Dore does it again!
By Allen Holden
Beautiful, lyrical, and sensuous images from the Crusades.I am enraprured by the scope, graphic power and compositional greatness of this largely forgotten artist. Though we may look at the politics of the Crusades differently than the Victorians, this book is sure to please any fan of 19th century art. One look at Dore and you see where Cecil B. Demille got much of his inspiration.

Excellent
By R. Smith
Excellent book. This is a must-have for fans of Dore's work. I'm almost tempted to buy a second copy to frame a few pages. I will say that the paper is not exactly bright-white, compared to similar products (The Dore Bible Illustrations, The Dore Illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy), but I'm not going to take a star away on account of that.

Dore: true Crusader among simple knights!
By Debora Gau
As a student of the Crusade period, I would be hard-pressed to find illustrations that better represent the time in history, either in literature, art, legend, or historical tales! Dore brings us directly back to a time we long to touch in our fantasies, and gives us an appreciation of what it was like to ride with the Crusaders "back in the day". There are precious few really good artists who truly help us to reach back like Dore. Oh, perhaps Leighton, Waterhouse, and a number of the pre-Raphaelite painters; perhaps Pyle, Wyeth, and a few other illustrators. And of course novelists such as Stevenson, Lamb, Doyle, Pyle once more, Scott, and Haggard, to name just a few--can transport us through their words back to the days when hearts and swords met on the field of battle. But there is something about Dore who truly captures the feel and atmosphere of the time. This book is given 5 stars only because it is not possible to give it 6; a true gem among jewels!

The evolution of microcontrollers (i.e., single-chip microcomputers) has been driven by two strong trends. One trend is the demand for a low-cost means of putting intelligence into a product. When a product is produced in quantities of millions, a small savings in component cost will drive component selection decisions. Another trend is the demand for a programmable solution when an application has severe timing constraints, such as those in automobile engine control. This demand has led to ever faster, more sophisticated microcontroller architectures. Microchip Technology has evolved its product line of PIC microcontrollers from simple, low-cost devices. Subsequent generations of PIC microcontrollers have included enhancements to meet the needs of an increasing circle of applications. At the same time, Microchip has never lost sight of the value of introducing new technology at the lowest possible cost and thereby "buying" market share. As pointed out in Chapter 1 of this text, Microchip has followed this strategy to the point where it is now the number two producer of eight-bit microcontrollers in the world, with a market share that continues to rise each year. Because eight-bit microcontrollers span the needs of most applications, "eight-bitters" dominate the world of microcontrollers.

This book is developed around Microchip's latest family of parts, the PIC I8FXXX family. It focuses on the PIC 18F452, a new part brought to market in May 2002. It is a 40-pin microcontroller upgrade of their earlier PIC 16C74 and PIC 16F877 microcontrollers. This upgrade will be familiar to users of those parts, but with myriad enhancements. Virtually all of the quirks that characterized earlier PIC microcontroller parts have been eliminated. The flash program memory of the PIC 1817452 microcontroller makes low-cost development possible. Not only is the part inexpensive (less than $10 in single quantities), but it is supported by Microchip's free assembler and by a free Qwikl3ug monitor program. QwikBug, once programmed into the chip, supports the downloading of successive iterations of a user program and supports the ability to debug the user program with the help of running to a breakpoint, monitoring/changing watch variables, and single-stepping.

To provide a "learning by doing" environment, a QwikFlash development board is included inside the back cover of this first printing of the book. A photograph of the populated board is shown in Figure 4-1. Readers not interested in using this board may wish to know that the board is included, gratis, courtesy of a friend of the author. Parts for populating the board can be purchased under a special arrangement with the DigiKey Corporation. Appendix Al includes the Digi-Key parts list as well as construction hints, intended both for the novice who has never soldered before and for the experienced student, professional, and hobbyist. Alternatively, a populated board can be purchased from MICRODESIGNS, Inc. via their Web site, www.microdesignsinc.com .

Throughout this book, the approach taken is to introduce a template of assembly language code that encompasses a set of features of the PIC18F452 plus its interactions with some of the I/O devices resident on the QwikFlash board. In this way, it is intended that the reader will find a smooth path to the creative process of writing enhanced application code. There is no end to the variety of such enhancements, many of which are suggested in the end-of-chapter problems. Others are listed in Appendix A10 as a set of suggested lab projects that might accompany the first offering of a college or university course organized around this book. Still other project enhancements are suggested by the presence of the many features of the microcontroller and by the versatility of the QwikFlash board's I/O devices themselves.

