Inspiration for Applying Scrum

The first thing to know is that this isn't a detailed guide to Scrum practices, though there is a summary of the key practices in an appendix. Since there are lots of guides to Scrum at the practices at varying levels of details, having more about what the practices are would not add a lot of value. This book does inform you about how scrum works by helping you to understand the value of Scrum through stories of Scrum in use in various domains, and not just software.. The book is full of war stories (both literally and figuratively), and Sutherland is clearly proud of how he, his family, and organizations he has worked with, have applied scrum. Reading this book will help energize you to use Scrum to help your team succeed. This is not the only book on Scum you need. But if you want motivation to explore more about Scrum, or if you have been practicing Scrum for a while and are looking for renewed inspiration, give this book a read.

Why Scrum?

Many Scrum books discuss the "how". This book focuses on the "why". I think it's very important to understand the "why" before trying to worry about the "how", so if you're new to Scrum and are thinking about diving straight into a book discussing the processes, I recommend taking a step back and reading something like this to understand where Scrum came from, what problems it is designed to solve, and how it is applicable to your situation, if at all.

It gets a little over-ambitious towards the end, and tends to view Scrum as a silver bullet, which it is not, but the discussion in the first half of the book is great.

Great book to get you excited about Scrum

This is a great overview of Scrum and its power and simplicity when applied in the real world; not just in software teams but in charity work, government and education contexts. I've been a Scrum Master, developer, trainer, and coach for 10 years and I found it compelling. After reading some of the other Amazon reviews, I'd like to set some expectations for anyone thinking of reading it. What it isn't:

* A detailed Scrum manual for software teams. There's a short overview in the appendix, but this material is covered in plenty of other places, such as the Scrum Guide at (...), or the excellent Essential Scrum by Ken Rubin and the series of related Addison-Wesley books.
* A guide to troubleshooting Scrum or resolving common pitfalls in Scrum software teams. There's nothing here about handling unruly Product Owners, or whether SAFe is an appropriate extension for your company.

What it is:

* A fantastic, story-driven overview of how Scrum came to be, real-world situations where it has turned projects around, and why you should consider adopting it. If you are a C-level executive or other leader who wants to be "sold" on all this Scrum/agile/lean stuff you've heard about, read this. Note the endorsement by Eric Ries, author of The Lean Startup. The two books are good companions and written for a similar audience.
* For current Scrum practitioners, a fun read and refresher on why we're doing this thing called Scrum. It's easy to get lost in the day-to-day of backlog refinement, shipping increments and handling team impediments and forget about the spirit of the whole thing. Scrum is about getting out of the way of teams and letting them deliver above and beyond what's possible in command-and-control organizations.

Bottom line: This is a great companion book to others that explain Scrum in more detail, but it's more about the ideas behind it and the exciting possibilities it offers for people working on projects anywhere.

Same old

Did I even read the same book as all these people? I wouldn't say it was terrible as I have read worse books but I certainly wouldn't say it was worth the five stars that many have given. The story line is so old. The girl has been in love with her best friend forever, he goes away for a while, she gets lonely and hooks up with someone else and naked pictures or some sordid video is released blah blah blah.
I honestly don't get how some characters are written. I did not like the girl, I can't even remember her name, she is that unforgettable. I like that she managed to get stronger after the bullying, but I still didn't like her. The only redeeming quality of this book was Daltrey. I did like him

While written nicely this story dragged on endlessly. It should be marketed as Yound Adult. The hero and heroine are 19 and the writer has done an excellent job keeping their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors at that cusp of adulthood. I found it unsatisfying that the adults in the story are protagonists who have "done wrong" to the lead couple, who again are immature and rely on others to make life decisions for them. I would not be interested in reading a follow-up to this story.

Low-angst, sweet and emotional

Daltrey and Daisy have been best friends since they were five, and have both harbored feelings for each other for years. After not speaking for a year (in which Daltrey gets a recording contract and major fame), they see each other again, and this is when the majority of the story takes place.

This is a romance, but it's also a story about bullying. Daisy went through a lot of ugly stuff while Daltrey was becoming famous. She didn't tell Daltrey about what was happening, not wanting to ruin his chances at success. It was easy to sympathize with Daisy, and she really got a lot stronger throughout the story.

