX100 on a tripod, set the timer for 10 seconds, and then move around to place yourself in the group before the shutter clicks. The self-timer also is helpful in other situations, though, such as whenever you are taking a picture under conditions in which you don’t want to cause blur by jiggling the camera as you press the shutter button. For example, when you’re taking a macro shot very close to the subject, the focusing can be very critical, and any bump to the camera could throw off the focus. Using the self-timer means the camera has a chance to settle down after the shutter button is pressed, before the image is actually recorded. Once you select the self-timer option, you are presented with two choices: ten seconds and two seconds. When the self-timer option is highlighted, just press the left or right direction button on the control wheel to choose between these options. Once you have made this selection, the self-timer icon will appear in the upper left corner of the display, with the chosen number of seconds (10 or 2) displayed next to the icon, as shown in Figure 4-15."

I mean, come on! The whole book is like that, I found myself constantly skipping paragraphs to get to the parts that matter. Would have been a great guide if it was pared down to 60 - 70 pages, which can easily be done. 4 stars for effort and thoroughness though, it actually covers a lot of material and contains a lot of information. (It has too many notes, just take out a few and it'll be perfect!)

i bought the Kindle version of this guide expecting the illustrations to be in black and white. While this is true if you are using a Kindle, much to my surprise when I viewed the guide on an I-pad using the Kindle app or on a PC using the free 'Kindle on a PC' the illustrations were shown in color.

The guide while covering all of the many controls of the RX-100 is written in a way that makes the technical material accessible.

1. Many of the controls can be accessed in different ways; the guide makes it clear how this can be done.
2. The effects of the controls are shown in the many illustrations--here having them shown in color is a great advantage.
3. The author gives many suggestions about how a control should be set. Very helpful for a beginner, just starting to find their way about the camera.

Essential manual

This is a well-written, well thought out, and comprehensive manual for the RX100. It's long enough to convey all the necessary features of the camera and how they work, but it's not overly long. The text is accompanied by many photos which illustrate parts of the camera, the settings as they appear on the LCD, and some illustrative images of camera features (images of different settings for the RX100's "DRO" feature, for example). To me, it seemed that the Table of Contents was overly long, and I would have liked the Index at the back of the book to be in print format, rather than in "ABCD" format. This in not really a drawback, since clicking (I have the digital version of the manual) on a letter brings up all the camera's features which begin with that letter.

Coming to the RX100 from many years of shooting with Canon cameras, the "Photographer's Guide..." was also an excellent guide to the Sony camera interface. The Sony interface is sometimes confusing and difficult for a newcomer to master, especially if (s)he comes to Sony from a more intuitive interface such as Canon's; the "Photographer's Guide..." makes the interface much clearer and easier to use.

Since the heyday of the Great Commoner, William Jennings Bryan, populism has shifted from being a leftist to a decidedly rightist phenomenon. While that dismays self-avowedly liberal Kazin (an editor of Tikkun magazine), he maintains an even keel in his journey through the past century's colorful parade of tribunes purporting to be the vox populi. To Kazin, political rhetoric defines the populism in question, which usually falls into two categories: that which aspires to uplift the common person's economic condition (and rails against privileged plutocrats), and that which calls for a religious revival to save America, as happened with the temperance movement. Supported by this sensible structure, Kazin narrates the fortunes of the Anti-Saloon League, the American Federation of Labor, Father Coughlin's popularity with isolationist Catholics in the 1930s, anti-Communist opinion in the 1950s, the fervor and futilities of the New Left in the 1960s, and the utilization in recent years of populist, anti-statist sentiment by independent politicians (George Wallace or Ross Perot) and former Democrats and unionists (Ronald Reagan). Much better then What's the Matter with Kansas

Kazin's book is really a history of populist rhetoric, not populism per se. Thus, the title, the Populist PERSUASION!

Thankfully, Kazin does not ridicule populism as RICHARD HOFSTADTER did in his book, The Age of Reform. But Kazin still relies too heavily on the urbane cosmopolitan view of most liberals that populism is more a style of rhetoric to appeal to the uneducated rubes than a coherent set of political ideas or reforms.

Real populism more then an rhetorical style! It was a political movement of common people to control their own lives within a democratic market system with specific objectives like the crop banks and the sub-treasury plan. The Farmer-Laborer Alliances of the late 19th Century, and the People's Party that resulted, always referred to their reform movement as 'cooperation', not socialism. They were largely inspired by ideas of Thomas Jefferson, and the founding fathers. In this context, populism should be viewed as a struggle between democratic capitalism vs. speculative and monopoly capitalism, not a style of political rhetoric.

For an understanding of Populist reforms and political agenda, one would be better served by LAWERENCE GOODWYN's book, The Populist Moment: A Short History of the Agrarian Revolt in America.

That is not to say that Kazin's book is not an important book. To the best of my knowledge, Kazin is the only book to documented the 20th Century abandonment of populist impulses to the anti-semitism of Father Caughlin, and after the culture wars of the 60's, and the identity politics of the 70's to the likes of George Wallace and Rush Limbaugh.

As such, it is a valuable political history that does much to explain our modern "Blue/Red State" deadlock then more recent books, like Thomas Franks' What's the Matter with Kansas? How Conservatives Won the Heart of America, or John Sperling's The Great Divide: Retro vs. Metro America.