Many years ago, Skip Addison impressed me with the clarity that his structured assembler could bring to the writing of code. Its implementation of nested IF . . . ELSE... ENDIF, WHILE . . . ENDWHILE, and REPEAT . . . UNTIL constructs gave assembly language the clean control flow normally associated with a compiled language such as C. At this time, Jessica Meremonte has prepared a free structured assembly preprocessor that, together with Microchip's free (and excellent) assembler, does this same thing for code writing with the PIC18F452 microcontroller. Introduced in Chapter 6, the use of Jessica's sasm utility acts like a one-step assembler. It enhances the code writing process, and code understandability, for the remaining 14 chapters of the book.

To utilize a microcontroller effectively, a designer should develop at least three capabilities, each of which is addressed in this book. First, he or she must understand available components. This begins with the microcontroller itself, with its CPU register structure, its instruction set, its addressing modes, and its on-chip resources. It extends to user I/O devices such as keypads and displays and sensing/ control devices such as temperature transducers and stepper motor actuators. Using interrupt control, a microcontroller can juggle many real-time activities simultaneously. To achieve this without error, the designer must understand how the microcontroller handles interrupts and the timing issues related to them.

Second, the designer must thoroughly understand the algorithmic processes required by each aspect of the design and be able to translate them into the language of the microcontroller. For example, the design of an antilock brake system for an automobile involves an understanding of both the brake system dynamics and the implementation of a suitable control algorithm.

Third, the designer must understand how the extensive requirements of an instrument or device can be broken down into manageable parts. Almost any project can be likened to the process of jumping from boulder to boulder to cross a stream. Each boulder may represent the design ideas needed to understand and use a device such as a liquid crystal display. But in addition to studying boulders, the designer must pay attention to how streams are crossed. Through examples, both with the template programs and with complete designs available on the author's web site (e.g., the source code for the QwikFlash instrument described in Section 4.3), the reader can view the structure of several projects.

This book attempts to organize and unify the development of these three capabilities: to understand and use components, to exploit powerful algorithmic processes, and to break down the complexity of an instrument or device so as to meet its specifications.

ABOUT THE BOOK

This book will typically be used in a one-semester course at the senior level. Alternatively, it might be used at the junior level if it is deemed worthwhile to trade the increased engineering experience of seniors for the opportunity to follow this course with other design-oriented courses and individual project activities. Although the context of the book is electrical, each component is sufficiently explained to permit the book to be used in a variety of curricula as an introduction to design using a microcontroller. The incentive to so use the book lies in the diverse applications made possible by the availability of a "controller on a chip."

There has been an attempt to make many parts of the book self-contained. A reader might scan Chapter 1 to gain the perspective of Steve Sanghi, CEO and President of Microchip Technology. Chapters 2 and 3 describe the PIC18F452's CPU structure, instructions, and addressing modes. The brief Chapter 4 describes the features of the QwikFlash board (i.e., the built-up version of the bare board located on the inside back cover of the book). This description includes one application of the board as a QwikFlash instrument to measure frequencies and time intervals with uncanny accuracy, using a free program available from the author's web site.

Chapters 5 and 6 present the first template of code and a discussion of development alternatives. This latter discussion is augmented in the appendices. Appendix sections A1.2 and A4.3 describe Microchip's ICD2 in in-circuit debugger. Appendix A4 describes the free QwikBug on-chip monitor program and what it takes to program it into a chip. Appendix A3 describes how the free sasm structured assembler utility can be used with or without the support of Microchip's MPLAB facility. Appendix section A5.2 describes the free QwikAddress utility and the help it provides in conjunction with the sasm utility.

Chapter 7 develops the use of the liquid-crystal display built into the QwikFlash board. A second template of code is presented, serving as a stepping stone for subsequent project work. Chapters 8 and 12 augment the discussion of user I/O available on the board. Chapter 8 discusses a widely used input device, the rotary pulse generator (RPG). Chapter 12 develops what amounts to an allocation scheme play and the RPG, for user input.

Chapter 9 discusses the timing and the critical region issues associated with interrupts. It describes the high- and low-priority mechanisms built into the chip to field interrupts and explains how to allocate interrupt sources between the two so as to be most effective in meeting the timing requirements of and application.

The remaining chapters of the book can be "mixed and matched" to meet the needs of a course and its sequencing of lab projects. Chapters 13 and 16 explain in detail how to use the PIC 18F452's superb timers for capturing the timing of input events and for controlling the timing for output events. Chapters l describe the nuances of using the chip's analog and digital input pins. Chapter 14 explains how to use any of Microchip's library of 36 integer subroutines for dealing with the multiplication and division of multiple-byte unsigned and signed numbers. It also explains how to use their eight floating-point subroutines and the role of these subroutines in retaining the precision of a computation. Chapters 15 and 17 delve into two approaches for expanding the number of I/O pins available as well as two convenient means for enhancing the peripheral capabilities of the chip beyond those peripherals already built chip. Chapter 18 discusses the use of the UART built into the chip while Chapter 19 looks at how a low-end PIC microcontroller can be used as a smart peripheral, connecting to the PIC 1817452 through one of its UART pins. Chapter 20 discusses a variety of disparate but significant features of the chip, including the use of its non-volatile data EEPROM, its watchdog timer and brownout reset circuits, and how it can be operated to achieve an exceedingly low battery supply current.