This was a pretty low-angst read. Both Daltrey and Daisy were able to talk things out for the most part like adults. It was other people believing they had the best interests of Daltrey/Daisy that caused the problems. Daltrey managed to be a rock star without being a manwhore, which I liked. Daltrey's dad was a piece of work, him I wanted to punch.

This solar wind interacts with the magnetic fields around Mercury, Venus, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. These planets accept and then disburse the solar wind radiation. As the radiation is disbursed, a goodly amount of it finds its way towards the magnetic field around planet Earth. Changes in the density and speed of solar wind mean that the amount of radiation reaching Earth’s magnetic field on a daily, weekly or monthly basis will be ever-changing. As a result, the intensity or flux of the Earth’s magnetic field is also constantly changing. The alignment of the orbiting planets in our cosmos plays a significant role in determining how much solar radiation is deflected towards Earth’s magnetic field. We all have an electrical field that runs through our tissues. Hence, basic physics demands that changes to the Earth’s magnetic field will then induce subtle changes to our bodily electrical circuitry. About the Author
Malcolm Bucholtz, B.Sc, MBA is a graduate of Queen’s University Faculty of Engineering in Canada and Heriot Watt University in Scotland where he received an MBA degree. After working in Canadian industry for far too many years, Malcolm followed his passion for the financial markets by becoming an Investment Advisor/Commodity Trading Advisor with an independent brokerage firm in western Canada. Today, he resides in western Canada where he trades the financial markets using astrological phenomena and esoteric mathematics. Malcolm is the author of five books. His first book, The Bull, the Bear and the Planets, offers the reader an introduction to Financial Astrology and makes the case that there are esoteric and astrological phenomena that influence the financial markets. His second book, The Lost Science, takes the reader on a deeper journey into planetary events and unique mathematical phenomena that influence financial markets. His third book, De-Mystifying the McWhirter Theory of Stock Market Forecasting assists the reader in applying the astrological principles outlined by Louise McWhirter in her 1937 epic book. Chapter 1 of Information Rules begins with a description of the change brought on by technology at the close of the century--but the century described is not this one, it's the late 1800s. One hundred years ago, it was an emerging telephone and electrical network that was transforming business. Today it's the Internet. The point? While the circumstances of a particular era may be unique, the underlying principles that describe the exchange of goods in a free-market economy are the same. And the authors, Carl Shapiro and Hal Varian, should know. Shapiro is Professor of Business Strategy at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley and has also served as chief economist at the Antitrust Division of the Justice Department. Varian is the Dean of the School of Information Management and Systems at UC Berkeley. Together they offer a deep knowledge of how economic systems work coupled with first-hand experience of today's network economy. They write: Sure, today's business world is different in a myriad of ways from that of a century ago. The nuts-and-bolts approach to finding ways to differentiate one's product from all the others, and a how-to guide to simplify and improve customer interface, are both helpful, and the idea of managing intellectual properties to maximize value is infinitely superior to just protecting them from competitors. Some of the information delves into building positive feedback for the product, and every businessperson probably needs to know some of the legal ins and outs of building alliances and the ramifications of competition. Superb insights on how to market intellectual property

This is a superb book. It's aimed at people who must decide how to market software and technology-related products & services, but it applies equally well to the full range of intellectual property, including consulting services. The writing is crystal clear and the book is highly structured. My only quibble is that the authors have bulked it up a bit by being more repetitious than they need to be. Even so, it's not a weighty tome, and it's as enjoyable as it is enlightening.

Although this book was written in 1998, it is just as relevant if not more so today. The book discusses how Internet entrepreneurs should price their goods/services; how they can create lock-in effects to instill customer loyalty; and perhaps most importantly, how they can create network effects so as to exponentially increase their client base and barriers to entry. A brilliant book written by two leading authorities on economics.

It says there's nothing magic in the book, and proceeds to show you why. A new view of an old topic - a perfect approach. It may contain standard topics from the economist's point of view, but puts them in a new light.