Creative history, well written

Kazin extends his masterful understanding of the mental world of Gilded Age America, following the populist approach all the way to the Reagan era and beyond. For my money, I'd be happier if he had also placed more context around the rise of populism; after all, is not the idea of liberal democracy itself poulist, on some level? But he starts with what he knows best- the mental space occupied by William Jenning Bryan and those who understood his appeal. (Kazin knows Bryan well; I consider his biography the best of breed.)

The Populist Persuasion attempts to show that political populism is not just a movement of farmers and workers in the Gilded Age, but rather it is a way of seeing social and economic issues and offering a solution that addresses the needs of the amorphous "people." As such, it is a political persuasion that survives its initial application and lends itself to the needs of (among others) the socially conscious Christian, the labor organizer, and the new-left activist. This is useful, but as historical analysis it is inherently imprecise, after the manner of compelling political synthesis.

I do wish he or his editor had not attached the subtitle "An American History." It is not near that much of a synthesis, and it would have been much weaker if it were. It is a study that describes and extends populism IN American history into the recent past.

Kazin elsewhere acknowledges his personal secular liberal bias, and indeed it results in one of the few tenuous moments in the book when he portrays populism's "capture" at the hands of the modern political right. His critique is measured and fair, I think, but the viewpoint from which he writes is evident. Fair enough.

Kazin has a rare gift for making this kind of mental exercise clear and accessible without oversimplifying. He is a gifted historical writer, and this is a fine example of his craft. I like the book well enough that it is a required case-study for my US political history survey. High praise.

THIS IS YOUR COUNTRY. DON'T LET THE BIG MEN TAKE IT AWAY FROM YOU. This quote, taken from the introduction to chapter 5 of Michael Kazin's book, epitomizes the spirit of the people and their "persuaders" in The Populist Persuasion. This work traces the uses of populist language from the antebellum era through the 1990s. It is the story of populism, not Populism (as in exclusively the 1890s movement), a flexible mode of persuasion used to convince large numbers of people to join a social and political movement. It is, as the previous reviewer lamented, a rhetorical style, not an ideology at all. The author does not take this lightly. He stresses that populism must be taken seriously and especially admonishes Democratic leaders for allowing it to be co-opted by conservatives. Populism "leaps ideological boundaries" (193), and that,as much as anything, is the lasting lesson of this provocative book.

This is a strong work, examining many popular movements, which prima facie, have little to do with each other. This is a fresh interpretation, not so much an examination of new historical sources. The author explains the central term as follows: "populism can be and probably must be a potent means to the end of a more democratic polity...but it can't be the end itself." It has been used over the years to manipulate the public into action, and according to Kazin, often action adverse to their own interests.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in political analysis or the history of mass movements. Kazin admits to regret that populism came to be better exploited by the right than the left since WWII, but that does not mean that this book is biased. The only problem I can see is with what's included and excluded. With such a broadly defined "impulse," almost any movement could be labeled "populist." Even though Kazin is a "power to the people" leftist who decries the decline of the American left, this book is fair and balanced. I'm not sure he'd like that "FOX-like" moniker, though!

He’s never rutted with one and doesn’t have any desire, whatsoever, to rut with one in the future, let alone mate and impregnate one. Claiming one of these females will not be an easy feat considering there are three other dragon tribes vying for the opportunity.
How the hell is he supposed to do all of this when he doesn’t want to come within a mile of one of these unsavory creatures?

frustrated

Ugh ... I'm a little over half-way through the book and I'm ready to reach in and punch the heroine in the throat. She's sooooo ridiculous. She harps constantly on not only getting raped, but on how his big "man parts" will tear her up. Even after she's been shown and proven that no rapes occur, even though she's been shown and proven that other human women are very happy with their dragon shifters, in and out of bed, she still insists that SHE will be raped and that the others aren't smart enough to know that they are being raped too. Apparently the other grown women are incapable of making their own decisions and Julie is the only one with a brain ... in Julie's opinion. Of course, all of this is going through her head at the same time that she's turned on by the guy and going on about how hot and sexy he is and that she should just go ahead and jump his bones.

So poor Coal has to put up with this bi-polar ditz, I couldn't feel sorrier for him! I'm really hoping the 2nd half of the book redeems itself, Julie starts taking meds and Coal finally gets off the merry-go-round!

***UPDATE***

I finished the book and unfortunately, Julie never really redeemed herself. Coal was great, I'd love a man like that in my life. He made some mistakes but he owned them and he changed and he didn't balk at doing either. He also didn't wallow in the past the way that Julie does. She lets her past color EVERYTHING about her present and her future and it gets really old fast.

It's not a bad story and the premise is quite good actually, it's just a sucky heroine.

Could Have Been Great. Failed.

This book had potential, but it tanked.
Hard.
First of all, the cheesily named dragon shifters kidnap women. They're led to fear that they will be raped, then ALL OF A SUDDEN most of the women are happily sleeping with the dragon shifters that beat the crap out of each other for the women. It moved far too fast with no explanation for anything. There should have been so much more fight in these women.
The only one with reservations was the female protagonist. Even then, she cried fear of rape until she was begging for sex.
The whole book was poorly written and the plot devices were non-existent. Plot devices were eschewed in favor of revealing most things through dialogue.

at first i really did not like Coal. his arrogant attitude grated on my nerves. i did feel bad for Scarlet until she was so mean to the other women. she should have been mad at Blaze. what happened to the other women? Coal proved himself. He turned out to be perfect for julie. julie was slightly annoying in her resistance but she finally came around. i really like Flame. Blaze is hiding something. great read.