The last two template programs, P3 and P4, are recast as C programs written by Mike Chow and included in Appendix A7. Each one is written for both Microchip Technology's C compiler and Hi-Tech Software's C compiler, two high-quality C compilers. A class that makes the switch from assembly coding can benefit from the use of the P3 template, cast in C. As a template for subsequent work, it encompasses many issues that will arise as further code is written. The P4 template illustrates how to handle interrupts.

This book is directed toward a specific goal of engineering studies—the development of creative capability. Given a powerful, low-cost microcontroller chip, a low-cost development board, and the development tools needed to develop and debug program code, we are able to focus the design process on the microcontroller chip itself and a variety of I/O devices, thereby giving zest to the process of learning. While some of these I/O devices are available on the QwikFlash board itself, the laboratory for a college or university course can make use of a second QwikProto board to expand the variety of 1/O resources easily, as described in Appendix A2 and illustrated, by example, in the photograph of Figure A2-5. Other I/O possibilities are described there and in Appendix section A 10.2. Also refer to the author's web site, www.picbook.com , for URLs pointing to I/O device information and project ideas being employed at other universities. To help readers take advantage of the opportunities for developing microcontroller design capability, most chapters close with an assortment of problems, many having a design flavor. A suggested course calendar is included at the beginning of Appendix A10 along with 10 "starter" lab projects.

Useful information, poor layout.
By Colin D. Barnard
If having technical diagrams over the page to the corresponding text annoys you, then be prepared to be annoyed! The book doesn't get going really until chapter 3, however I found that having the technical figures (in most cases) not on the page or adjoining page, but having to flick back and forth a distraction to my concentration. The diagrams while helpful are a little confusing with the way in which they are layed out.
In some places after describing a method in addressing registers, the example uses an alternative - fine, if in the context of, there is more than one way to achieve this, but this is patently not the context here.
The book seems to be really designed to be part of a classroom tutorial and discussion.
Be ready to put in some extra concentration if your buying this book without resource to other literature.
On the whole the book is technically useful, the hardcover pleasant, but the placing of the diagrams really let the book down.

Excellent Book - Great follow-on first book
By Dave
John's book is a great follow on to his original book, "Design with PIC Microcontrollers. The book is not a cut and paste solution (As are two other good books "Easy PIC'n" and "PIC'n Up The Pace") and is intended to teach the student how to best use the architecture. The intent of the book is to give the student enough theory to use the PIC18F452 and understand the design philosophy of the architecture. The book is a great compliment to the Microchip datasheet service as a "user's guide". Great examples of how the 18F452 architecture can be best utilized, well organized diagrams (Which, by the way do not require "flicking back and forth" any more that a typical technical book I've read ). The subject material covers all of the highlights of the PIC18F452, giving examples for typical usages of LCD displays, A/D, Interrupts, I/O pin considerations, timers, math subroutines, I2C/SMBus usage, UART, etc. There are supporting code template designed to suggest possible code organization. The book develops a very useful utility (SASM) to preprocess PIC assembly in an attempt to make assembly language more structured. The utility IS NOT required and the rest of the book may be read without using the utility. I had no problem obtaining the components for the included circuit board (All required parts can be purchased as a kit from Digi-Key at a discount) and found it very comparable to Microchip's own demo boards.

Many illustrations to help you visualize
By Robert Shultz
Although some material in the book can be read from spec sheets found on the net, the book really helps to sort through a lot of the clutter in spec sheets. A major benefit of this book is that it provides plenty of detailed illustrations to help you understand the facilities of the PIC instead of simply giving you page after page of techical specs. It also provides plenty of "template" code to help you get up and running if you're kind of new to microcontroller assembly.
If you do the sample projects throughout the book, they really help you better understand most of the facilities of the PIC.
One thing to note is that the book is written for a semester long college course though I think it's doable for self-study if you have at least some background with PICs. It even provides a PCB on the back cover whereby you can build your own board (I think you can order a package from digikey that has all the parts you need to build one) to run your code on.

The Chomolungma Diaries: Climbing Mount Everest with a commercial expedition (Footsteps on the Mountain Travel Diaries), by Mark Horrell

In April 2012 Mark Horrell travelled to Tibet hoping to become, if not the first person to climb Mount Everest, at least the first Karl Pilkington lookalike to do so.