About the Author
Fred Patten was an anime fan before most of this generation of fans were born, back when color television was a novelty and the idea of playing back TV shows on tapes and discs was a science fiction fantasy. Actually, Patten was a big part of the science fiction and fantasy world before he was drawn into anime fandom in the mid-1970's. He remains active in the animation industry with Streamline Pictures. Patten is best known for his writings on anime history. This is his first collection.

It's a shame more anime and manga fans don't buy this book!

To be honest with my title, had I seen this in a bookstore, I probably would have passed. Essays and collected reviews from one person too often give you a slanted point of view, and often not much real information. I like history, and that was the big selling point on this book for me. Too often we buy what's popular, what we know (are exposed to), or from listening to the suggestions of our friends. I'm not speaking of this book purchase now, but of the act of collection, reading, and watching of anime. It's really nice to know the history behind it.

By rights, maybe this book should be four stars instead of five, but I couldn't resist because it filled in a point of interest for me I've wondered about for years. I wrote an Amazon review a few years ago on the anime classic, Spirited Away. In the review I compared the movie to a life changing animated film I had seen as a boy. I've never been able to recall the name, and because of the era, I thought it American or perhaps a Chinese production. I've always looked for it to show up on TV, or in video, hoping I'd recognize the title or the plot. I knew little more than the type of film, plot, and name of the main character.

My dad took me to the film, and I thought it must have been because he was interested in its philosophy. My dad had visited China, and India during WWII as a Cryptographer. After the war, he brought home some items from China, and a good deal of Eastern Philosophy. What I didn't realize is that the movie he took me too, was in reality one of the earliest anime shown in the United States. It was a dubbed film called Magic Boy, that was shown in a limited release in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in June of 1961. Strangely enough, it was another limited release anime, Princess Mononoke, that sparked me to begin collecting anime and manga in 1999. Little did I know that my childhood had been influenced greatly by the earliest film of the anime genre to hit the US. Perhaps I was destined to become an anime lover!

My point here is that this book helped me find out that fact. When I read in the book about the early anime films, I suddenly realized they were from the era when I saw that film. There were three titles, released in the US about then. I looked up the pictures, plots from the web, and got a dead-on match with the film, Magic Boy! As I've read further in this book I find more things I knew little about, milestones that brought about the popularity of anime and manga. As a kind of a time-line, (based on the dates of the articles collected in the book) you can see the growth of anime and manga in the US. You can see as well why there is still a great deal of resistance to it's becoming mainstream, even today.

Just to speak to that issue, inject a little of my own philosophy to a theme expressed in many of the books articles. The answer I speak of is that viewing anime, and reading manga, is justified by the main reason many avoid it. It's new, and its different! While many anime and manga are generic SciFi or Fantasy, often they contain elements of the Japanese culture. If you've watched one too many episodes of some reality show, the same rehashed episode of a sitcom for the 50th time ,you know you too long for something new. Despite cultural differences, most anime stories are easy enough to relate to, we're all humans and many of our goals are the same regardless of culture.

One more thing on the book, this is a good read to put somewhere (you know where I mean) to read in small bursts, periodically. Since it's a collection of anime reviews and small articles, you can read one or two at a time, and pick it back up later. It's not a book you have to read in long sittings.

A 'must' for anime followers

Fred Patten's Watching Anime, Reading Managa: 25 Years Of Essays And Reviews reports on the anime culture in America, gathering articles on Japanese animation and comics and examining both its fan world and the business of its production. Chapters cover everything from individual anime artists to overall licensing and theatrical issues and features, anime pornography, Japanese anime and manga culture, and more. The range of issues and considerations come from an active participant in fan clubs and writings over the years and will prove a 'must' for anime followers.

Dated but still worthwhile

Interesting. It's difficult to not give this collection of essays at least four stars, simply because there's so much
material presented. It is, however, like many other books of this type, dated. Also, Patten is dealing with
anime and manga in general, so specific titles/series are not dealt with except where needed to illustrate
the point being made. I guess you could label this as a history text, of sorts, dealing with the medium
during a certain time period, by way of the observations of one individual who was in a position to do so.
If you are interested in that sort of perspective, it's worthwhile.

Excellent book for students as well as people in industry.

This books lays out the fundamentals of cost and optimization engineering that are crucial for most engineers, especially those in the Chemical Engineering industries.