He joined a mountaineering expedition which included an Australian sexagenarian, two Brits whose idea of hydration meant a box of red wine, and a New Zealander who enjoyed reminding his teammates of the perils of altitude sickness and the number of ways they might die on summit day.

The media often write about Mount Everest deaths and how easy the world's highest mountain has become to climb, but how accurately does this reflect reality?

The Chomolungma Diaries is a true story of ordinary people climbing Mount Everest with a commercial expedition, and preparing for the biggest day of their lives.

Imagine your life clipped into a narrow line of cord five miles above the earth, on the world's most terrifying ridge walk. This book will bring you just a little bit closer to that experience.

About this series

The Footsteps on the Mountain Travel Diaries are Mark's expedition journals. Quick reads, they are lightly edited versions of what he scribbles in his tent each evening after a day in the mountains.

Mark's first full-length book, Seven Steps from Snowdon to Everest, about his journey to becoming an Everest climber, was published in November 2015.

About the Author
For five years Mark Horrell has written what has been described as one of the most credible Everest opinion blogs out there. He writes about trekking and mountaineering from the often silent perspective of the commercial client.

For over a decade he has been exploring the world's greater mountain ranges and keeping a diary of his travels. As a writer he strives to do for mountain history what Bill Bryson did for long-distance hiking.

Several of his expedition diaries are available as quick reads from the major online bookstores. His first full-length book, Seven Steps from Snowdon to Everest, about his ten-year journey from hill walker to Everest climber, was published in November 2015.

His favourite mountaineering book is The Ascent of Rum Doodle by W.E. Bowman.

Fascinating and troubling read
By VG
Longer than most of Horrell's other mountaineering diaries, this book has about four dozen chapters (or diary entries), but in fact, you could say that it has three main parts:

Part One, which I'd call Happy Hour: Up to the 60% mark on Kindle, it's happy hour for Horrell and his mates. Really, up to the 60% mark, it seems the difference between climbing Everest and smaller mountains is there's an extra month thrown in for acclimatisation (or, in plain English, Happy Hour!) There must be 30 pages devoted to happy hour in this section. It's really quite humorous - the amount of time spent swilling is easily triple the time spent climbing. There's even some happy hour drama. It's all in good fun, this first 60%, and there are some fine passages about acclimatisation, getting to the North Col, and about misery at Advanced Base Camp, but man, Happy Hour. Until the 60 % mark of the book, I'd say happy hour and drinking are the most prominent aspects.

Part Two, which I'd label The trek to the summit: After the 60% mark, the second story starts, and it's far more serious. No more booze. No more jokes. The tone changes completely. Base camps are left behind and the exhausting climb to the summit begins. This is tense stuff and gripping. Horrell becomes just another scared guy who's trying to get there, but above all, get back. In most other travel diaries that I've read, he's been well within himself and summited with ease, or given up because of weather, not because of his limits. But here, he's severely tested even though conditions are excellent, the crowds are not too bad, and he essentially has a private Sherpa to help him out. Nonetheless, above 8300, on the summit push, he's not the cocky guy he was down below during happy hour, not by a long shot. In fact he seems out of his element entirely. He's pretty close to being the slowest person on the mountain that day, getting back to Camp 3 almost 18 exhausting hours after he left it! Already shaky and unable to eat by the day of the push, he has trouble with his gear, his oxygen, his goggles, everything. Really, he's a wreck. At several points on the way down, he even experiences dangerous micro-sleeps. It was tense stuff.

Part Three, in which we learn of other people on the mountain that day who had it worse: The last 5% of the book is frankly depressing and troubling. By the time Horrell gets back to Base Camp 3, he's a wreck: severely dehydrated, physically exhausted, mentally trashed, not even remotely pleased with his day, his body and mind locked in survivor mode. But chillingly, on his way down that day, he runs into two other climbers from other teams, one still going up(!), the other coming down, both of whom are essentially as bad off as he is. We learn on the final page that the book is dedicated to one of these two people. Enough said. Very depressing stuff.

Horrell writes in the final pages that he hopes he's managed to dispel some of the misconceptions people have about expeditions to Everest - that they're not all just fat wealthy jerks carried to the top by Sherpas so they can tick off another item on the old bucket list. In some ways, he succeeds; in other ways, not so much. His expedition has ordinary guys and women who train (and drink) hard, and who save up to be able to have some extraordinary experiences. And yet, there still seems to be something terribly wrong with these expeditions to me. During the weeks-long acclimatisation period, while the expedition members do a little climbing and a lot of drinking, the Sherpas are almost non-stop trudging up and down the mountain, making caches, installing lines, and just generally getting the mountain ready all the way up to 8300 so that the majority of expedition members can have a chance at the summit and get back safely. Horrell doesn't deny any of this. He freely admits that without the Sherpas, he's nobody, and he's never getting to the top without them. But it doesn't bother him. I'm ambivalent. I realize that it's difficult or impossible for people who like climbing and who are serious about it to spend months at Everest hauling all their own stuff up from camp to camp, and doing all the dirty work on their own. But I'd be a lot more impressed if the mountaineers and the Sherpas at least did approximately equal work as partners. Take an extra month (or more), with the attendant costs and time off work, and help schlep your oxygen, your tents, your lines, your food, your kitchen stuff up to ABC and beyond. It would reduce the numbers by half, and the extra time at altitude doing Sherpa-style work (very slowly, admittedly) would improve the mountaineers' abilities and fitness and maybe result in fewer fatalities.

Perhaps I'm being totally unrealistic, but frankly, I find Horrell's experiences in Denali Nights to be much closer to what I would consider real mountaineering.

But I'm out of my element at this point. I've only ever done a tiny amount of climbing, and only actually had porters once. I've never even been above 5000. But there you go. Four stars.

Great Everest expedition narrative
By Dion Hinchcliffe
While you won't find excessive drama or death on the mountains up close in Mark's book, it's certainly the best blow-by-blow of a modern climb of Everest by a real climber you'll find for the price. Personally, I found the details of both the climb logistics itself as well as the interpersonal stories of the team members to be a greatly entertaining and informative. Plenty of dry humor, human interest, and climbing lore for those that relish the details of what it's really like. In short, those looking for a sensational Everest climbing account won't find it here. Instead, those looking for an interesting page turner that's actually worth some study for what it tells you about the real experience and mechanics high altitude climbing will be rewarded.

Good Writing, Easy Reading
By Chan Joon Yee
Mark Horrell writes a very readable account of his successful climb of Mt Everest in 2012. Their teams starts off in Kathmandu and makes the overland journey to Tibet to climb the mountain from the north. From the start, the reader may be misled into thinking that this is some parody of sorts. Horrell is funny and is able to derive humour out of every unpleasant situation in the mountains. However, he soon gets serious with his day to day, blow by blow account of the events. Still, I can't help wondering how much beer their team actually brought to Base Camp.

Horrell goes in great detail describing their long and tedious acclimatisation climbs. To his credit, he does so without boring the reader. When the narrow window is found and the team gets ready for the summit push, Horrell seems to forget how to be funny and details his difficult and dangerous struggle up the North Col, First Step, Second Step, Summit Ridge etc.

The action doesn't end there. Unlike most books in this genre that merely skims over the descent, Horrells recounts the many dangerous moments he had while trying to get off the mountain alive, under the watchful eye of his personal Sherpa Changba who has climbed the mountain 12 times.

There are quite a number of dead bodies the author encountered on his climb. The one that bugs him most is an irrational climber he ran into on his descent. Horrell dedicates this him. Ridden with guilt, he wonders if that climber could have survived if he had advised him to turn around.

Overall, it is a highly readable book. However, I skipped chunks at the end as the author described how totally drained and humourless he was when he reached Base Camp.

The Pacific: Hell Was an Ocean Away, by Hugh Ambrose

The New York Times bestselling official companion book to the Emmy(r) Award-winning HBO(r) miniseries.

Between America's retreat from China in late November 1941 and the moment General MacArthur's airplane touched down on the Japanese mainland in August of 1945, five men connected by happenstance fought the key battles of the war against Japan. From the debacle in Bataan, to the miracle at Midway and the relentless vortex of Guadalcanal, their solemn oaths to their country later led one to the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot and the others to the coral strongholds of Peleliu, the black terraces of Iwo Jima and the killing fields of Okinawa, until at last the survivors enjoyed a triumphant, yet uneasy, return home.

In The Pacific, Hugh Ambrose focuses on the real-life stories of five men who put their lives on the line for our country. To deepen the story revealed in the HBO(r) miniseries and go beyond it, the book dares to chart a great ocean of enmity known as the Pacific and the brave men who fought.

The Pacific: An Opinionated History

The Pacific presents the Pacific War, from America’s first battle with the Japanese to the final shot. It blends eyewitness accounts into a larger perspective on the course of the war. However, this larger perspective is not solely provided by the historian, but also by the veterans. Put another way, instead of layering some oral histories onto a historical framework, I follow the lives of five veterans who, between them, experienced most of the key moments of the war. By walking with these men through their respective wars, the reader comes to see The Pacificas a whole.

The result of this approach is, I think, unusually powerful. The war comes at the reader with speed and power and meaning. The veterans, moreover, were not historians calmly researching and reporting all the facts. Their very definite opinions about people and events, as expressed in the book, must be understood in that light. Although historians may contest some of their judgments, I think they are valuable. It’s not just that veterans have a right to their own opinions—they certainly earned it—it’s that their passion is infectious. Reading this book, you will always care about what happens and why.

A careful reader will of course discern a great many of my conclusions about the war. I choose these particular men out of hundreds of possibilities for a reason. You will notice, for instance, that the US Army receives scant notice. I recognize that there were more army divisions serving in the Pacific than Marine Corps divisions. I admit that in fighting their way through the South Pacific, the soldiers won battles every bit as harrowing as those fought by the Leathernecks. As a historian, though, I believe that the drive through the South Pacific was secondary. Had the US only been able to sustain one drive, it would have been the one through the Central Pacific. In order to keep my book to manageable length, I focused on the US Navy and its Marine Corps.

Although the book focuses on Marines, specifically the story of the First Marine Division, it also includes the life of one aircraft carrier pilot. The Pacific War was a carrier war as no war has ever been. Few men saw as much of the carrier war as Vernon “Mike” Micheel. To see Mike fly a dive bomber at the Battle of Midway and later at the Philippine Sea is to simultaneously appreciate these critical turning points; to understand them within the context of the war; and to witness the profound change in circumstances which occurred between them.

Mike Micheel served with two of the carrier war’s most important figures: Captain Miles Browning and Admiral J.J. “Jocko” Clark. Through Mike, we do not come to understand them in their totality, as their biographies provide. We see them in action and as viewed by someone who served under them. Mike did not care for Browning, who is revered by some historians, because Browning “short decked” his squadrons—as captain of the carrier USS Yorktown, he failed to ensure his pilots had enough open deck and enough headwind with which to take off. Conversely, Admiral Clark, who once accused Mike of skipping work to go drinking in the bars, comes off better than Browning. Clark’s personality could be as abrasive as Browning’s, but his motivations were sound. Mike understood that Clark wanted his ship to be the best. Every sailor on board Yorktown believed that their Admiral worked hard to achieve that goal.

Watching Mike’s experiences with these men, we understand why he judged them so. Part of his information about them came from hearsay or, as its known in the navy, scuttlebutt. Scuttlebutt is notoriously inaccurate. Mike knew that and tried not to be influenced by it, but he still was. The importance of gossip in the life of a man in combat is often stated by historians, but The Pacific endeavors to allow the reader to experience a man’s struggle to understand, to survive.

Each of the millions of men under arms in WWII experienced his own unique war. Each man within a company or a squadron comprehended his reality differently than his comrades. Can five men, with their own set of idiosyncratic experiences, represent this vast and complex war sufficiently to warrant the book’s all-encompassing title? I think so. By choosing these particular five men, I have written a history that simultaneously describes the individual experience and illuminates the general truths of that vast ocean of enmity we call The Pacific.

--Hugh Ambrose

From Publishers Weekly
In this follow-up to his late father's Band of Brothers, which tracked a single army unit from Georgia to the battlefields of Europe, historian Ambrose turns his attention to the Pacific theater, following four individual marines and one Naval Aviator through their time in combat. The book opens with the Japanese invasion of the Philippines and the capture of U.S. Forces on the Bataan peninsula and Corregidor Island. First-hand accounts from U.S. combatants describe vividly the horrific conditions of the island-hopping campaign and the ferocity of the fighting, but also the lengths to which young men would go to join up: subject Eugene B. Sledge purposely flunked out of college to enlist in the Marine Corps. Captain Austin Shofner recounts the brutality of his internment in a Japanese prison war camp, his daring escape, fighting alongside Philippine guerillas, and his eventual repatriation with the U.S. Marine Corps. Ambrose also reveals how, at the time, many marines expressed contempt for Gen. MacArthur, receiving accolades back home while they made halting, bloody progress across such islands as Guadalcanal, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Doing for the war against Japan what Band of Brothers did for the war against Germany, Ambrose's history effectively immerses readers in the Good War's second front.

From Booklist
A project conceived by the late historian Stephen Ambrose and carried through by his son, this work tracks several marines and a navy pilot through WWII in the Pacific Ocean. If extant combat memoirs render several names in this group recognizable to serious WWII readers (and form the foundation of Ambrose’s chronicle), a new HBO combat drama—advertised on Super Bowl XLIV no less—that debuts in tandem with the book will accord even wider renown to the warriors. Inhabiting the same volume, the main characters, nevertheless, enact separate narratives that cross intermittently in battles such as the harrowing amphibious landings on Peleliu and Iwo Jima and the ghastly campaigns on Guadalcanal and Okinawa. The account of the pilot is even more autonomous, because it is framed by aircraft-carrier warfare at Midway and elsewhere. Although structurally this work collects more than unifies the biographies, its author’s original research, which textures the five individuals, should rekindle interest in Ambrose’s sources—classics in war literature such as Robert Leckie’s Helmet for My Pillow (1957) or Eugene Sledge’s With the Old Breed (1981). --Gilbert Taylor

A Generation Removed
By The Ginger Man
The 10 segment HBO mini-series will focus on the Pacific theater as seen through the eyes of Robert Leckie, John Basilone and Eugene Sledge. Based on the books "With the Old Breed" by Sledge and "Helmet for my Pillow" by Leckie as well as other first person accounts and interviews, the series includes battles in Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima and Okinawa as well as the marines return after VJ Day. The Pacific is the companion book to the series but differs in some ways. It also features the stories of Ensign "Mike" Micheel who got his first experience as a dive bomber at the Battle of Midway and that of Lieutenant Austin Shofner who was a POW in Manila after being part of the initial unsuccessful attempt to hold the Philippines.

As in HBO's prior WW II series, The Pacific manages to personalize events which have been portrayed on more of an epic level in presentations such as Victory at Sea. In doing so, it succeeds in conveying the larger than life terror that citizen soldiers faced just a few months removed from their everyday lives in their hometowns. Micheel describes the "puckering" he feels while preparing to dive bomb an enemy aircraft carrier. A marine experiencing repeated bombing runs by Japanese airplanes writes in his journal: "We are all nervous wrecks." As Shofner struggles to survive the extremes of deprivation in an enemy POW camp, his friend tells him "Death isn't hard. Death is easy." It is at that point that Shofner knows his friend will not survive the camp.

What is extraordinary is how the men surmount these challenges and fight in the face of fear, doubt, lack of food and water, sleep deprivation and the illness that can result from all of these factors. Seeing the War in the Pacific through the eyes of the men who fought it, the reader comes to understand that while military strategy initiates each battle, individual acts of teamwork, sacrifice and courage drive the results that follow. It is impossible not to constantly ask yourself if you would have measured up under similar circumstance. It becomes increasingly difficult to answer confidently in the affirmative.

The Pacific also illustrates how little information each person at the battlefront has about the larger context in which he is operating. Due to the necessity to keep military strategy secret as well as the challenges in conveying information on the front, marines exist on a diet of rumor and speculation as to what will next occur. The book also does a good job of showing the incredible logistical challenges involved in providing food, water and other supplies every day to large numbers of field personnel scattered across a wide area under hostile conditions. Technical resources, battle strategy, national will and individual courage determine military success in The Pacific but the ability to keep men hydrated determines whether they will be able to fight at all.

My favorite parts of the book are the descriptions of American dive bombers. Just reading about a pilot idling his engine to begin an 8,000 foot virtual free fall dive to drop a thousand pound bomb on an enemy ship causes some "puckering." If the pilot survives the dive, he hopes to have enough gasoline to find his own fleet on return and then ends by dropping his Dauntless onto the moving top of an aircraft carrier. When needed, Ensign Micheel volunteers for a second mission later the same day.

My father was a gunner on a destroyer escort in the Pacific. At his knees as a small child, I sat through countless viewings of Victory at Sea. As I got older, I could never fully understand how much a part of him his service was. I now know more about the war in which he served but I'm not sure I am that much closer to understanding what he felt. Reading books like The Pacific gives me some idea for how an 18 year old kid from East Boston could spend 3 years on a ship at war, return home with one photo over his workbench, a knife and a set of tattoos and never once talk about his experiences with his son. I wish I could have known him better and, at the same time, hope that I could have served as resolutely if needed.

A passable yet dry account of The Pacific War...
By Brian Hawkinson
As a huge fan of Band of Brothers I couldn't wait for the series to start so I picked up Ambrose's The Pacific in order to fill the time and give me a back story for when the series starts. The Pacific certainly did that and more as I now want to read a lot more on the war against the "Japs". With The Pacific I think the subject being covered was what triggered this, as Ambrose's style of writing is both a hit and a miss.

The pros are that I oftentimes wonder as I am reading other memoirs/bios of WWII veterans as to where and how they fit in with one another. With The Pacific the mini bios of the marines and naval pilots are all woven together in a linear timeline so you always know where they are and what they are doing in relation to one another. This is fascinating to me because it adds many levels of detail that help to create an overall richer account of The Pacific War. Add to this the different elements of who they are, i.e. officer, dive bomber and so on, and we are treated to a more in depth look at the structure of the US forces battlling the Japanese in the Pacific ocean.

The cons, and I really only have one worth mentioning, is that Ambrose's style of writing can be rather dry and stiff at times, feeling as though we are getting a recitation of facts instead of a narrative that is weaving the facts together. Although this style can work I oftentimes found that the writing style was having troubles catching my interest and I had to draw myself back in order to continue my own narrative of what Ambrose was telling us.

Overall the book is workable as a companion volume to the upcoming HBO series for not only illustrating the lives of some of the men being represented but in also layering more detail with the inclusion of other equally fascinating men, notably Shofner and Micheel, who were perhaps more fascinating to read about because of their experiences as a POW in a Japanese POW camp and as a dive bomber, respectively. I would certainly recommend to read the other more immensely readable WWII memoirs of the Pacific Theater, i.e. Helmet For My Pillow and With The Old Breed, in order to get a better feel for what will be depicted in the HBO series, and pick up The Pacific as a companion volume instead of a stand alone history of the Pacific War.

3.5 stars.

I hope the series is better than the book
By D. May
I just bought this book the other day. I've read a LOT of history on WW2, perhaps 200+ books.

As the author explains in the Introduction, this book is meant not as a detailed military analysis of the battles that are covered within it, nor is it meant to be a biography, per se. The author claims to be striving for an "in the moment" veteran's-eye view, with all misconceptions, errors of fact, and rampant war rumors (which accompany any combat operation) left intact, for affect. Direct quotes from the players...and related players...are intentionally lacking.

So, if you can imagine a book that has minimal dialogue or quotes, erroneous historical facts cited often, and strives on purpose to have all the depth and breadth of a casual conversation, you end up with what seems to me like a book that HAD a lot of potential, but any time it got near any topic of interest, it did its best to get off the subject and move on to the next topic, as fast as possible. I want to know exactly what these guys were thinking, feeling and saying in these moments, in as much detail as the author could have wrested from his subjects via extensive interviews and research. This book reads more like a field report, all too often just too brief and bound by short sentences, consisting of the barest-of-bones facts.

In the end, it's VERY hard to read. Stilted, encumbered by its self-inflicted "style", it is a lost chance to really contribute to our history in the war...and it was done on purpose, all for the sake of conducting what I would call, "A failed experiment in writing". Hugh Ambrose just isn't his father, sorry to say.

I hope the mini-series is better. I'd skip this book, I don't think that you'll find it a page-turner. :-/

Excellent for teachers and children!
By Amazon Customer
This children's church curriculum is great for our small church. With only two teachers we can handle the entire children's church because it incorporates using older kids as Park Patrol. We LOVE it...interesting stories, fun games, puppet skits, crafts and snacks to go along with each lesson. Whether you have 30 minutes or two hours, this kit can fill the time constructively. We are using it with kids from 2 to 14.

Great curriculum for Children's Church Program

We have used both the blue and green editions at our church, and we loved them. The lessons & crafts go well together. Would recommend this to anyone needing a curriculum for their Children's Church.

interesting and organized
By believer
We used the Blue Edition last year. We had 5 workers who divided the year. This was so easy to separate and give each teacher their material for the year. Lots to do, children loved the puppets which two of the teachers used. Good materials for advanced preparation.

Clinical Neuroscience: Psychopathology and the Brain, by Kelly G. Lambert, Craig H. Kinsley

Clinical Neuroscience informs students of relevant neurobiological foundations of various mental illnesses. In this book, students will begin their journey with a tour of the brain's fundamental building blocks (neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, neurophysiology, neurodevelopment) before moving to mental health challenges and illnesses (Traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's Disease, Addiction, Schizophrenia, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Depression). The final section of the book includes chapters addressing topics thought to be important for building resilience against the emergence of mental illness; these chapters cover the topics of adaptive coping strategies, hunger regulation, and the nexus between mental and immune functions. Throughout the text, the value of empirical evidence is emphasized so that meaningful progress can be made toward the identification of the most effective treatment strategies. By understanding multiple neurobiological perspectives such as neuroanatomical, behavioral, evolutionary, and neurochemical approaches currently existing in the field, students will be better prepared to conceptualize the relevant components of these mental health puzzles. Features such as opening chapter vignettes (Connections), case studies (A Case in Point) and feature boxes (Brain Matters) illuminate the course content for students as they learn about the value of translational research.

Very helpful but visually unappealing
By Ashly
I have had the pleasure of having Dr. Lambert teach my clinical neuroscience class. The textbook is very helpful and the personal stories really kept me interested in reading and able to tie the material to a real person. Visually though, the textbook is very boring and unappealing. There is a set of colored pictures in the middle of the book but otherwise, you're looking at black and white. Dr. Lambert doesn't like all the colorful and distracting boxes that other textbooks have but I personally find them much more appealing to read. Good textbook overall! Would recommend!
